Solid-State Ultracapacitor Polymer Composite

An ultracapacitor made from a polymer loaded with ceramic powder would have several advantages over current ultracapacitors and batteries. First is the possibility of it being printable, which would allow for printing the energy storage device along with the circuit instead of having to find a way to add one later without damaging the rest of the components. When not printed in a specific design for use on a printed wiring board, this type of ultracapacitor could still be cured via a mold to a shape suitable to specific applications. Many polymers maintain some flexibility even after curing, such as the silicone used in this study. The manufacturing process would also be far simpler than that of conventional ultracapacitors. In this work, solid-state ultracapacitors were made by adding the dielectric powder to a two-part polymer (resin and hardener) at the same time. The mixture was then cured in the desired shape at a low temperature until completely set. The addition of the powder to the polymer increased its dielectric properties while leaving most of its physical properties unaltered. At higher powder loading percentages, there were some physical changes as the maximum loading point was approached. To determine the efficiency of these solid-state ultracapacitors, their capacitances were tested, and their dielectric constants (DCs) were measured and compared.

Partial reflection data collection and processing using a small computer

Online data collection of the amplitudes of circularly polarized radio waves, partially reflected from the D region of the earth's ionosphere, has enabled the calculation of an electron-density profile in the height region 60-90 km. A PDP 15/30 digital computer with an analog to digital converter and magnetic tape as an intermediary storage device are used. The computer configuration, the software developed, and the preliminary results are described.

Development of procedures for calculating stiffness and damping properties of elastomers in engineering applications. Part 1: Verification of basic methods

The primary aim of this investigation was verification of basic methods which are to be used in cataloging elastomer dynamic properties (stiffness and damping) in terms of viscoelastic model constants. These constants may then be used to predict dynamic properties for general elastomer shapes and operating conditions, thereby permitting optimum application of elastomers as energy absorption and/or energy storage devices in the control of vibrations in a broad variety of applications. The efforts reported involved: (1) literature search; (2) the design, fabrication and use of a test rig for obtaining elastomer dynamic test data over a wide range of frequencies, amplitudes, and preloads; and (3) the reduction of the test data, by means of a selected three-element elastomer model and specialized curve fitting techniques, to material properties. Material constants thus obtained have been used to calculate stiffness and damping for comparison with measured test data. These comparisons are excellent for a number of test conditions and only fair to poor for others. The results confirm the validity of the basic approach of the overall program and the mechanics of the cataloging procedure, and at the same time suggest areas in which refinements should be made.

Alternatives in the complement and structure of NASA teleprocessing resources

The results are presented of a program to identify technical innovations which would have an impact on NASA data processing and describe as fully as possible the development work necessary to exploit them. Seven of these options for NASA development, as the opportunities to participate in and enhance the advancing information system technology were called, are reported. A detailed treatment is given of three of the options, involving minicomputers, mass storage devices and software development techniques. These areas were picked by NASA as having the most potential for improving their operations.

Computer programs for the solution of systems of linear algebraic equations

FORTRAN subprograms for the solution of systems of linear algebraic equations are described, listed, and evaluated in this report. Procedures considered are direct solution, iteration, and matrix inversion. Both incore methods and those which utilize auxiliary data storage devices are considered. Some of the subroutines evaluated require the entire coefficient matrix to be in core, whereas others account for banding or sparceness of the system. General recommendations relative to equation solving are made, and on the basis of tests, specific subprograms are recommended.

Digital hardware and computer system for a digital image recorder.

Description of the digital memory and related computer system used at the Palomar Mountain Observatory. The memory was designed to have a large number of pixels, a high capacity for each pixel, and fast access for use with a variety of image sensors. As an image integration and storage device, this memory is shown to possess ideal properties, namely, it is strictly linear, has a wide dynamic range, and the image does not deteriorate with time. The observer has a visual display which enables him to monitor the image as it is being integrated.-
