Metal Site Substitution and Role of the Dimer on Symmetry Breaking in FePS 3 and CrPS 4 under Pressure

We combine infrared absorption, Raman scattering, and diamond anvil cell techniques to explore the properties of FePS 3 and CrPS 4 under pressure, comparing our findings with a symmetry analysis, lattice dynamics calculations, and an examination of the energy landscape. Although these complex chalcogenides are considered to be members of the same family of materials, they display remarkably different phase progressions on account of the metal center orbital filling, character of the P–P linkage, layer corrugation, and differing size of the van der Waals gap. Here, we discuss the space group progressions, structure–property relations, and development of pressure-induced metallicity in terms of the competition between local and long-range symmetry transformations and structural distortion pathways. These findings place the properties of FePS 3 and CrPS 4 on a firm foundation for work under strain control and in the single layer limit.

Ambient and High Pressure CuNiSb 2 : Metal-Ordered and Metal-Disordered NiAs-Type Derivative Pnictides

The mineral Zlatogorite, CuNiSb 2 , was synthesized in the laboratory for the first time by annealing elements at ambient pressure (CuNiSb 2 -AP). Rietveld refinement of synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data indicates that CuNiSb 2 -AP crystallizes in the NiAs-derived structure ( P 3 m 1, #164) with Cu and Ni ordering. The structure consists of alternate NiSb 6 and CuSb 6 octahedral layers via face-sharing. The formation of such structure instead of metal disordered NiAs-type structure ( P 6 3 / mm c, #194) is validated by the lower energy of the ordered phase by first-principle calculations. Interatomic crystal orbital Hamilton population, electron localization function, and charge density analysis reveal strong Ni-Sb, Cu-Sb, and Cu-Ni bonding and long weak Sb-Sb interactions in CuNiSb 2 -AP. The magnetic measurement indicates that CuNiSb 2 -AP is Pauli paramagnetic. First-principle calculations and experimental electrical resistivity measurements reveal that CuNiSb 2 -AP is a metal. The low Seebeck coefficient and large thermal conductivity suggest that CuNiSb 2 is not a potential thermoelectric material. Single crystals were grown by chemical vapor transport. The high pressure sample (CuNiSb 2 -8 GPa) was prepared by pressing CuNiSb 2 -AP at 700 °C and 8 GPa. However, the structures of single crystal and CuNiSb 2 -8 GPa are best fit with a disordered metal structure in the P 3 m 1 space group, corroborated by transmission electron microscopy.

The crystal structure of a new calcium aluminate phase containing formate

A new calcium aluminate phase containing formate ions was synthesized and its crystal structure determined. This new phase is indicated as M-phase and was firstly observed in Portland cement pastes hydrated in presence of Ca-formate and in excess of water. The crystal structure of the M-phase was successfully solved in the R-3 space group of the trigonal system on the basis of synchrotron X-ray single crystal diffraction data. The structural model was confirmed by Rietveld refinement of the powder diffraction data acquired on the synthesized pure sample. The crystal structure of the M-phase is similar to that of ettringite, being characterized by columns of AlO{sub 6} octahedra alternating with groups of three edge-sharing CaO{sub 7} polyhedra. The formate ions (HCOO){sup −} share two oxygens with Ca polyhedra and are located in the interspace between the columns. The crystal structure of the M-phase testifies the strong interaction occurring between small organic molecules as formate and the calcium aluminate components of Portland cement.

Iridate Li8IrO 6 : An Antiferromagnetic Insulator

In this work, a polycrystalline iridate Li 8 IrO 6 material was prepared via heating Li 2 O and IrO 2 starting materials in a sealed quartz tube at 650 °C for 48 h. The structure was determined from Rietveld refinement of room-temperature powder neutron diffraction data. Li 8 IrO 6 adopts the nonpolar space group $R\bar{3}$ with Li atoms occupying the tetrahedral and octahedral sites, which is supported by the electron diffraction and solid-state 7Li NMR. This results in a crystal structure consisting of LiO 4 tetrahedral layers alternating with mixed IrO 6 and LiO 6 octahedral layers along the crystallographic c -axis. The +4 oxidation state of Ir 4+ was confirmed by near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. An in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction study of Li 8 IrO 6 indicates that the sample is stable up to 1000 °C and exhibits no structural transitions. Magnetic measurements suggest long-range antiferromagnetic ordering with a Néel temperature (TN) of 4 K, which is corroborated by heat capacity measurements. The localized effective moment $μ_{\text{eff}}$ (Ir) = 1.73 $μ_{\text{B}}$ and insulating character indicate that Li 8 IrO 6 is a correlated insulator. First-principles calculations support the nonpolar crystal structure and reveal the insulating behavior both in paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic states.
