Remote detection of trailing vortices, task 3, modification 3

The operation of a frequency tracker for use with the laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) is reported. Topics discussed include: laser beam profile, lens matching, and LDV resolution data. It is concluded that the LDV provides good ground wind signals. The loss in sensitivity of the cavity system at high frequencies is partly compensated by an increase in the scattering cross section of the atmosphere due to dust.

Atmospheric contaminant sensor. Book 3 of 3: Addendum

The modification of the Atmospheric Contaminant Sensor (ACS) to produce a carbon dioxide measuring capability is discussed. The modified instrument is described and the instructions for its operation and maintenance are included. Schematic diagrams and circuit drawings are included to clarify the text.

Manned space flight nuclear system safety. Volume 3: Reactor system preliminary nuclear safety analysis. Part 3: Nuclear Safety Analysis Document (NSAD)

Nuclear safety analysis as applied to a space base mission is presented. The nuclear safety analysis document summarizes the mission and the credible accidents/events which may lead to nuclear hazards to the general public. The radiological effects and associated consequences of the hazards are discussed in detail. The probability of occurrence is combined with the potential number of individuals exposed to or above guideline values to provide a measure of accident and total mission risk. The overall mission risk has been determined to be low with the potential exposure to or above 25 rem limited to less than 4 individuals per every 1000 missions performed. No radiological risk to the general public occurs during the prelaunch phase at KSC. The most significant risks occur from prolonged exposure to reactor debris following land impact generally associated with the disposal phase of the mission where fission product inventories can be high.

Saturn - A study of the 3 nu sub 3 methane band.

Photometric spectra are given for various manifolds of the R-branch of this methane band of Saturn. The spectra were obtained by measurements, primarily in the winter of 1970, along the planet's central meridian. Analysis of the manifold shapes in terms of a reflecting-layer model proved largely self-consistent. It implies a rotational temperature of about 140 K and a C/H ratio in Saturn's atmosphere which is close to that on the sun.

Systems design study of the Pioneer Venus spacecraft. Appendices to volume 1, sections 3-6 (part 1 of 3)

The design is described of the Venus probe windows, which are required to measure solar flux, infrared flux, aureole, and cloud particles. Window heating and structural materials for the probe window assemblies are discussed along with the magnetometer. The command lists for science, power and communication requirements, telemetry sign characteristics, mission profile summary, mass properties of payloads, and failure modes are presented.
