Terminal navigation analysis for the 1980 comet Encke slow flyby mission

The initial results of a terminal navigation analysis for the proposed 1980 solar electric slow flyby mission to the comet Encke are presented. The navigation technique employs onboard optical measurements with the scientific television camera, groundbased observations of the spacecraft and comet, and groundbased orbit determination and thrust vector update computation. The knowledge and delivery accuracies of the spacecraft are evaluated as a function of the important parameters affecting the terminal navigation. These include optical measurement accuracy, thruster noise level, duration of the planned terminal coast period, comet ephemeris uncertainty, guidance initiation time, guidance update frequency, and optical data rate.

Distribution pattern of temperature and biomass in the upwelling area along the NW coast of Africa

Atmospheric conditions and wind systems are considered together with temperature observations. Data from scanning radiometers in the infrared and television cameras for the visible were applied to derive temperature data over cloudfree regions. From the analyzed spacecraft data it is obvious that the distribution of temperature and nonconservative parameters is much more complicated than one might expect from conventional measurements onboard a ship.

Venus - Atmospheric motion and structure from Mariner 10 pictures

The Mariner 10 television cameras imaged the planet Venus in the visible and near ultraviolet for a period of 8 days at resolutions ranging from 100 meters to 130 kilometers. The general pattern of the atmospheric circulation in the upper tropospheric/lower stratospheric region is displayed in the pictures. Atmospheric flow is symmetrical between north and south hemispheres. The equatorial motions are zonal (east-west) at approximately 100 meters per second, consistent with the previously inferred 4-day retrograde rotation. Angular velocity increases with latitude. The subsolar region, and the region downwind from it, show evidence of large-scale convection that persists in spite of the main zonal motion. Dynamical interaction between the zonal motion and the relatively stationary region of convection is evidenced by bowlike waves.

Demonstration of optical navigation measurements on Mariner 10

An experiment was performed on the Mariner 10 Venus/Mercury mission to assess the performance of the onboard television cameras and ground-based software used in the optical navigation measurement system. The elements of the system, calibration, and distortion are considered. The navigation technique requires detection of stars in the same field of view as the target body. The star detection capability is discussed with reference to required threshold, calibration factors, standard conditions, camera sensitivity, response uniformity, and the effect of image smearing. Tests conducted during the Mariner 10 encounters with Mercury demonstrated that a large bright planet can be imaged simultaneously with faint stars to provide accurate navigation data. Improvements are suggested in the system for the Mariner Jupiter/Saturn 1977 and later missions.

Solid state electro-optic color filter and iris

The electro-optic properties of lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate (PLZT) ferroelectric ceramic material are evaluated when utilized as a variable density and/or spectral filter in conjunction with a television scanning system. Emphasis was placed on the development of techniques and procedures for processing the PLZT disks and for applying efficient electrode structures. A number of samples were processed using different combinations of cleaning, electrode material, and deposition process. Best overall performance resulted from the direct evaporation of gold over chrome electrodes. A ruggedized mounting holder assembly was designed, fabricated, and tested. The assembly provides electrical contacts, high voltage protection, and support for the fragile PLZT disk, and permits mounting and optical alignment of the associated polarizers. Operational measurements of a PLZT sample mounted in the holder assembly were performed in conjunction with a television camera and the associated drive circuits. The data verified achievement of the elimination of the observed white-line effect.

Investigation of television transmission using adaptive delta modulation principles

The results are presented of a study on the use of the delta modulator as a digital encoder of television signals. The computer simulation of different delta modulators was studied in order to find a satisfactory delta modulator. After finding a suitable delta modulator algorithm via computer simulation, the results were analyzed and then implemented in hardware to study its ability to encode real time motion pictures from an NTSC format television camera. The effects of channel errors on the delta modulated video signal were tested along with several error correction algorithms via computer simulation. A very high speed delta modulator was built (out of ECL logic), incorporating the most promising of the correction schemes, so that it could be tested on real time motion pictures. Delta modulators were investigated which could achieve significant bandwidth reduction without regard to complexity or speed. The first scheme investigated was a real time frame to frame encoding scheme which required the assembly of fourteen, 131,000 bit long shift registers as well as a high speed delta modulator. The other schemes involved the computer simulation of two dimensional delta modulator algorithms.

Real-time detection and data acquisition system for the left ventricular outline

To automate the data acquisition procedure, a real-time contour detection and data acquisition system for the left ventricular outline was developed using video techniques. The X-ray image of the contrast-filled left ventricle is stored for subsequent processing on film (cineangiogram), video tape or disc. The cineangiogram is converted into video format using a television camera. The video signal from either the TV camera, video tape or disc is the input signal to the system. The contour detection is based on a dynamic thresholding technique. Since the left ventricular outline is a smooth continuous function, for each contour side a narrow expectation window is defined in which the next borderpoint will be detected. A computer interface was designed and built for the online acquisition of the coordinates using a PDP-12 computer. The advantage of this system over other available systems is its potential for online, real-time acquisition of the left ventricular size and shape during angiocardiography.

The Viking Orbiter Visual Imaging Subsystem

Two Viking spacecraft each consisting of an Orbiter and a Lander are on trajectories toward Mars with arrival dates in June and August 1976. A Visual Imaging Subsystem consisting of two slow-scan television cameras forms part of the scientific payload of each Orbiter. These cameras will be used to evaluate the potential landing sites on Mars and to conduct other scientific investigations of the planet. The camera system described in this paper was subjected to an extensive test and calibration program prior to launch. Based on this calibration and subsequent analyses, absolute photometric accuracies of 8.0% may be achieved. Surface resolution exceeding 100 meters will be achieved from the periapsis portion of the Viking orbits. The inherent geometric accuracies of the Orbiter cameras supersede those of previous planetary missions. The analyses of images acquired during the cruise phase of the mission confirms that the cameras have survived the rigors of launch and are performing in a manner consistent with the prelaunch calibrations.
