Superconducting quasiparticle-amplifying transmon: A qubit-based sensor for meV-scale phonons and single terahertz photons

With great interest from the quantum computing community, an immense amount of R&D effort has been invested into improving superconducting qubits. The technologies developed for the design and fabrication of these qubits can be directly applied to applications for ultralow-threshold particle detectors, e.g., low-mass dark matter and far-infrared photon sensing. We propose a novel energy-resolving sensor based on the transmon qubit architecture combined with a signal-enhancing superconducting quasiparticle amplification stage. We refer to these sensors as SQUATs: superconducting quasiparticle-amplifying transmons. We detail the operating principle and design of this new sensor and predict that, with minimal R&D effort, solid-state-based detectors patterned with these sensors can achieve sensitivity to single terahertz photons, and sensitivity to 1 meV phonons in the detector absorber substrate on the microsecond timescale. Lightwave terahertz quantum manipulation of nonequilibrium superconductor phases and their collective modes

In this work, we present a gauge-invariant density matrix description of nonequilibrium superconductor (SC) states with spatial and temporal correlations driven by intense terahertz (THz) lightwaves. We derive superconductor Bloch-Maxwell equations of motion that extend Anderson pseudospin models to include the Cooper pair center-of-mass motion and electromagnetic propagation effects. We thus describe quantum control of dynamical phases, collective modes, quasiparticle coherence, and high nonlinearities during cycles of carrier wave oscillations, which relates to our recent experiments. Coherent photogeneration of a nonlinear supercurrent with a dc component, achieved via condensate acceleration by an effective lightwave field, dynamically breaks the equilibrium inversion symmetry. Experimental signatures include high harmonic light emission at equilibrium-symmetry-forbidden frequencies, Rabi-Higgs collective modes and quasiparticle coherence, and nonequilibrium moving condensate states tuned by few-cycle THz fields. We use such lightwaves as an oscillating accelerating force that drives strong nonlinearities and anisotropic quasiparticle populations to control and amplify different classes of collective modes, e.g., damped oscillations, persistent oscillations, and overdamped dynamics via Rabi flopping. Recent phase-coherent nonlinear spectroscopy experiments can be modeled by solving the full nonlinear quantum dynamics including self-consistent light-matter coupling.

Phase-resolved terahertz nanoimaging of W Te 2 microcrystals

The terahertz (THz) electrodynamics of few-layer W⁢Te 2 is dominated by the plasmon response. However, THz surface plasmons (SPs) with long wavelengths in two-dimensional exfoliated crystals are typically confined by the lateral geometry. Direct visualization of the plasmonic standing wave patterns is challenging due to the spatial confinement and low quality factor of the SP, especially for samples that are only a few monolayers thick. Here, we resolve subtle real-space features of the plasmonic response of W⁢Te 2 by augmenting more common scattering amplitude experiments with the phase contrast accomplished within the time-domain version of THz nanoimaging. Amplitude and phase images allow us to quantitatively evaluate the evolution of the plasmonic response at cryogenic temperatures in samples with variable thickness from 3 to 12 monolayers. Further, the proposed imaging modality is universally applicable to the THz near-field nanoscopy of low-dimensional materials.

Analytical model and dynamical phase-field simulation of terahertz transmission across ferroelectrics

Here, we theoretically investigate the steady-state transmission of continuous terahertz (THz) wave across a freestanding ferroelectric slab. Based on the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory of ferroelectrics and the coupled equations of motion for polarization and electromagnetic (EM) waves, we derive the analytical expressions of the frequency- and thickness-dependent dielectric susceptibility and transmission coefficient at the thin slab limit in the harmonic excitation regime. When the slab thickness is much smaller than the THz wavelength in the ferroelectric, the analytical predictions agree well with the numerical simulations from a dynamical phase-field model that incorporates the coupled dynamics of strain, polarization, and EM wave in multiphase systems. At larger thicknesses, the transmission is mainly determined by the frequency-dependent attenuation of THz waves in the ferroelectric and the formation of a standing polarization/THz wave. Our results advance the understanding of the interaction between THz wave and ferroelectrics and suggest the potential of exploiting ferroelectrics to achieve low-heat-dissipation, nonvolatile voltage modulation of THz transmission for high-data-rate wireless communication.

High-field/high-frequency electron spin resonances of Fe-doped β − Ga 2 O 3 by terahertz generalized ellipsometry: Monoclinic symmetry effects

We demonstrate detection and measurement of electron paramagnetic spin resonances (EPR) of iron defects in β − Ga 2 O 3 utilizing generalized ellipsometry at frequencies between 110 and 170 GHz. The experiments are performed on an Fe-doped single crystal in a free-beam configuration in reflection at 45 ∘ and magnetic fields between 3 and 7 T. In contrast with low-field, low-frequency EPR measurements, we observe all five transitions of the s = 5 / 2 high-spin state Fe 3 + simultaneously. We confirm that ferric Fe 3 + is predominantly found at octahedrally coordinated Ga sites. We obtain the full set of fourth-order monoclinic zero-field splitting parameters for both octahedrally and tetrahedrally coordinated sites by employing measurements at multiple sample azimuth rotations. The capability of high-field EPR allows us to demonstrate that simplified second-order orthorhombic spin Hamiltonians are insufficient, and fourth-order terms as well as consideration of the monoclinic symmetry are needed. These findings are supported by computational approaches based on density-functional theory for second-order and on ligand-field theory for fourth-order parameters of the spin Hamiltonian. Terahertz ellipsometry is a way to measure spin resonances in a cavity-free setup. Its possibility of varying the probe frequency arbitrarily without otherwise changing the experimental setup offers unique means of truly disentangling different components of highly anisotropic spin Hamiltonians. Theory of nonlinear terahertz susceptibility in ferroelectrics

An analytical theory is developed for predicting the nonlinear susceptibility of ionic polarization to continuous electromagnetic waves in both bulk and strained thin film ferroelectrics. Using a perturbation method for solving the nonlinear equation of motion for ionic polarization within the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory, the full second-order nonlinear susceptibility tensor is derived as a function of frequency, temperature, and strain. Here, the theory predicts the coexistence of a significantly enhanced second-order dielectric susceptibility and a relatively low dielectric loss in BaTiO 3 films with a strain-stabilized monoclinic ferroelectric phase and in a strained SrTiO 3 film near its temperature-driven second-order ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition. In this paper, we establish a theoretical framework for predicting and exploiting nonlinear interactions between terahertz waves and ferroelectric materials and, more generally, suggest exciting opportunities to strain-engineer nonlinear dynamical properties of ferroelectrics beyond the static and quasistatic limits.

Ultrafast dynamics of a fermion chain in a terahertz field-driven optical cavity

In this article, we study the effect of a terahertz field-driven single cavity mode for ultrafast control of a fermion chain with dissipation-induced nonlinearity and quadratic coupling to an infrared-active phonon mode. Unlike the first-order phase transition in the nonequilibrium steady state of the system without a cavity or with a high-quality cavity, we find that a realistic dissipation in a low-quality driven cavity process prevents such a transition. Without realistic photon loss from the cavity, the transition only survives for the lower phonon-polariton branch with strong drive; a weak laser field fails to induce the phase transition and renders the polaritons symmetrical. The ability to control the phase transition is crucial for realizing strongly modulated steady states; we propose experimentally feasible regimes where this occurs.

Onset of interfacial waves in the terahertz spectrum of a nanoparticle suspension

We used inelastic x-ray scattering to gain insight into the complex terahertz dynamics of a diluted Au-nanoparticle suspension in glycerol. Here, we observe that, albeit sparse, Au nanoparticles leave clear signatures on the dynamic response of the system, the main one being an additional mode propagating at the nanoparticle-glycerol interface. A Bayesian inferential analysis of the line shape reveals that such a mode, at variance with conventional acoustic modes, keeps a hydrodynamiclike behavior well beyond the continuous limit and down to subnanometer distances.

Terahertz Second-Harmonic Generation from Lightwave Acceleration of Symmetry-Breaking Nonlinear Supercurrents

We report terahertz (THz) light-induced second harmonic generation, in superconductors with inversion symmetry that forbid even-order nonlinearities. The THz second harmonic emission vanishes above the superconductor critical temperature and arises from precession of twisted Anderson pseudospins at a multicycle, THz driving frequency that is not allowed by equilibrium symmetry. We explain the microscopic physics by a dynamical symmetry breaking principle at sub-THz-cycle by using quantum kinetic modeling of the interplay between strong THz-lightwave nonlinearity and pulse propagation. In this work, the resulting nonzero integrated pulse area inside the superconductor leads to light-induced nonlinear supercurrents due to subcycle Cooper pair acceleration, in contrast to dc-biased superconductors, which can be controlled by the band structure and THz driving field below the superconducting gap.

Total Angular Momentum Dichroism of the Terahertz Vortex Beams at the Antiferromagnetic Resonances

Here, terahertz vortex beams with different superposition of the orbital angular momentum $\textit{l}$ = ± 1, ±2, ±3, and ±4 and spin angular momentum σ = ±1 were used to study antiferromagnetic (AFM) resonances in TbFe 3 (BO 3 ) 4 and Ni 3 TeO 6 single crystals. In both materials we observed a strong vortex beam dichroism for the AFM resonances that are split in external magnetic field. The magnitude of the vortex dichroism is comparable to that for conventional circular dichroism due to σ. The selection rules at the AFM resonances are governed by the total angular momentum of the vortex beam: $\textit{j}$ = σ + $\textit{l}$. In particular, for $\textit{l}$ = ±2, ±3, and ±4 the sign of $\textit{l}$ is shown to dominate over that for conventional circular polarization σ.

Controlling the orbital Hall effect in gapped bilayer graphene in the terahertz regime

We study the orbital Hall effect (OHE) in the AC regime using bilayer graphene (BLG) as a prototypical material platform. While the unbiased BLG has gapless electronic spectra, applying a perpendicular electric field creates an energy band gap that can be continuously tuned from zero to high values. By exploiting this flexibility, we demonstrate the ability to control the behavior of AC orbital Hall conductivity. Particularly, we demonstrate that the orbital Hall conductivity at the neutrality point changes its signal at a critical frequency, the value of which is proportional to the perpendicular electric field. For BLG with narrow band gaps, the active frequency region for the AC OHE may extend to a few terahertz, which is experimentally accessible with current technologies. We also consider the introduction of a perpendicular magnetic field in the weak-coupling regime using first-order perturbation theory to illustrate how the breaking of time-reversal symmetry enables the emergence of the AC charge Hall effect in the charge-doped situation and modifies the AC orbital Hall conductivity. Our calculations suggest that BLG with narrow band gaps is a practical candidate for investigating time-dependent orbital angular momentum transport. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Coherent Spin Pumping Originated from Sub-Terahertz Néel Vector Dynamics in Easy Plane α -Fe 2 O 3 /Pt

We present a thorough study of spin-to-charge current interconversion in bulk and thin films of (0001) 𝛼-Fe2O3/Pt heterostructures by all-optical polarization-controlled microwave excitation at sub-Terahertz frequencies. Our results demonstrate that coherent spin pumping is generated through excitations of both the q-FM and q-AFM modes of antiferromagnetic resonance, provided that the corresponding selection rules are met. Our findings significantly advance current understanding of spin pumping in easy-plane antiferromagnets not only by claiming a substantial contribution from the Néel-vector dynamics of the q-AFM mode but also by experimentally determining the relative strength of the intra- and cross-sublattice components of the spin-mixing conductance, challenging recent reports where the absence of spin pumping from the q-AFM mode in Hematite was interpreted as a complete cancellation between these two components. We also provide an explanation for the previously reported observations and show how the q-AFM spin pumping actually vanishes for thin films, which we speculate being either due to an increased level of inhomogeneities or to insufficient film thickness for the q-AFM mode to fully realize.

Volt-per-Ångstrom terahertz fields from X-ray free-electron lasers

The electron linear accelerators driving modern X-ray free-electron lasers can emit intense, tunable, quasi-monochromatic terahertz (THz) transients with peak electric fields of V Å -1 and peak magnetic fields in excess of 10 T when a purpose-built, compact, superconducting THz undulator is implemented. New research avenues such as X-ray movies of THz-driven mode-selective chemistry come into reach by making dual use of the ultra-short GeV electron bunches, possible by a rather minor extension of the infrastructure.

A Perspective on the Impact of Group Delay Dispersion in Future Terahertz Wireless Systems

This article discusses the challenges and opportunities of managing group delay dispersion (GDD), and its relation to the performance standards of future sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication systems utilizing terahertz frequency waves. The unique susceptibilities of 6G systems to GDD are described, along with a quantitative description of the sources of GDD, including multipath, rough surface scattering, intelligent reflecting surfaces, and propagation through the atmosphere. An experimental case-study is presented that confirms previous models quantifying the impact of atmospheric GDD. Several GDD manipulation strategies are presented, illustrating their hindered effectiveness in the 6G context. Conversely, some benefits of leveraging GDD to enhance 6G systems, such as improved security and simplified hardware, are also discussed. Finally, a perspective on using photonic GDD control devices is provided, revealing quantitative benefits that may unburden existing equalization schemes. Here, the article argues that GDD will uniquely and significantly impact some 6G systems, but that its careful consideration along with new mitigation strategies, including photonic devices, will help optimize system performance. The conclusion provides a perspective to guide future research in this area.

Electronic interactions in Dirac fluids visualized by nano-terahertz spacetime interference of electron-photon quasiparticles

Ultraclean graphene at charge neutrality hosts a quantum critical Dirac fluid of interacting electrons and holes. Interactions profoundly affect the charge dynamics of graphene, which is encoded in the properties of its electron-photon collective modes: surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Here, we show that polaritonic interference patterns are particularly well suited to unveil the interactions in Dirac fluids by tracking polaritonic interference in time at temporal scales commensurate with the electronic scattering. Spacetime SPP interference patterns recorded in terahertz (THz) frequency range provided unobstructed readouts of the group velocity and lifetime of polariton that can be directly mapped onto the electronic spectral weight and the relaxation rate. Our data uncovered prominent departures of the electron dynamics from the predictions of the conventional Fermi-liquid theory. The deviations are particularly strong when the densities of electrons and holes are approximately equal. The proposed spacetime imaging methodology can be broadly applied to probe the electrodynamics of quantum materials.

Terahertz stimulated parametric downconversion of a magnon mode in an antiferromagnet

Parametric amplification, where one signal is enhanced by the action of another, offers both practical utility for boosting weak signals and fundamental insights into the nonlinear coupling between degrees of freedom. In condensed matter systems, interactions between collective modes offer avenues for nonlinear coherent manipulation of coupled excitations and quantum phases. Antiferromagnets, with inherently coupled magnon modes, provide a promising platform for nonlinear control of spin waves and magnetization. However, nonlinear magnon-magnon interactions have been only partially elaborated, leaving key gaps in the prospects for potential ultrahigh-bandwidth magnonic signal processing. Here, we excite two distinct coherent magnon modes in an antiferromagnet and find that the magnon mode with a lower frequency undergoes amplification when the higher-frequency mode is driven. We unveil the nonlinear excitation pathways of this stimulated parametric downconversion process by using polarization-selective two-dimensional terahertz spectroscopy. Our work provides fundamental insights into nonlinear magnonics in antiferromagnets, laying the groundwork for forthcoming spintronic and magnonic devices.

Terahertz nano-imaging of metal-insulator transition in Cd 2 Os 2 O 7

The osmate pyrochlore Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 supports an antiferromagnet insulator ground state with an all-in/all-out (AIAO) spin ordering at low temperature. Above 225 K, Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 becomes a paramagnetic metal whereas the mechanism of this metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) remains elusive. In this letter, we use cryogenic near-field technique operating at terahertz frequencies to study the evolution of low-energy response across the MIT. We observed a systematic variation of the magnitude of nano-THz signal across the transition, consistent with the trend in the direct-current conductivity. Conducting domain walls that dominate the nano-scale landscape of the conductivity of a closely related AIAO system Nd 2 Ir 2 O 7 are not apparent in Cd 2 Os 2 O 7
