Observational data from uncrewed systems over Southern Great Plains

Uncrewed Systems (UxS), including uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) and tethered balloon/kite systems (TBS), are significantly expanding observational capabilities in atmospheric science. Rapid adaptation of these platforms and the advancement of miniaturized instruments have resulted in an expanding number of data sets captured under various environmental conditions by the Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility. In 2021, observational data collected using ARM UxS platforms, including seven TigerShark UAS flights and 133 tethered balloon system (TBS) flights, were archived by the ARM Data Center and made publicly available to the user community https://adc.arm.gov/discovery/#/results/s::sgp*U3 and https://adc.arm.gov/discovery/#/results/s::sgp*tbs. These data streams provide new perspectives on spatial variability of atmospheric and surface parameters, helping to address critical science questions in Earth system science research. This manuscript describes the DOE UAS/TBS datasets, including information on the acquisition, collection, and quality control processes, and highlights the potential scientific contributions using UAS and TBS platforms.

Vertical column dual-comb spectroscopy to a TBS

Open-path dual-frequency-comb spectroscopy (DCS) is a broadband, high spectral resolution, and high precision method for measuring gas concentrations over kilometer-scale paths. It has been used for detection and quantification of emissions of pollutants, hazardous gasses, and greenhouse gasses (GHGs). DCS has been shown to measure trace-gas mixing ratios with 0.14%-0.4% agreement between instruments. To achieve high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) with DCS, comb light is targeted onto a retroreflector at the end of the measurement path, which returns the signal to a detector co-located with the launch signal. Installing the retroreflector on a mobile platform such as a balloon or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) extends the capabilities of DCS by enabling variable path lengths, greater mobility, and access to higher altitudes. Mobile-target DCS has many uses in plume and leak detection, emissions modeling, and planetary boundary layer (PBL) studies. It is a promising method for observing vertical distributions of GHGs and mixing processes in the PBL, which are difficult to measure but important for pollution and climate monitoring as well as for understanding transport of gasses through the atmosphere. Tethered balloons are an intriguing platform because they enable longer flight durations and higher altitudes than easily obtainable with a UAV and thus allow for column measurements up to and above the PBL. New measurements completed in October/November 2024 reach the highest altitudes above ground level yet achieved by mobile-target DCS. For these measurements, the retroreflector was mounted on a 7 m diameter tethered helium balloon. An actively tracking gimbal on the ground holds the DCS launch telescope and keeps the 5 cm beam pointed onto the retroreflector while the balloon is lifted, lowered, and moved by wind and turbulence.

Stretchable electronic systems with containment chambers

The present invention provides electronic systems, including device arrays, comprising functional device(s) and/or device component(s) at least partially enclosed via one or more containment chambers, such that the device(s) and/or device component(s) are at least partially, and optionally entirely, immersed in a containment fluid. Useful containment fluids for use in containment chambers of electronic devices of the invention include lubricants, electrolytes and/or electronically resistive fluids. In some embodiments, for example, electronic systems of the invention comprise one or more electronic devices and/or device components provided in free-standing and/or tethered configurations that decouple forces originating upon deformation, stretching or compression of a supporting substrate from the free standing or tethered device or device component.

Real-time and Autonomous Water Quality Monitoring System Based on Remotely Operated Vehicle

Existing water quality monitoring systems near hydropower facilities are limited by the lack of mobility of the sensors’ carrier platform. Most systems use a buoy, a mounting fixture attached to a solid structure, or a human worker, which significantly limits the selection of the sampling sites and poses safety risks during data collection and equipment maintenance. To improve on this technology, we developed an autonomous water quality monitoring system that can operate in dangerous water environments near hydropower facilities for water sampling at multiple locations. The goal is to enable safe, timely, and comprehensive water-quality data collection; maximize power generation revenue with improved operational control; and reduce Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and state water quality monitoring costs for compliance. The system incorporates a remotely operated vehicle as the mobile monitoring platform, a dissolved oxygen sensor for monitoring water quality, a tether management system for automatically winding the tether, a solar mobile docking platform for suppling power to the ROV, and a web-based graphical user interface for data post-processing and visualization. In addition, preliminary field research are presented to demonstrate the system capabilities.

Numerical Modelling of a Two-Body Point Absorber Featuring Variable Geometry

This work presents a novel wave energy converter (WEC) device concept that incorporates variable geometry modules into a two-body point absorber type WEC. The variable geometry modules consist of air inflatable bags in the surface float and a water inflatable ring in the reaction body. The variable geometry floats are able to provide greater control over the device hydrodynamics; they can be inflated or deflated to emphasize either power absorption or load shedding. The device geometry is controlled in a quasi-static fashion, while the power take-off (PTO) unit is controlled on a wave-to-wave timescale. The surface float is tethered directly to the submerged reaction body through PTO tether lines. A linear time-domain analysis, conducted using open-source Wave Energy Converter (WEC-Sim) software, was used to estimate the absorbed power of the WEC in sea states defined by the Wave Energy Prize. WEC power performance was weighted against the expected capital cost of building the load bearing structure of the device, providing an estimated ACE value. The inclusion of the variable geometry modules was shown to be effective in altering the device geometry to improve power capture with a near proportional increase in expected costs, providing a nearly constant power-to-cost ratio.
