On-PIC Light Source Integration & Micro-dispensing of Solder Paste for Flip Chip Application

To reach the next level benefits of photonic integrated circuits (PICs), the Integrated Photonic Systems Roadmap-International describes the necessity of either heterogeneous or hybrid integration of light sources [1]. A new approach for hybrid integration is Photonic Wire Bonding where 3D nanolithography is used to pattern a polymer waveguide that connects light sources to PIC waveguides. The waveguides resemble electrical wire bonds and essentially do the same as their electrical counterpart for packaging photonic chips together. In order to reap the full benefits of a photonic wire bonds, the light source must be carefully packaged. In this work I seek to expand RIT’s photonic packaging capability by establishing a packaging process to integrate light sources, specifically an Indium Phosphide distributed feedback lasers and a reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers, directly onto a photonic integrated circuits. Another necessary requirement for PIC packaging is densely integrated electrical connectivity. In this thesis I developed a fine pitch flip chip interconnect technique demonstrated using gold stud bumps in conjunction with micro-dispensed solder paste. This work opens the door to high density photonic flip chip applications. The micro-dispensed solder paste dots having diameters 50-125 µm are currently being tested at a pitch of 150 µm . The gold stud bumps are formed with 1mil gold wire creating bumps with a diameter of 40-60 µm depending on specific parameter values. These capabilities will allow RIT to assemble and test novel photonic integrated devices, cutting down on the time and cost associated with third party assembly and tests facilities. Thereby keeping RIT at the forefront of photonic research.

Update on Waveguide-Embedded Differential MMIC Amplifiers

There is an update on the subject matter of Differential InP HEMT MMIC Amplifiers Embedded in Waveguides (NPO-42857) NASA Tech Briefs, Vol. 33, No. 9 (September 2009), page 35. To recapitulate: Monolithic microwave integrated-circuit (MMIC) amplifiers of a type now being developed for operation at frequencies of hundreds of gigahertz contain InP high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) in a differential configuration. The MMICs are designed integrally with, and embedded in, waveguide packages. The instant work does not mention InP HEMTs but otherwise reiterates part of the subject matter of the cited prior article, with emphasis on the following salient points: An MMIC is mounted in the electric-field plane ("E-plane") of a waveguide and includes a finline transition to each differential-amplifier stage. The differential configuration creates a virtual ground within each pair of transistor-gate fingers, eliminating the need for external radio-frequency grounding. This work concludes by describing a single-stage differential submillimeter-wave amplifier packaged in a rectangular waveguide and summarizing results of tests of this amplifier at frequencies of 220 and 305 GHz.

Generative large language models for predictive maintenance planning

Maintenance planning and the generation of necessary components for tasks can prove time-consuming and complex. Automating the creation of recurring or similar tasks by leveraging previous planning packages and data, while uncovering insights to automate planning package generation, presents an opportunity to conserve valuable time and resources. This work aims to harness the textual and probabilistic capabilities of large language models (LLMs) to automate the generation of planning packages. Utilizing diverse data sources ranging from raw data to handwritten text, both singular and collaborative LLMs are trained and tested. Results demonstrate their capability to generate essential planning package components, effectively replicating the statistical patterns in the data. This demonstrates the use of these tools inside a digital asset for automated planning. This work outlines a methodology for constructing datasets, a training suite, and evaluation methods for LLM-based textual and conversational planning tools utilized in an asset digital twin. Results indicate that the fine-tuned models generate estimated planning information within the statistical ranges observed in real maintenance data. The models achieve high accuracy (>90%) in document question-answering and instruction generation tasks. Furthermore, the conversational retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) assistant system achieves 100% document retrieval accuracy, while conversational information capture exceeds 98% across the majority of work-package assistant modules.

New concepts for HgI2 scintillator gamma ray spectroscopy

The primary goals of this project are development of the technology for HgI2 photodetectors (PD's), development of a HgI2/scintillator gamma detector, development of electronics, and development of a prototype gamma spectrometer. Work on the HgI2 PD's involved HgI2 purification and crystal growth, detector surface and electrical contact studies, PD structure optimization, encapsulation and packaging, and testing. Work on the HgI2/scintillator gamma detector involved a study of the optical - mechanical coupling for the optimization of CsI(Tl)/HgI2 gamma ray detectors and determination of the relationship between resolution versus scintillator type and size. The development of the electronics focused on low noise amplification circuits using different preamp input FET's and the use of a coincidence technique to maximize the signal, minimize the noise contribution in the gamma spectra, and improve the overall system resolution.

Safe Handling Practices

In 1977 Compugraphic Corporation was experiencing an unacceptable failure rate on microelectronic chips. Company engineers suspected that static electricity was causing the trouble because some electronic components are highly susceptible to damage by electrostatic charge. From a NASA Tech Brief, they learned that Rockwell International had prepared a report on safe handling practices for electronic components. NASA provided a Technical Support Package detailing 50 safe handling procedures affecting workers, work areas, equipment and packaging materials. Where poor practices were discovered, re-education of employees and other corrective measures were undertaken.

Flexible Foam Protection Materials for Portable Life Support System Packaging Study

This paper discusses the phase I effort in evaluating and selecting a light weight impact protection material for the Constellation Space Suit Element (CSSE) Portable Life Support System (PLSS) conceptual packaging study. A light weight material capable of holding and protecting the components inside the PLSS is required to demonstrate the viability of the flexible PLSS packaging concept. The material needs to distribute, dissipate, and absorb the impact energy of the PLSS falling on the lunar surface. It must also be robust to consistently perform over several Extravehicular Activity (EVA) missions in the extreme lunar thermal vacuum environment. This paper documents the performance requirements for selecting a foam protection material, and the methodologies for evaluating some commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) foam material candidates. It also presents the mechanical properties and impact drop tests results of the foam material candidates. The results of this study suggest that a foam based flexible protection system is a viable solution for PLSS packaging. However, additional works are needed to optimize COTS foam or to develop a composite foam system that will meet all the performance requirements for the CSSE PLSS flexible packaging.

Flexible Foam Protection Materials for Constellation Space Suit Element Portable Life Support Subsystem Packaging Study

This paper discusses the effort in evaluating and selecting a light weight impact protection material for the Constellation Space Suit Element (CSSE) Portable Life Support Subsystem (PLSS) conceptual packaging study. A light weight material capable of holding and protecting the components inside the PLSS is required to demonstrate the viability of the flexible PLSS packaging concept. The material needs to distribute, dissipate, and absorb the impact energy of the PLSS falling on the lunar surface. It must also be very robust and function in the extreme lunar thermal vacuum environment for up to one hundred Extravehicular Activity (EVA) missions. This paper documents the performance requirements for selecting a foam protection material, and the methodologies for evaluating commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) foam protection materials. It also presents the materials properties test results and impact drop test results of the various foam materials evaluated in the study. The findings from this study suggest that a foam based flexible protection system is a viable solution for PLSS packaging. However, additional works are needed to optimize COTS foam properties or to develop a composite foam system that will meet all the performance requirements for the CSSE PLSS flexible packaging.

Implementation of interconnect simulation tools in spice

Accurate computer simulation of high speed digital computer circuits and communication circuits requires a multimode approach to simulate both the devices and the interconnects between devices. Classical circuit analysis algorithms (lumped parameter) are needed for circuit devices and the network formed by the interconnected devices. The interconnects, however, have to be modeled as transmission lines which incorporate electromagnetic field analysis. An approach to writing a multimode simulator is to take an existing software package which performs either lumped parameter analysis or field analysis and add the missing type of analysis routines to the package. In this work a traditionally lumped parameter simulator, SPICE, is modified so that it will perform lossy transmission line analysis using a different model approach. Modifying SPICE3E2 or any other large software package is not a trivial task. An understanding of the programming conventions used, simulation software, and simulation algorithms is required. This thesis was written to clarify the procedure for installing a device into SPICE3E2. The installation of three devices is documented and the installations of the first two provide a foundation for installation of the lossy line which is the third device. The details of discussions are specific to SPICE, but the concepts will be helpful when performing installations into other circuit analysis packages.

Packaging Concerns and Techniques for Large Devices: Challenges for Complex Electronics

NASA is going to have to accept the use of non-hermetic packages for complex devices. There are a large number of packaging options available. Space application subjects the packages to stresses that they were probably not designed for (vacuum for instance). NASA has to find a way of having assurance in the integrity of the packages. There are manufacturers interested in qualifying non-hermetic packages to MIL-PRF-38535 Class V. Government space users are agreed that Class V should be for hermetic packages only. NASA is working on a new Class for non-hermetic packages for M38535 Appendix B, "Class Y". Testing for package integrity will be required but can be package specific as described by a Package Integrity Test Plan. The plan is developed by the manufacturer and approved by DSCC and government space.

High resolution ultrasonic spectroscopy system for nondestructive evaluation

With increased demand for high resolution ultrasonic evaluation, computer based systems or work stations become essential. The ultrasonic spectroscopy method of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) was used to develop a high resolution ultrasonic inspection system supported by modern signal processing, pattern recognition, and neural network technologies. The basic system which was completed consists of a 386/20 MHz PC (IBM AT compatible), a pulser/receiver, a digital oscilloscope with serial and parallel communications to the computer, an immersion tank with motor control of X-Y axis movement, and the supporting software package, IUNDE, for interactive ultrasonic evaluation. Although the hardware components are commercially available, the software development is entirely original. By integrating signal processing, pattern recognition, maximum entropy spectral analysis, and artificial neural network functions into the system, many NDE tasks can be performed. The high resolution graphics capability provides visualization of complex NDE problems. The phase 3 efforts involve intensive marketing of the software package and collaborative work with industrial sectors.

ML-Based Reconstruction in a Pixelated LArTPC

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will address open issues in neutrino physics such as the measurement of the CP-violating phase in neutrino oscillations and the neutrino mass ordering. DUNE is expected to have the most energetic neutrino beam in the world. The 2x2 demonstrator is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC), with four modules, operated as a prototype for the DUNE Liquid Argon Near Detector (ND-LAr). Each module in the 2x2 demonstrator is 0.67m x 0.67m x 1.8m. Based on the ArgonCube design concept, the 2x2 features a novel pixelated charge readout and advanced high-coverage photon detection system. Machine learning can be used to form a complete reconstruction pipeline for physics interactions in the 2x2 detector. This poster will describe the workings of a package under development called SPINE and its current performance.
