Distributed antenna system and method

System and methods are disclosed for employing one or more radiators having non-unique phase centers mounted to a body with respect to a plurality of transmitters to determine location characteristics of the body such as the position and/or attitude of the body. The one or more radiators may consist of a single, continuous element or of two or more discrete radiation elements whose received signals are combined. In a preferred embodiment, the location characteristics are determined using carrier phase measurements whereby phase center information may be determined or estimated. A distributed antenna having a wide angle view may be mounted to a moveable body in accord with the present invention. The distributed antenna may be utilized for maintaining signal contact with multiple spaced apart transmitters, such as a GPS constellation, as the body rotates without the need for RF switches to thereby provide continuous attitude and position determination of the body.

Millimeter-wave antenna system

Parabolic reflectors fabricated from Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) composite material will not distort their shape by more than 3 percent of millimeter wavelength, despite large temperature differences on reflector surfaces. CFRP has zero thermal expansion. It is derived from charred polyacrylonitrite plastic filaments that are combined with epoxy resin.

A five-frequency radiometer antenna system feed horn

The feasibility of operating a five frequency feed as a radiometer for use on board a Nimbus type satellite was investigated. Five narrow band frequencies (6.6, 10.7, 18.5, 21.5 and 33 GHz) were multiplexed onto a single receive feed employing dual linear polarization at each frequency with a better than 25 db isolation between each polarization. The production of a horn design which can illuminate a parabolic reflector segment with an f/D ratio of approximately 0.4, producing an edge illumination of approximately -20 db is described. The final overall design is presented with results showing that this design concept has an acceptable electrical performance.

RF performance of a proposed L-band antenna system

Scale model work to determine efficiencies and bandwidth were made on a smooth wall dual mode feedhorn to study the feasibility of its use at L-Band for the Venus Balloon Project. Measured feedhorn patterns were made and scattered from a symmetrical subreflector. A perturbation technique was then used to predict efficiencies due to scanning effects. A correction for the asymmetrical subreflector was also made. Tables of results and patterns are included.

QUASAT: An orbiting very long baseline interferometer program using large space antenna systems

QUASAT, which stands for QUASAR SATELLITE, is the name given to a new mission being studied by NASA. The QUASAT mission concept involves a free flying Earth orbiting large radio telescope, which will observe astronomical radio sources simultaneously with ground radio telescopes. The primary goal of QUASAT is to provide a system capable of collecting radio frequency data which will lead to a better understanding of extremely high energy events taking place in a variety of celestial objects including quasars, galactic nuclei, interstellar masers, radio stars and pulsars. QUASAT's unique scientific contribution will be the increased resolution in the emission brightness profile maps of the celestial objects.

Effective conductivity of wire mesh reflectors for space deployable antenna systems

This report summarizes efforts to characterize the measurement of conductive mesh and smooth surfaces using proximity measurements for a dielectric resonator. The resonator operates in the HEM11 mode and is shown to have an evanescent field behavior in the vicinity of the sample surface, raising some question to the validity of measurements requiring near normal incidence on the material. In addition, the slow radial field decay outside of the dielectric resonator validates the sensitivity to the planar supporting structure and potential radiation effects. Though these concerns become apparent along with the sensitivity to the gap between the dielectric and the material surface, the basic concept of the material measurement using dielectric resonators has been verified for useful comparison of material surface properties. The properties, particularly loss, may be obtained by monitoring the resonant frequency along with the resonator quality factor (Q), 3 dB bandwidth, or the midband transmission amplitude. Comparison must be made to known materials to extract the desired data.

Improved Dichroics For Microwave Reflector Antenna Systems

Panel contains array of grid and square conductive loops as array elements designed to reflect most of incident electromagnetic radiation in K(subu) band (13.5 to 15.5 GHz) and to pass that in X band (7 to 9 GHz). Designed to exhibit this dichroic property at angles of incidence up to 40 degrees in transverse electric, transverse magnetic, or circular polarization. Concept of gridded-square-loop dichroic array related to double-loop dichroic arrays described in "Frequency-Selective Microwave Reflectors" (NPO-18701). Improved version exhibits smaller shift of resonant frequency with angle of incidence.

Global Positioning System Antenna Fixed Height Tripod Adapter

An improved Global Positioning em antenna adaptor allows fixed antenna height measurements by removably attaching an adaptor plate to a conventional surveyor's tripod. Antenna height is controlled by an antenna boom which is a fixed length rod. The antenna is attached to one end of the boom. The opposite end of the boom tapers to a point sized to fit into a depression at the center of survey markers. The boom passes through the hollow center of a universal ball joint which is mounted at the center of the adaptor plate so that the point of the rod can be fixed in the marker's central depression. The mountains of the ball joint allow the joint to be moved horizontally in any direction relative to the tripod. When the ball joint is moved horizontally, the angle between the boom and the vertical changes because the boom's position is fixed at its lower end. A spirit level attached to the rod allows an operator to determine when the boom is plumb. The position of the ball joint is adjusted horizontally until the boom is plumb. At that time the antenna is positioned exactly over the center of the monument and the elevation of the antenna is precisely set by the length of the boom.

Satellite dual antenna pointing system

A satellite antenna pointing system for separately pointing separated transmit and receive high gain antenna systems includes means for separately and sequentially applying a beacon signal to the transmit and receive antenna systems and a broad beam width antenna which has a coverage area greater than the overall coverage region of the spot beam antenna systems. The system includes ground stations located at or near the periphery of the overall coverage region adapted to receive these beacon signals. At a central control station these beacon signals are compared to provide first signals proportional to the ratio of said beacon signals received from said transmit antenna system and said broad beam width antenna and second signals proportional to the ratio of said beacon signals received from said satellite receive antenna system and said broad beam width antenna. The central station generates from said first signals transmit antenna control signals which are sent to the satellite to control the orientation of said transmit antenna system. Likewise, the central control station generates from the second signals receiver antenna control signals which are applied to the satellite to control the orientation of the satellite receive antenna system.

Scannable beam forming interferometer antenna array system

An antenna array is described which comprises three interferometer pairs of antenna elements with selected spacings made to form a single beam which is readily scannable. All spatial frequencies generated by a signal and intercepted by the array are derived from a signal processing technique applied to the array. The array samples space in the spatial frequency domain while the signal processing technique utilizes real time convolution of functions in the spectral frequency domain. Summation of the appropriate spatial frequencies is equilvalent to a Fourier transform operation, yielding the location of the signal source in space. Resolution and freedom from interference of the interferometer system is equal to that of a fully filled array of the same aperture size containing element spacings of one half wavelength. An antenna array system comprising four antenna elements forming six interferometer pairs with a resolution equal to that of a sixteen element array with spacings of one half wavelength is described, as well as other multiples of one quarter wavelength of partial multiples of a wave length.

A phased array tracking antenna for vehicles

An antenna system including antenna elements and a satellite tracking method is considered a key technology in implementing land mobile satellite communications. In the early stage of land mobile satellite communications, a mechanical tracking antenna system is considered the best candidate for vehicles, however, a phased array antenna will replace it in the near future, because it has many attractive advantages such as a low and compact profile, high speed tracking, and potential low cost. Communications Research Laboratory is now developing a new phased array antenna system for land vehicles based on research experiences of the airborne phased array antenna, which was developed and evaluated in satellite communication experiments using the ETS-V satellite. The basic characteristics of the phased array antenna for land vehicles are described.
