Effect of Transverse Compression on the Dielectric Breakdown of Power Cable with Ethylene Propylene Rubber Insulation

Understanding of the failure mechanisms of submarine dynamic power cables (SDPC) is critical for innovative design to meet the 2035 cost reduction target of U.S. DOE Floating Offshore Wind Shot. This is important because the current design suffers a significant failure rate in the field. This project explored a multiphysics approach and conducted systematic electro-thermo-mechanical (ETM) experimental study on the power cores extracted from a 15 kV power cable. The power cable had three cores of copper conductor and ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) insulation. An ETM testing system with transverse compression capability was developed. Mechanical loading induced dielectric breakdown. Increasing temperature from room temperature (RT, 22 degrees Celsius) to 90 degrees Celsius resulted in the 67% decrease in the failure mechanical load as defined by the dielectric breakdown. With the same temperature rise, the creep mechanical load was reduced by 70% at a given dielectric breakdown time. The post-test measurement revealed an impressive recovery of electrical resistance, although the dielectric breakdown occurred in the ETM test that would not be captured without the use of ETM testing.

Fabrication and Testing of a Stainless Steel Quartz Coaxial Cable Structure for High Temperature Measurement

This paper presents a stainless-steel quartz coaxial cable structure for distributed sensing of high temperatures. The coaxial cable sensor uses stainless steel as the inner and outer conductors and quartz as the insulator in order to achieve mechanical strength and temperature resilience. Girdle-shaped reflectors are fabricated on the quartz tubing by CNC grinding and CO 2 laser resurfacing. The sensor operates by measuring the temperature dependent change in the effective electromagnetic length between the two adjacent reflectors on the quartz tubing. A retaining collar is fabricated at the tip of the quartz tubing by 3D printing and laser resurfacing to secure the connection between the sensor and the signal cable. The prototype sensor was tested for high temperature measurements up to 600°C, and the performance characteristics of the sensor such as sensitivity, resolution uncertainty, repeatability, and stability were estimated based on the test results.

Long-Term High-Temperature High-Pressure Cable for Geothermal Logging Tools

Downhole logging tools are commonly used to characterize multi-thousand-foot geothermal wells. The elevated temperatures, pressures, and harsh chemical environments present significant challenges for the long-term operation of these tools, especially when real-time data transmission to the surface is required via data cable lines. Teflon-based single or multi-conductor cables with grease-filled cable heads are typically used for downhole tools. However, over extended periods of operation, the gr

Low Frequency Cable Dual Shield Penetration Using Complete Transfer Immittance Model

This report discusses low frequency coupling and subsequent penetration of a dual shield cable using a transfer immittance model with reciprocal sources. Configurations include: 1) where the cable is above a ground plane and shorted at both ends, 2) a monopole arrangement where it is shorted at one end and open at the other end, and 3) a monopole arrangement where the open end is loaded by a disc. The open circuit voltage within the cable is estimated for each case.

SMR Containment Cable and Electrical Penetration Assembly System

GAIN Project CRADA Number NFE-21-08839, entitled “SMR Containment Cable and EPA System” was initiated by the partnership of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Engineered Solutions Group (ESG) to test an ESG-designed Electrical Penetration Assembly and Containment Cabling System Qualified for not only SMR technologies, but also Advanced Reactors design. An Electrical Penetration Assembly (EPA) is a component used to allow electrical power and signal conductors as well as optical fiber through the nuclear reactor’s containment structure while maintaining a pressure barrier. The EPA ensures the containment's integrity both during the normal operation and also accident conditions by providing a sealed passage for power and signals. This project was undertaken to fill the equipment gap of EPA and Cabling Systems that require much more severe environmental requirements than legacy plant applications present due to their smaller containment volumes that result in high energy densities compared to legacy designs. This high energy density results in severe accident environments and also more severe normal operating conditions. This document describes cost effective approaches to qualify a unique EPA for Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technologies as legacy LWR EPA technologies will likely have inherent material performance insufficiencies. The DBA profiles for SMRs (and some Advanced Reactor Technologies) are more severe than the legacy qualification requirements making the design of the qualification testing system challenging as the temperatures and pressures can approach the limits permitted by ASME Pressure Vessel Code, as well as accident temperatures exceeding the capability of polymeric gaskets and dielectrics. Small Modular Reactors are designed to have, as the name suggests, modularity which implies sized for factory fabrication and subsequent assembly at the power plant site. SMR containment is much smaller than a legacy Light Water Reactor containment. The containment walls are likely to be comprised of stainless steel. Qualifying Electrical Penetration Assemblies (EPAs) through these steel vessels are of interest in this work. Methods are presented here that discuss critical safety and cost effectiveness for these SMR EPA’s test systems.

Checking flat conductor cable spacing by means of a moire pattern

Moire tester detects small variations in flat conductor cable spacing by a quick, visual inspection. This device compares the cable to be tested with the negative of a very precise standard cable. The moire, consisting of bands of light and dark zones and its irregularities, can be interpreted as errors in spacing.

Dynamics of a spinning space station with a counterweight connected by multiple cables.

A unique and relatively simple approach is presented for obtaining the linearized equations of motion. A conservative system consisting of two rigid bodies connected by any number of massless cables with linear axial stiffness is assumed. The cable forces and torques are expanded in a Taylor series about the equilibrium values of the system coordinates which results in a cable stiffness matrix. The method of obtaining the equilibrium values of the coordinates is discussed and results are presented. The range of validity of the linear model is determined by comparing results with a digital simulation of the nonlinear system.

A proposed adjustable RF cable connector

In system that requires negligible loss, it may be necessary to adjust cable length to exact multiple of transmitted wavelength. Adjustable cable connector saves time and cost by eliminating need to add to or cut from cable. Device was especially designed for use with high frequencies. For particular application, connector of suitable dimensions should be used.

The three dimensional motion and stability of a rotating space station-cable - Counterweight configuration

The three dimensional equations of motion for a cable connected space station - counterweight system are developed using a Lagrangian formulation. The system model employed allows for cable and end body damping and restoring effects. The equations are then linearized about the equilibrium motion and nondimensionalized. To first degree, the out-of-plane equations uncouple from the in-plane equations. Therefore, the characteristic polynomials for the in-plane and out-of-plane equations are developed and treated separately. From the general in-plane characteristic equation, necessary conditions for stability are obtained. The Routh-Hurwitz necessary and sufficient conditions for stability are derived for the general out-of-plane characteristic equation. Special cases of the in-plane and out-of-plane equations (such as identical end masses, and when the cable is attached to the centers of mass of the two end bodies) are then examined for stability criteria.

Design, development, fabrication and testing of high temperature Flat Conductor Cable (FCC)

The results are presented of a development program for a flat, 25-conductor signal cable and a flat, 3-conductor power cable. Flat cables employ conductors made of strips or flattened round copper conductors insulated with polyimide films. It is shown that conductor thickness ranges from 0.003 to 0.010 inch, and begins to soften and loose mechanical strength at temperatures above 200 C.
