Proposal from the NA61/SHINE Collaboration for update of European Strategy for Particle Physics

Building on the current program's success and driven by new physics challenges, the NA61/SHINE Collaboration proposes to continue measuring hadron production properties in reactions induced by hadron and ion beams after CERN Long Shutdown 3. These measurements are of significant interest to the heavy-ion, cosmic-ray, and neutrino physics communities and will focus on: - Investigating hadron production in the light-ion systems to explore the diagram of high-energy nuclear collisions, and to obtain new insight into the unexpected violation of isospin (flavor) symmetry recently observed by the experiment; - Measuring charm-anticharm correlations to gain unique insights into the production locality of charm and anticharm quark pairs; - Examining strangeness and multi-strangeness production to improve our understanding of the early Universe's evolution and neutron star formation; - Measuring cross sections relevant for cosmic-ray measurements, significantly boosting searches for new physics in our Galaxy; - Conducting hadron production measurements with proton, pion, and kaon beams for neutrino physics, enhancing the precision of hadron production data needed for initial neutrino flux predictions in neutrino oscillation experiments; - Measuring hadron production processes relevant for understanding the flux of atmospheric neutrinos, as well as neutrinos and muons from spallation sources. To achieve these objectives, a detector upgrade and a beam upgrade are required, with data-taking planned for the period 2029-2032 and beyond.

Renormalized quark masses using gradient flow

We propose a new and simple method for determining the renormalized quark masses from lattice simulations. Renormalized quark masses are an important input to many phenomenological applications, including searching and modeling physics beyond the Standard Model. The nonperturbative renormalization is performed using gradient flow combined with the short-flow-time expansion that is improved by renormalization group (RG) running to match to the $\overline{MS}$ scheme. Implementing the RG running perturbatively, we demonstrate this method works reliably at least up to the charm-quark mass and exhibits an easily attainable “windowing condition.” Using RBC/UKQCD’s (2+1)-flavor Shamir domain-wall fermion ensembles with Iwasaki gauge action, we find 𝑚 $\overline{MS}$ 𝑠⁡ (𝜇 = 2 GeV) = 89⁢(3) MeV and 𝑚 $\overline{MS}$ 𝑐 ⁡(𝜇 = 3 GeV) = 972⁢(16) MeV. These results predict the scale-independent ratio 𝑚 𝑐 /𝑚 𝑠 = 12.1⁢(4). Generalization to other observables is possible, providing an efficient approach to determine nonperturbatively renormalized fermionic observables like form factors or bag parameters from lattice simulations.

Search for CP violation and measurement of branching fractions and decay asymmetry parameters for Λ$^+_c$ → Λ h + and Λ$^+_c$ → Σ 0 h + ( h = K, π )

Here, we report a study of Λ$^+_c$ → Λ h + and Λ$^+_c$ → Σ 0 h + ( h = K, π ) decays based on a data sample of 980 fb -1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric e + e - collider. The first results of direct CP asymmetry in two-body singly Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) decays of charmed baryons are measured, A$^{dir}_{CP}(Λ^+_{c} → ΛK^{+})$ = +0.021 ± 0.026 ± 0.001 and A$^{dir}_{CP}(Λ^+_{c} → Σ^{0}K^{+})$ = +0.025 ± 0.054 ± 0.004. We also make the most precise measurement of the decay asymmetry parameters (α) for the four modes of interest and search for CP violation via the α-induced CP asymmetry (A$^α_{CP}$ ). We measure A$^α_{CP}$ ($Λ^+_{c} → ΛK^{+}$) = -0.023 ± 0.086 ± 0.071 and A$^α_{CP}$ ($Λ^+_{c} → Σ^{0}K^{+}$) = +0.08 ± 0.35 ± 0.14, which are the first A$^α_{CP}$ results for SCS decays of charmed baryons. We search for Λ -hyperon CP violation in $Λ^+_{c}$ → (Λ, Σ 0 )π + and find A$^α_{CP}$(Λ → pπ - ) = +0.013 ± 0.007 ± 0.011 . This is the first time that hyperon CP violation has been measured via Cabibbo-favored charm decays. No evidence of baryon CP violation is found. We also obtain the most precise branching fractions for two SCS Λ$^+_c$ decays, $\mathscr{B}$($Λ^+_{c} → ΛK^{+}$) = (6.57 ± 0.17 ± 0.11 ± 0.35) x 10 -4 and $\mathscr{B}$($Λ^+_{c} → Σ^{0}K^{+}$) = (3.58 ± 0.19 ±0.06 ±0.19) x 10 -4 . The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic, while the third uncertainties come from the uncertainties on the world average branching fractions of $Λ^+_{c}$ → (Λ, Σ 0 )π + .

Hint of a new scalar interaction in LHCb data?

Abstract We explain recent LHCb measurements of the lepton universality ratios, $$R_{D^{(*)}}^{\tau /\ell }\equiv \frac{\mathcal {B}(\bar{B} \rightarrow D^{(*)+} \tau ^- \bar{\nu }_\tau )}{\mathcal {B}(\bar{B} \rightarrow D^{(*)+}\ell ^- \bar{\nu }_\ell )}$$ R D ( ∗ ) τ / ℓ ≡ B ( B ¯ → D ( ∗ ) + τ - ν ¯ τ ) B ( B ¯ → D ( ∗ ) + ℓ - ν ¯ ℓ ) and $${R(\Lambda _c^+)}^{\tau /\ell } \equiv \frac{\mathcal {B}(\Lambda _b \rightarrow \Lambda _c^+ \tau ^- \bar{\nu }_{\tau })}{\mathcal {B}(\Lambda _b \rightarrow \Lambda _c^+ \ell ^- \bar{\nu }_{\ell })}$$ R ( Λ c + ) τ / ℓ ≡ B ( Λ b → Λ c + τ - ν ¯ τ ) B ( Λ b → Λ c + ℓ - ν ¯ ℓ ) with $$\ell =\mu $$ ℓ = μ , via new physics that affects $$R_D^{\tau /\ell }$$ R D τ / ℓ and $$R(\Lambda _c^+)^{\tau /\ell }$$ R ( Λ c + ) τ / ℓ but not $$R_{D^*}^{\tau /\ell }$$ R D ∗ τ / ℓ . The scalar operator in the effective theory for new physics is indicated. We find that the forward-backward asymmetry and $$\tau $$ τ polarization in $$\bar{B} \rightarrow D^+ \tau ^{-} \bar{\nu }_{\tau }$$ B ¯ → D + τ - ν ¯ τ and $$\Lambda _b \rightarrow \Lambda _c^+ \tau ^- \bar{\nu }_{\tau }$$ Λ b → Λ c + τ - ν ¯ τ decays are significantly affected by the scalar interaction. We construct a simple two Higgs doublet model as a realization of our scenario and consider lepton universality in semileptonic charm and top decays, radiative B decay, B -mixing, and $$Z \rightarrow b \bar{b}$$ Z → b b ¯ .

Discovering neutrino tridents at the Large Hadron Collider

Neutrino trident production of dilepton pairs is well recognized as a sensitive probe of both electroweak physics and physics beyond the Standard Model. Although a rare process, it could be significantly boosted by such new physics, and it also allows the electroweak theory to be tested in a new regime. We demonstrate that the forward neutrino physics program at the Large Hadron Collider offers a promising opportunity to measure for the first time, dimuon neutrino tridents with a statistical significance exceeding 5 σ , improving on the previous claims at the ∼ 3 σ level by the CHARM-II and CCFR collaborations while accounting for additional backgrounds later identified by the NuTeV collaboration. We present predictions for various proposed experiments and outline a specific experimental strategy to identify the signal and mitigate backgrounds, based on “reverse tracking” dimuon pairs in the FASER ν 2 detector. We also discuss prospects for constraining beyond Standard Model contributions to neutrino trident rates at high energies. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurement of the absolute branching fraction of Λ c + → p K S 0 η decays

Based on 586 pb -1 of e + e - annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 4.6 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the absolute branching fraction of $Λ^+_c$ → $pK^0_Sη$ decays is measured for the first time to be $B$($Λ^+_c$ → $pK^0_Sη$) = (0.414±0.084±0.028)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The result is compatible with a previous CLEO result on the relative branching fraction B ( Λ c + → p K S 0 η ) B ( Λ c + → p K − π + ) , and consistent with theoretical predictions of SU(3) flavor symmetry.

Observation of the W -Annihilation Process D s + → ω ρ + and Measurement of D s + → ϕ ρ + in D s + → π + π + π − π 0 π 0 Decays

We present the first amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of the decay D s + → π + π + π − π 0 π 0 , using e + e − collision data collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.33 fb − 1 , and report the first observation of the pure W -annihilation decay D s + → ω ρ + with a branching fraction of ( 0.99 ± 0.0 8 stat − 0.07 + 0.05 syst ) % . In comparison to the low significance of the D wave in the decay D s + → ϕ ρ + , the dominance of the D wave over the S and P waves, with a fraction of ( 51.85 ± 7.2 8 stat − 7.90 + 4.83 syst ) % observed in the decay D s + → ω ρ + , provides crucial information for the “polarization puzzle,” as well as for the understanding of charm meson decays. The branching fraction of D s + → π + π + π − π 0 π 0 is measured to be ( 4.41 ± 0.1 5 stat ± 0.1 3 syst ) % . Moreover, the branching fraction of D s + → ϕ ρ + is measured to be ( 3.98 ± 0.3 3 stat − 0.19 + 0.21 syst ) % , and the R ϕ = B ( ϕ → π + π − π 0 ) / B ( ϕ → K + K − ) is determined to be ( 0.222 ± 0.01 9 stat − 0.016 + 0.016 syst ), which is consistent with the previous measurement based on charm meson decays, but deviates from the results from e + e − annihilation and K − N scattering experiments by more than 3 σ . Modern Muon Physics: Selected Issues

The muon was discovered almost hundred years ago, but still remains largely a mystery. For a long time, the only difference between a muon and an electron was the approximately 200 times greater mass of the muon. However, with the later discovery of the charm quantum number, the muon played a decisive role in the formulation of the Standard Model of elementary particles, determining together with muon neutrino and the strange s and the charm c quarks the second generation of particles of this model. The equality of the reaction constant of muon decay with the constant of the vector interaction of beta-decay played a decisive role in the formulation of the conservation of the vector current (CVC) of the weak interaction of elementary particles. Processes involving muons testified in favor of the partial conservation of the axial current of weak interaction (PCAC), that is, one pion exchange in the interaction of the lepton and hadron currents. It was the muon that gave a rise to hopes of creating an alternative energy source within the framework of Muon Catalyzed Fusion (μCF). The possible realization of this process in the future as the intensity of muon beams increases can revolutionired energy supply. Nuclear fission by muons and the study of heavy-nucleus mesoatoms introduced muon physics into several separate branches of physical research.

Photoproduction of fully charmed tetraquark at electron-ion colliders

In this work, we investigate the inclusive photoproduction of the C -odd, S -wave fully charmed tetraquark at electron-ion colliders within the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization framework, at the lowest order in velocity and α s . The value of the NRQCD long-distance matrix element is estimated from two phenomenological potential models. Our studies reveal that the photoproduction of the 1 + − fully charmed tetraquark may be difficult to observe at HERA and the EicC; nevertheless, its observation prospects at the EIC appear to be bright. First Observation of a Three-Resonance Structure in e + e − → Nonopen Charm Hadrons

We report the measurement of the inclusive cross sections for e + e − → nOCH (where nOCH denotes non-open charm hadrons) with improved precision at center-of-mass (c.m.) energies from 3.645 to 3.871 GeV. We observe three resonances: R ( 3760 ) , R ( 3780 ) , and R ( 3810 ) with significances of 8.1 σ , 13.7 σ , and 8.8 σ , respectively. The R ( 3810 ) state is observed for the first time, while the R ( 3760 ) and R ( 3780 ) states are observed for the first time in the nOCH cross sections. Two sets of resonance parameters describe the energy-dependent line shape of the cross sections well. In set I [set II], the R ( 3810 ) state has mass ( 3805.7 ± 1.1 ± 2.7 ) [ ( 3805.7 ± 1.1 ± 2.7 ) ] MeV / c 2 , total width ( 11.6 ± 2.9 ± 1.9 ) [ ( 11.5 ± 2.8 ± 1.9 ) ] MeV , and an electronic width multiplied by the nOCH decay branching fraction of ( 10.9 ± 3.8 ± 2.5 ) [ ( 11.0 ± 3.4 ± 2.5 ) ] eV . In addition, we measure the branching fractions B [ R ( 3760 ) → nOCH ] = ( 25.2 ± 16.1 ± 30.4 ) % [ ( 6.4 ± 4.8 ± 7.7 ) % ] and B [ R ( 3780 ) → nOCH ] = ( 12.3 ± 6.6 ± 8.3 ) % [ ( 10.4 ± 4.8 ± 7.0 ) % ] for the first time. The R ( 3760 ) state can be interpreted as an open-charm (OC) molecular state, but containing a simple four-quark state component. The R ( 3810 ) state can be interpreted as a hadrocharmonium state. Charm mass effects in the static energy computed in 2+1+1 flavor lattice QCD

We report our analysis for the static energy in (2+1+1)-flavor QCD over a wide range of lattice spacings and several quark masses. We obtain results for the static energy out to distances of nearly 1 fm, allowing us to perform a simultaneous determination of the lattice scales $r_2$, $r_1$ and $r_0$ as well as the string tension, $\sigma$. While our results for ${r_0}/{r_1}$ and $r_0$$\sqrt{\sigma}$ agree with published (2+1)-flavor results, our result for ${r_1}/{r_2}$ differs significantly from the value obtained in the (2+1)-flavor case, likely due to the effect of the charm quark. We study in detail the effect of the charm quark on the static energy by comparing our results on the finest lattices with the previously published (2+1)-flavor QCD results at similar lattice spacing. The lattice results agree well with the two-loop perturbative expression of the static energy incorporating finite charm mass effects.
