Rare-Earth Permanent Magnet SmCo 5 for Chiral Interfacial Spin-Orbitronics

Interfacially asymmetric magnetic multilayers made of heavy metal/ferromagnet have attracted considerable attention in the spintronics community for accommodating spin-orbit torques (SOTs) and meanwhile for hosting chiral spin textures. In these multilayers, the accompanied interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (iDMI) permits the formation of Néel-type spin textures. While significant progresses have been made in Co, CoFeB, Co 2 FeAl, CoFeGd based multilayers, it would be intriguing to identify new magnetic multilayers that could enable spin-torque controllability and meanwhile host nanoscale skyrmions. In this report, first, thin films made of permanent magnet SmCo 5 with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are synthesized, in which the deterministic SOT switching, enabled by the spin Hall effect, in Pt/SmCo 5 /Ta trilayer is demonstrated. Further, the stabilization of room-temperature skyrmions with diameters ≈100 nm in [Pt/SmCo 5 /Ta] 15 , together with a skyrmionium-like spin texture in [Pt/SmCo 5 /Ir] 15 multilayers is shown. Based on the material specific parameters, micromagnetic simulations are also carried out. The results confirm the presence of chiral spin textures in this new material family. Through interfacial engineering, the results thus demonstrate that rare earth permanent magnets could be a new platform for studying interfacial chiral spintronics.

Observation of spontaneous x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in a chiral antiferromagnet

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) signals are usually absent in antiferromagnets. In this paper, we report the observation of spontaneous XMCD spectra originating from the inverse triangular spin structure, or the polarization of the cluster magnetic octupole, in the chiral antiferromagnet Mn 3 Sn thin film. Finally, the result is consistent with the recent theoretical predictions that the inverse triangular spin structure can give rise to finite XMCD signals in the absence of net magnetization [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn 89, 083703 (2020) and Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 157402 (2021)].

Restoring Symmetry and Enhancing Exchange via Chiral Molecular-Magnetic Hexagons

Modified behaviors of molecules, designed for device or energy applications, can occur due to lattice-molecule incompatibilities in point-group symmetries (PGS), long-range interactions between neighboring molecules, or latticemolecule charge transfer. Such sensitivities are prerequisite for the use of quantum molecules as devices, but removing certain broken symmetries is desirable from the standpoint of simplifying their behaviors. Here, we demonstrate symmetry restoration to molecular-magnetic lattices and show that it leads to strengthened exchange-coupling due to dipolar electrostatic interactions between neighboring molecules and due to manifestations of an earlier identification of a spin-sensitive slightly mobile electron by Hooshmand et al. Starting with a broken symmetry molecular magnet of current interest, we demonstrate a more robust structure composed of six molecular magnets on a h-BN-like surface. The broken point-group symmetry is healed by constructing interpenetrating equilateral triangular structures that are appropriately ratcheted to preserve three-fold rotational symmetry and inversion symmetry.

Noncollinear Ground State from a Four-Spin Chiral Exchange in a Tetrahedral Magnet

We propose a quartic chiral term m x m y m z ∇ • m for the energy density of a cubic ferromagnet with broken parity symmetry (point group T d ). We demonstrate that this interaction causes a phase transition from a collinear ferromagnetic state to a noncollinear magnetic cone ground state provided its strength exceeds the geometric mean of magnetic exchange and cubic anisotropy. The corresponding noncollinear ground state may also be additionally stabilized by an external magnetic field pointing along certain crystallographic directions. Here, the four-spin chiral exchange does also manifest itself in peculiar magnon spectra and favors spin waves with the wave vector that is perpendicular to the average magnetization direction.

Impact of the chiral asymmetry and a magnetic field on the passage of an energetic test parton in a QCD medium

We study the dependence of soft contribution to the energy loss of a test parton moving with a high velocity on the chiral imbalance and magnetic field in the QCD medium. A semiclassical approach is adopted to estimate the parton energy loss that takes into account the back-reaction on the parton due to the polarization effects of the QCD medium while traversing through the medium. We find that the motion of the parton is sensitive to the chiral asymmetry in the medium. Further, we investigate the effect of magnetic field-induced anisotropy on the energy transfer between the moving parton and the medium. Our results show that the energy loss of the parton is strongly influenced by the strength of the magnetic field as well as the relative orientation of the motion of the parton and the direction of the magnetic field in the medium.

Chirality reversal at finite magnetic impurity strength and local signatures of a topological phase transition

Here, we study the honeycomb lattice with a single magnetic impurity modeled by adding imaginary next-nearest-neighbor hopping 𝑖⁢ℎ on a single hexagon. This Haldane defect gives a topological mass term to the gapless Dirac cones and generates chirality. For a small density of defects, Neehus et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 135, 126604 (2025)] found that the system's chirality reverses at a critical ℎ 𝑐 ≈ 0.95 associated with an unexpected tricritical point of Dirac fermions at zero defect density. We investigate this zero-density limit by analyzing a single defect and computing two experimentally relevant measures of chirality: (1) orbital magnetization via local Chern marker, a bulk probe of all occupied states; and (2) electronic currents of low-energy states. Both probes show a chirality reversal at a critical ℎ 𝑐 ≈ 0.9–1.0. Motivated by this consistency, we propose a defect-scale toy model whose low-energy states reverse their chirality at ℎ$^{'}_{c}$ ≈ 0.87. Remarkably, the same pair of zero-energy bound states also generates the critical point ℎ 𝑐 in the full impurity projected T-matrix. Our results show how the chirality reversal produced by an impurity can be observed either in local probes or in the global topology, and suggest a possible role of the microscopic defect structure at the critical point.

Unveiling the Emergent Traits of Chiral Spin Textures in Magnetic Multilayers

Abstract Magnetic skyrmions are topologically wound nanoscale textures of spins whose ambient stability and electrical manipulation in multilayer films have led to an explosion of research activities. While past efforts focused predominantly on isolated skyrmions, recently ensembles of chiral spin textures, consisting of skyrmions and magnetic stripes, are shown to possess rich interactions with potential for device applications. However, several fundamental aspects of chiral spin texture phenomenology remain to be elucidated, including their domain wall (DW) structure, thermodynamic stability, and morphological transitions. Here the evolution of these textural characteristics are unveiled on a tunable multilayer platform—wherein chiral interactions governing spin texture energetics can be widely varied—using a combination of full‐field electron and soft X‐ray microscopies with numerical simulations. With increasing chiral interactions, the emergence of Néel helicity, followed by a marked reduction in domain compressibility, and finally a transformation in the skyrmion formation mechanism are demonstrated. Together with an analytical model, these experiments establish a comprehensive microscopic framework for investigating and tailoring chiral spin texture character in multilayer films.

Photoredox Catalysis with Spin Magnetic Field Effects: A Scheme for Chiral Resolution

Quantities that break both mirror symmetry and time-reversal symmetry, such as the orbital angular momentum, are known to connect molecular chirality with an applied magnetic field. This concept has led to observations such as magneto-chiral dichroism and chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS). However, being small, these effects often require additional amplification procedures such as flow chemistry to achieve bulk enantioseparation. In this work, we demonstrate how the magnetic field effect on photogenerated radical pairs, which also breaks time-reversal symmetry, can be harnessed for enantiopurification. Fundamental to this process is the collective decay of the singlet and triplet radical-pair states made possible by an applied magnetic field. Because opposite enantiomers exhibit spin-orbit coupling matrix elements of opposite signs, the singlet and triplet decay channels interfere constructively in one enantiomer. Meanwhile, molecules of the other enantiomer are funnelled into the first enantiomer through excited-state chirality inversion, achieving (dynamic kinetic) chiral resolution. Using an axially chiral binaphthyl derivative and a borane photosensitizer as prototype, we predict an appreciable enantiomeric excess (e.e.) of 90% to be possible at steady state, attained within hundreds of milliseconds when irradiated by a laser. Importantly, our analytical results showcase regimes of perfect enantioselectivity (100% e.e.), accessible by further chemical optimization of the photosensitizer for which general strategies are discussed. Altogether, this work illustrates a so-far untapped but powerful control knob for photoredox catalysis based on spin chemistry principles.

Neutron star kick velocity induced by neutrino chirality flip and a lower bound for the neutrino magnetic moment

We study the neutrino chirality flip during the birth of a neutron star, produced in a core made of strange quark matter. This mechanism is applied to the neutron star kick velocity problem and we show that it is efficient when the neutrino magnetic moment is not smaller than 4.7 × 10 −15 μ B , where μ B is the Bohr magneton. When this lower bound is combined with the most stringent upper bound, our results set a range for the neutrino magnetic moment given by 4.7 × 10 −15 ≤ μ ν / μ B ≤ (0.1 − 0.4) × 10 −11 . The obtained kick velocities for natal conditions are consistent with the observed ones and span the correct range of radii for typical magnetic field intensities.

Theory and phase-field simulations of electrical control of spin cycloids in a multiferroic

Cycloidal spin orders are common in multiferroics. One of the prototypical examples is BiFeO 3 (BFO) which shows a large polarization and a cycloidal antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at room temperature. Here, we employ Landau theory and phase-field simulations to analyze the coupled switching dynamics of polarization and cycloidal AFM orders in BFO. We identify 14 types of transitional spin structures between two cycloids and nine electric-field-induced spin switching paths. We demonstrate the electric-field-induced rotation of wave vectors of the cycloidal spins and discover two types of cycloidal spin switching dynamics: fast local spin flips and slow rotation of wave vectors. Also, we construct roadmaps to achieve the switching between any two spin cycloids through multistep applications of electric fields. Furthermore, this paper provides a theoretical framework for the phenomenological description of spin cycloids and a fundamental understanding of the switching mechanisms to achieve electrical control of magnetic orders.

Coexistence of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid and magnetic order in a spin-1 antiferromagnet

We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_\chi$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further unveil a stripe magnetic order coexisting with this spin liquid. Furthermore, our results not only establish a rare example of non-Abelian spin liquids in simple spin systems but also demonstrate the coexistence of fractionalized excitations and magnetic order beyond mean-field descriptions.

Lattice QED in an external magnetic field: Evidence for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking

We simulate quantum electrodynamics (QED) in a strong constant homogeneous external magnetic field on a Euclidean space-time lattice using the rational hybrid Monte Carlo method, developed for simulating lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Our primary goal is to measure the chiral condensate in the limit when the input electron mass m is zero. We observe a nonzero value, indicating that the external magnetic field catalyzes chiral symmetry breaking as predicted by approximate truncated Schwinger-Dyson methods. Such behavior is associated with dominance by the lowest Landau level which causes the effective dimensional reduction from 3 + 1 dimensions to 1 + 1 dimensions for charged particles (electrons and positrons) where the attractive forces of QED can produce chiral symmetry breaking with a dynamical electron mass and associated chiral condensate. Since our lattice simulations use bare (lattice) parameters, while the Schwinger-Dyson analyses work with renormalized quantities, direct numerical comparison will require renormalization of our lattice results. Insights into the Mechanism of Chiral‐Induced Spin Selectivity: The Effect of Magnetic Field Direction and Temperature

Chiral oligopeptide monolayers are adsorbed on a ferromagnetic surface and their magnetoresistance is measured as a function of the angle between the magnetization of the ferromagnet and the surface normal. These measurements are conducted as a function of temperature for both enantiomers. The angle dependence is found to follow a changing trend with a period of 360°. Quantum simulations reveal that the angular distribution can be obtained only if the monolayer has significant effective spin orbit coupling (SOC), that includes contribution from the vibrations. The model shows that SOC only in the leads cannot reproduce the observed angular dependence. The simulation can reproduce the experiments if it included electron–phonon interactions and dissipation.

Magnetic Control of Soft Chiral Phonons in PbTe

We report PbTe crystals have a soft transverse optical phonon mode in the terahertz frequency range, which is known to efficiently decay into heat-carrying acoustic phonons, resulting in anomalously low thermal conductivity. Here, we studied this phonon via polarization-dependent terahertz spectroscopy. We observed softening of this mode with decreasing temperature, indicative of incipient ferroelectricity, which we explain through a model including strong anharmonicity with a quartic displacement term. In magnetic fields up to 25 T, the phonon mode splits into two modes with opposite handedness, exhibiting circular dichroism. Their frequencies display Zeeman splitting together with an overall diamagnetic shift with increasing magnetic field. Using a group-theoretical approach, we demonstrate that these observations are the result of magnetic field-induced morphic changes in the crystal symmetries through the Lorentz force exerted on the lattice ions. Thus, our Letter reveals a novel process of controlling phonon properties in a soft ionic lattice by a strong magnetic field.

Chiral hydrodynamics in strong external magnetic fields

We construct the general hydrodynamic description of (3+1)-dimensional chiral charged (quantum) fluids subject to a strong external magnetic field with effective field theory methods. We determine the constitutive equations for the energy-momentum tensor and the axial charge current, in part from a generating functional. Furthermore, we derive the Kubo formulas which relate two-point functions of the energy-momentum tensor and charge current to 27 transport coefficients: 8 independent thermodynamic, 4 independent non-dissipative hydrodynamic, and 10 independent dissipative hydrodynamic transport coefficients. Five Onsager relations render 5 more transport coefficients dependent. We uncover four novel transport effects, which are encoded in what we call the shear-induced conductivity, the two expansion-induced longitudinal conductivities and the shear-induced Hall conductivity. Remarkably, the shear-induced Hall conductivity constitutes a novel non-dissipative transport effect. As a demonstration, we compute all transport coefficients explicitly in a strongly coupled quantum fluid via holography.
