Error control techniques for satellite and space communications

The performance of bandwidth efficient trellis inner codes using two-dimensional MPSK signal constellations in a NASA concatenated coding is summarized. Work was also continued on trellis coded modulation using multi-dimensional signal sets. Achievable lower bounds on free distance trellis codes were proved and the existence of good trellis coded modulation (TCM) schemes were established for a variety of signal constellations. The performance of TCM schemes on fading channels is being investigated. Preliminary results indicate that bandwidth efficient trellis coding is feasible on such channels, but that the important design parameter is no longer the minimum free Euclidean distance.

The Use of a Pseudo Noise Code for DIAL Lidar

Retrievals of CO2 profiles within the planetary boundary layer (PBL) are required to understand CO2 transport over regional scales and for validating the future space borne CO2 remote sensing instrument, such as the CO2 Laser Sounder, for the ASCENDS mission, We report the use of a return-to-zero (RZ) pseudo noise (PN) code modulation technique for making range resolved measurements of CO2 within the PBL using commercial, off-the-shelf, components. Conventional, range resolved, measurements require laser pulse widths that are s#rorter than the desired spatial resolution and have pulse spacing such that returns from only a single pulse are observed by the receiver at one time (for the PBL pulse separations must be greater than approximately 2000m). This imposes a serious limitation when using available fiber lasers because of the resulting low duty cycle (less than 0.001) and consequent low average laser output power. RZ PN code modulation enables a fiber laser to operate at much higher duty cycles (approaching 0.1) thereby more effectively utilizing the amplifier's output. This results in an increase in received counts by approximately two orders of magnitude. The approach involves employing two, back to back, CW fiber amplifiers seeded at the appropriate on and offline CO2 wavelengths (approximately 1572 nm) using distributed feedback diode lasers modulated by a PN code at rates significantly above 1 megahertz. An assessment of the technique, discussions of measurement precision and error sources as well as preliminary data will be presented.

The effects of channel errors in DPCM systems and comparison with PCM systems.

Sampling, quantization, and channel errors in differential pulse-code modulation (DPCM) systems are considered and compared to results obtained with standard pulse-code modulation (PCM) systems. DPCM and PCM are compared for three different reconstruction filters. The optimum prediction coefficient is shown to depend on the channel noise.-

Multiple Access Schemes for Lunar Missions

Two years ago, the NASA Coding, Modulation, and Link Protocol (CMLP) study was completed. The study, led by the authors of this paper, recommended codes, modulation schemes, and desired attributes of link protocols for all space communication links in NASA's future space architecture. Portions of the NASA CMLP team were reassembled to resolve one open issue: the use of multiple access (MA) communication from the lunar surface. The CMLP-MA team analyzed and simulated two candidate multiple access schemes that were identified in the original CMLP study: Code Division MA (CDMA) and Frequency Division MA (FDMA) based on a bandwidth-efficient Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM) with a superimposed Pseudo-Noise (PN) ranging signal (CPM/PN). This paper summarizes the results of the analysis and simulation of the CMLP-MA study and describes the final recommendations.

The design of trellis coded MPSK for fading channels: Performance criteria

It has been well established that the appropriate criterion for optimum trellis-coded modulation design on the additive white Gaussian noise channel is maximization of the free Euclidean distance. It is shown that when the trellis-coded modulation is used on a Rician fading channel with interleaving/deinterleaving, the design of the code of optimum performance is guided by other factors, in particular, the length of the shortest error-event path, and the product of branch distances (possibly normalized by the Euclidean distance of the path) along the path. Athough maximum free distance (dfree) is still an important consideration, it plays a less significant role the more severe the fading is on the channel. These considerations lead to the definition of a new distance measure of optimization of trellis codes transmitted over Rician fading channels. If no interleaving/deinterleaving is used, then once again the design of the trellis code is guided by maximizing dfree.

Development of AIFTDS-4000, a flight-qualified, flexible, high-speed data acquisition system

The NASA flight research center has developed a prototype data acquisition system which integrates an airborne computer with a high-speed pulse code modulation system. The design of the airborne integrated flight test data system (AIFTDS) is the result of experience with airborne pulse code modulation data systems. The AIFTDS-4000 has proved the premise on which it was designed: that the needs and requirements of data acquisition system users can be integrated to produce a highly flexible system that will be more useful than existing systems.

Method and apparatus for a single channel digital communications system

A method and apparatus are described for synchronizing a received PCM communications signal without requiring a separate synchronizing channel. The technique provides digital correlation of the received signal with a reference signal, first with its unmodulated subcarrier and then with a bit sync code modulated subcarrier, where the code sequence length is equal in duration to each data bit.

Modulation and coding for fast fading mobile satellite communication channels

The performance of Gaussian baseband filtered minimum shift keying (GMSK) using differential detection in fast Rician fading, with a novel treatment of the inherent intersymbol interference (ISI) leading to an exact solution is discussed. Trellis-coded differentially coded phase shift keying (DPSK) with a convolutional interleaver is considered. The channel is the Rician Channel with the line-of-sight component subject to a lognormal transformation.

Performance of the ICAO standard core service modulation and coding techniques

Aviation binary phase shift keying (A-BPSK) is described and simulated performance results are given that demonstrate robust performance in the presence of hardlimiting amplifiers. The performance of coherently-detected A-BPSK with rate 1/2 convolutional coding are given. The performance loss due to the Rician fading was shown to be less than 1 dB over the simulated range. A partially coherent detection scheme that does not require carrier phase recovery was described. This scheme exhibits similiar performance to coherent detection, at high bit error rates, while it is superior at lower bit error rates.

Digital Signal Processing Based Biotelemetry Receivers

This is an attempt to develop a biotelemetry receiver using digital signal processing technology and techniques. The receiver developed in this work is based on recovering signals that have been encoded using either Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) or Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) technique. A prototype has been developed using state-of-the-art digital signal processing technology. A Printed Circuit Board (PCB) is being developed based on the technique and technology described here. This board is intended to be used in the UCSF Fetal Monitoring system developed at NASA. The board is capable of handling a variety of PPM and PCM signals encoding signals such as ECG, temperature, and pressure. A signal processing program has also been developed to analyze the received ECG signal to determine heart rate. This system provides a base for using digital signal processing in biotelemetry receivers and other similar applications.

A Planar Approximation for the Least Reliable Bit Log-likelihood Ratio of 8-PSK Modulation

The optimum decoding of component codes in block coded modulation (BCM) schemes requires the use of the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) as the signal metric. An approximation to the LLR for the least reliable bit (LRB) in an 8-PSK modulation based on planar equations with fixed point arithmetic is developed that is both accurate and easily realizable for practical BCM schemes. Through an error power analysis and an example simulation it is shown that the approximation results in 0.06 dB in degradation over the exact expression at an E(sub s)/N(sub o) of 10 dB. It is also shown that the approximation can be realized in combinatorial logic using roughly 7300 transistors. This compares favorably to a look up table approach in typical systems.
