Multireference diffusion Monte Carlo reaches 2D materials
Abstract Quantum confinement in 2D materials strongly enhances electronic correlation effects. Therefore, predicting the properties of these unique materials, with both a high level of accuracy and computational efficiency, without relying on adjustable parameters or functionals, remains an outstanding theoretical challenge. The majority of theoretical studies are based on the approximations of density functional theory (DFT). The reliability of DFT predictions are heavily dependent on the choice of an approximated exchange-correlation functional. Here, we estimate the magnitude of impact of correlation on the total energy for the quintessential 2D material, graphene, by performing and comparing state-of-the-art selected CI and quantum Monte Carlo extrapolated calculations for a single unit cell at the$$\Gamma$$point. We demonstrate that Self-Healing Diffusion Monte Carlo (SHDMC) obtains a very compact, but high-quality wavefunction for this system that lacks the strong basis set dependence displayed by state of the art quantum chemistry methods. The SHDMC wavefunction is of higher quality compared to that obtained from sCI, in the same orbital basis, while being$$\sim$$ 1000 times smaller in terms of determinant count compared to sCI. We also demonstrate that extrapolating SHDMC results to the infinite determinant limit compares extremely well with complete basis set extrapolated sCI. Our work paves the way for future validation of SHDMC applied to challenging 2D materials.

Advancements in 2D MXene-based supercapacitor electrodes: synthesis, mechanisms, electronic structure engineering, flexible wearable energy storage for real-world applications, and future prospects
Supercapacitors are widely recognized as a favorable option for energy storage due to their higher power density compared to batteries, despite their lower energy density.
Computational discovery of a tetragonal MBene phase: diamond-shaped boron lattices, viable MAB precursors, and selective CO 2 reduction
MBenes are a class of two-dimensional transition-metal borides derived from layered MAB phases. Here, we use first-principles calculations to predict a new tetragonal MB (1 : 1) MBene phase featuring a diamond-shaped B–B lattice and systematically assess its phase stability, synthetic accessibility, and catalytic performance towards the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). Four tetragonal configurations are benchmarked against known hexagonal and orthorhombic phases, and a multi-tier screening identifies six robust members (CrB, FeB, MoB, WB, IrB, and PtB). Exploration of the I4/mmm MAB space reveals 11 viable precursors, including the experimentally synthesized Ir 2 ZnB 2 , which validates our screening approach. CO 2 RR free-energy diagrams show that CrB favors CH 3 OH while FeB, MoB, WB, IrB, and PtB preferentially yield HCOOH. The corresponding limiting potentials are competitive with, and in some cases superior to, those reported for state-of-the-art orthorhombic and hexagonal MBenes. These findings expand the MBene landscape by establishing a tetragonal phase with structural, synthetic, and catalytic promise.
Surface science insight note: Optimizing XPS instrument performance for quantification of spectra
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) provides quantitative information from photoemission peaks and shapes observed within the background due to the inelastic scattering of photoelectrons. To quantify the signal, both photoemission peaks and background in spectra must be adjusted for instrumental transmission variations that are a consequence of changes in efficiency when recording electrons with different kinetic energy. While it is generally assumed that correcting spectroscopic data for transmission is a necessary part of quantification by XPS, there are consequences for the quantification of spectra measured using an instrument for which transmission has significant curvature. In this Insight, the implications of curvature in transmission characteristics are discussed and a method based on XPS microscopy is proposed that ensures the transmission response of an instrument is free from significant curvature. An example of an instrument for which a flat transmission response is presented is achieved through collecting spectra using lens modes designed to measure stigmatic images.
The high-valent vanadium chemistry of isoindoline chelates
Isoindoline-based chelates, in particular bis(arylimino)isoindolines, have shown extensive metal binding chemistry. Although this chemistry has been explored for the middle and late transition metal ions, little work has been carried out on early transition metal complexes. In this article, we present the first examples of vanadium coordinated using four bis(arylimino)isoindolines, in which the aryl groups are pyrazole, indazole, benzimidazole, and pyridine (ligands 1–4 , respectively). We isolated five complexes using vanadyl sulfate or vanadyl acetylacetonate as the vanadium source. In all cases, the ligands bound in a meridional mode, and for four of the complexes, the vanadium ion was observed in the V(v) oxidation state. Three of the ligands ( 1–3 ) formed VO 2 complexes with vanadyl sulfate and vanadyl acetylacetonate, but the bis(pyridylimino)isoindoline (ligand 4 ) formed a V(v) oxosulfonato complex with the former starting material and a vanadyl V(iv) acetylacetonate with the latter starting material. All metal compounds were structurally elucidated by X-ray crystallographic methods, and we probed their electronic structures using DFT methods.

Shear and combustion characterization of printable ammonium perchlorate composite propellant formulations
Seven formulations of ammonium perchlorate composite propellant (APCP) are developed and their properties relevant for successful additive manufacture are characterized. Extrusion in a custom-built 3D printing system and spindle viscometry are used to collect viscosity measurements of curing primary and non-curing secondary versions of the formulations. The formulations that behave similarly to a Bingham plastic, with apparent viscosities between 4 and 8 thousand Pa*s at 30 minutes post-mix, are determined to be most suitable for printing applications. Measurements of one material show a yield stress of 1 kPa. Ambient pressure burn rates of 2.0–2.9 mm/s were measured for the compositions tested. All measured burn rates were comparable to the lower end of typical burn rates for APCP. In conclusion, the results of the characterization demonstrate a propellant suitable for use in a 3D printing system.
Elucidation of Design Criteria for V‐based Redox Mediators: Structure‐Function Relationships that Dictate Rates of Heterogeneous Electron Transfer
Redox mediators are attractive solutions for addressing the stringent kinetic stipulations required for efficient energy conversion processes. In this work, we compare the electrochemical properties of four vanadium complexes, namely [V(acac) 3 ], [V 6 O 7 (OMe) 12 ], [ n Bu 4 N] 3 [V 6 O 13 (TRIS NO2 ) 2 ], and [ n Bu 4 N] 5 [V 18 O 46 (NO 3 )] in non-aqueous solutions on glassy carbon electrodes. The goal of this study is to investigate the electron transfer kinetics and diffusivity of these compounds under identical experimental conditions to develop an understanding of structure-function relationships that dictate the physicochemical properties of vanadium oxide assemblies. Complex selection was dictated by two criteria – (1) nuclearity of the transition metal complexes (2) distribution of electron density in the native electronic configuration. In conclusion, our analyses establish that electronic communication between metal centers significantly impacts charge transfer kinetics of these vanadium-based compounds.
