Consequences of a lifetime greater than 10 to the 7th power years for galactic cosmic rays

The implications of recent determinations of the cosmic-ray lifetime are discussed. It is concluded that the observations are consistent with a 'dynamical halo' model in which cosmic rays are confined in an outward-moving galactic halo by self-generated hydromagnetic waves. Alternative models which do not incorporate a halo, but which have the cosmic rays propagate in regions of reduced density in the galactic disk, are also briefly discussed.

Speculations on the consequences to biology of space shuttle-associated increases in global UV-B radiation

Various aspects of the impact of ozone depletion on the biosphere are assessed and discussed. Speculations on the factors which determine the extent and nature of biological damage due to an increased flux of ultra violet light are presented. It is concluded that a complete assessment must consider both direct effects (organisms) as well as indirect effects (ecosystems). The role of computer simulation of ecosystem models as a predictive tool is examined.

Consequences of using nonlinear particle trajectories to compute spatial diffusion coefficients

In a study of cosmic ray propagation in interstellar and interplanetary space, a perturbed orbit resonant scattering theory for pitch angle diffusion in a slab model of magnetostatic turbulence is slightly generalized and used to compute the diffusion coefficient for spatial propagation parallel to the mean magnetic field. This diffusion coefficient has been useful for describing the solar modulation of the galactic cosmic rays, and for explaining the diffusive phase in solar flares in which the initial anisotropy of the particle distribution decays to isotropy.

Some consequences of solar wind induction in the moon

A review is given of empirical and theoretical research into lunar induction excited by the solar wind. Transfer functions are discussed along with the bulk electrical-conductivity profile for the moon, limits on resolution and uniqueness, and comparisons of various conductivity models. Estimates of the lunar internal temperature profile are examined, sources for permanent magnetization of lunar rocks are considered, and the extreme frequency limit for detection of a lunar core is assessed. It is noted that there is no convincing evidence for a metallized lunar core with a radius of 500 km or larger.

Departures of the electron energy distribution from a Maxwellian in hydrogen. I - Formulation and solution of the electron kinetic equation. II - Consequences

The problem of calculating the steady-state free-electron energy distribution in a hydrogen gas is considered in order to study departures of that distribution from a Maxwellian at sufficiently low degrees of ionization. A model kinetic equation is formulated and solved analytically for the one-particle electron distribution function in a steady-state partially ionized hydrogen gas, and it is shown that the formal solution can be accurately approximated by using the WKB method. The solutions obtained indicate that the high-energy tail of the distribution is susceptible to distortion by imbalanced inelastic collisions for ionization fractions not exceeding about 0.1 and that such departures from a Maxwellian can lead to significant changes in the collisional excitation and ionization rates of ground-state hydrogen atoms. Expressions for the electron-hydrogen collision rates are derived which explicitly display their dependence on the hydrogen departure coefficients. The results are applied in order to compare self-consistent predictions with those based on the a priori assumption of a Maxwellian distribution for models of the thermal ionization equilibrium of hydrogen in the optically thin limit, spectral-line formation by a gas consisting of two-level atoms, and radiative transfer in finite slabs by a gas of four-level hydrogen atoms.

Consequences and inferences from tidal interactions in the solar system

A general theory of the rotation of solid bodies in the solar system leads to the following conclusions: No special initial conditions on the primordial rotation states of most tidally evolved bodies are necessary to account for their present rotation. The possible exception is the rotation of Venus, which must have been initially retrograde unless a liquid core-solid mantle interaction or an accelerating atmospheric tide could dominate the ordinary gravitational tides. Tides eventually drive all bodies in precessing orbits to 'Cassini states', where the spin vector, normal to the orbit and normal to the invariable plane remain coplanar as the first two precess about the latter. The constant obliquity in this configuration, together with the lowest order gravitational harmonics and the amplitude of the physical libration allows the determination of the central condensation and the extent of a liquid-core for Mercury. Criteria for the existence of observable amplitudes of the free wobble, free precession and libration of the moon are established which do not exclude current, non-zero values.

Image restoration consequences of the lack of a two variable fundamental theorem of algebra

It has been shown that, at least for one pair of otherwise attractive spaces of images and operators, singular convolution operators do not necessarily have nonsingular neighbors. This result is a nuisance in image restoration. It is suggested that this difficulty might be overcome if the following three conditions are satisfied: (1) a weaker constraint than absolute summability can be identified for useful operators: (2) if the z-transform of an operator has at most a finite number of zeros on the unit torus, then the inverse z-transform formula yields an inverse operator meeting the weaker constraint: and (3) operators whose z-transforms are zero in a set of real, closed curves on the unit torus have neighbors which are zero in only a finite set of points on the unit torus.

The interior structure of Jupiter (Consequences of Pioneer 10 data)

Models of the Jovian interiors based on theoretical equations of state of hydrogen and helium supported by a few experimental points and on observed parameters such as oblateness, gravitational coefficients, heat emission, magnetic fields, are discussed. The models fall into three categories: (1) those that assume a uniform and rather low H2/He ratio throughout the planet; (2) those in which this ratio is solar and thus higher; and (3) those that take into account the lack of complete miscibility of the two elements in the condensed state. It appears now also that within the limits of error the planet is in a hydrostatic equilibrium. The large heat emission and the need for an efficient source of internal heat are confirmed, but the results do not indicate which one of the various possible mechanisms is favored, although new evolutionary models suggest that the primordial heat may be insufficient. A new red spot has been discovered. Finally, the presence of a highly eccentric and inclined magnetic field poses new problems related to the pattern of internal convection and to the possibility of a north-south asymmetry of the interior. Further analysis of the available data may throw additional light on these questions.

Economic consequences of improved temperature forecasts: An experiment with the Florida citrus growers (control group results)

A demonstration experiment is being planned to show that frost and freeze prediction improvements are possible utilizing timely Synchronous Meteorological Satellite temperature measurements and that this information can affect Florida citrus grower operations and decisions. An economic experiment was carried out which will monitor citrus growers' decisions, actions, costs and losses, and meteorological forecasts and actual weather events and will establish the economic benefits of improved temperature forecasts. A summary is given of the economic experiment, the results obtained to date, and the work which still remains to be done. Specifically, the experiment design is described in detail as are the developed data collection methodology and procedures, sampling plan, data reduction techniques, cost and loss models, establishment of frost severity measures, data obtained from citrus growers, National Weather Service, and Federal Crop Insurance Corp., resulting protection costs and crop losses for the control group sample, extrapolation of results of control group to the Florida citrus industry and the method for normalization of these results to a normal or average frost season so that results may be compared with anticipated similar results from test group measurements.

Economic consequences of improved temperature forecasts: An experiment with the Florida citrus growers (control group results). Executive summary

A demonstration experiment is being planned to show that frost and freeze prediction improvements are possible utilizing timely Synchronous Meteorological Satellite temperature measurements and that this information can affect Florida citrus grower operations and decisions so as to significantly reduce the cost for frost and freeze protection and crop losses. The design and implementation of the first phase of an economic experiment which will monitor citrus growers decisions, actions, costs and losses, and meteorological forecasts and actual weather events was carried out. The economic experiment was designed to measure the change in annual protection costs and crop losses which are the direct result of improved temperature forecasts. To estimate the benefits that may result from improved temperature forecasting capability, control and test groups were established with effective separation being accomplished temporally. The control group, utilizing current forecasting capability, was observed during the 1976-77 frost season and the results are reported. A brief overview is given of the economic experiment, the results obtained to date, and the work which still remains to be done.

Consequences of narrow cyclotron emission from Hercules X-1

The implications of the recent observations of a narrow cyclotron line in the hard X-ray spectrum of Hercules X-1 are studied. A Monte Carlo code is used to simulate the X-ray transfer of an intrinsically narrow feature at approximately 56 keV through an opaque, cold magnetospheric shell. The results of this study indicate that if a narrow line can be emitted by the source region, then only about 10% of the photons remain in a narrow feature after scattering through the shell. The remaining photons are scattered into a broad feature (FWHM approximately 30 keV) that peaks near 20 keV. Thus, these calculations indicate that the intrinsic source luminosity of the cyclotron line is at least an order of magnitude greater than the observed luminosity.

Some astrophysical consequences of the existence of a heavy stable neutral lepton

It is suggested that a stable, massive, neutral lepton may dominate the present mass density in the universe. To investigate this assumption, attention is given to an analysis of extended gauge theories as they apply to a lepton with a mass of a few GeV/sq cm. A critical factor in the accuracy of the hypothesis is the actual mass of the lepton, and it is noted that the more massive the individual particle, the smaller the particle's aggregate contribution to the universal mass density. High energy accelerators could prove a useful tool in an empirical determination of the lepton's mass. It is further suggested that the lepton considered might provide the material in galactic halos, or supply the mass necessary to bind galactic clusters. A study of intergalactic annihilation radiation is expected to yield more data pertaining to the lepton's existence.

Consequences of narrow cyclotron emission from Hercules X-1

Explanations of the line feature in the hard X-ray (58 keV) spectrum of the compact X-ray source Hercules X-1 are presented. The most important characteristic of the emission (interpreted as a cyclotron emission from a strong magnetic field, i.e., B greater than one trillion Gauss) is that the FWHM is less than 12 keV, with a total observed luminosity in the line of approximately 1% of the total X-ray luminosity. If the source region is only at the magnetic poles of a neutron star, the electrons are confined to a path nearly parallel to the B-field lines, and the angle of emission will be narrow. Photon emission under such circumstances is also discussed; and it is suggested that photons can leave either through holes in the shell formed by the hard X-rays, or can escape through the shell itself. Attention is given to the accretion flow structure near the magnetopause, as a critical parameter of narrow line emission.

Volcanism and soil mercury on Mars - Consequences for terrestrial microorganisms

An earth-Mars depletion formula proposed by Anders and Owen for volatiles is used to calculate a range of putative Hg levels for Martian volcanic soils based upon analyzed samples from Hawaii. The range is about 50-150 microgram per kg. When applied either in conventional or special media (e.g., basalt powder), these levels of Hg are effective inhibitors of the growth of earth microorganisms. Taken together with other hostile chemical and physical factors, volcanic toxicants would appear to provide a further deterrent to the accidental establishment of terrestrial microbiota on Mars.

Mercurian global tectonics - A consequence of tidal despinning

The surface of Mercury exhibits a global tectonic system consisting of an ancient set of NE and NW tending lineaments and a younger set of planimetrically arcuate escarpments interpreted as thrust of high-angle reverse faults. The trends, distribution, and age relations of these tectonic features can be explained by a combination of tidal despinning and global contraction of the planet. In our model, early tidal despinning resulted in conjugate shear fractures trending roughly N60 deg E and N60 deg W which were subsequently modified by a variety of surface processes to produce the presently visible set of lineaments. Continued despinning plus global contraction produced thrust faults with roughly north-south trends. Final contraction may have postdated despinning and produced randomly oriented thrust faults. All of these events predated the formation of Caloris basin, because basin-associated deposits blanket both lineaments and arcuate thrust faults.

Origin and evolution of the Saturn system: Observational consequences

A number of important cosmogonic questions concerning the Saturn system can be addressed with a Saturn-orbiter-dual-probe spacecraft mission. These questions include: The origin of the Saturn system; the source of Saturn's excess luminosity; the mechanism by which the irregular satellites were captured; the influence of Saturn's early luminosity on the composition of its regular satellites; and the origin of the rings. The first two topics can be studied by measurements made from an entry probe into Saturn's atmosphere, while the remaining issues can be investigated by measurements conducted from an orbiter. Background information is provided on these five questions describing the critical experiments needed to help resolve them.
