RADAI: A Large-Scale Realistic Dataset for Radiation Detection Algorithm Development

Open, realistic datasets are essential for developing and benchmarking radiation detection algorithms, yet they remain scarce. The Radiological Anomaly Detection and Identification (RADAI) project was develop to create datasets that meet the training and testing needs for sophisticated radiation detection algorithms. The RADAI dataset is a large-scale synthetic resource that integrates high-fidelity Monte Carlo simulations with realistic urban scenarios to capture both background variability and source signatures. RADAI models construction-material NORM, people and vehicles, urban clutter, and dynamic environmental effects such as cosmic-ray and rain-induced transients, and they provide list-mode detector data with motion and response modeling suitable for algorithm training and evaluation. The RADAI project resulted in three publicly-released complementary datasets together with an online scoring portal for standardized performance assessment and an open software toolkit that supports data access, augmentation, model development, and evaluation. These resources enable reproducible comparisons across methods and promote rigorous studies at the scale required by contemporary machine learning. By grounding algorithm development in realistic, well-documented conditions, RADAI supports progress toward more robust detection, identification, and localization in complex urban environments.

MeV-scale Physics in MicroBooNE

The scope of this public note is to present preliminary measurements of MeV energy signatures and relevant backgrounds for beam neutrino interactions using a dedicated reconstruction technique, expanding upon the original study by ArgoNeuT. We also use this technique to identify and quantitatively analyze the low energy activity emanating from the field cage support ribs in the MicroBooNE detector and discuss how the usage of similar construction materials could be a source of background for low energy physics analyses in future neutrino detectors such as the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). We also highlight the application of the low energy reconstruction technique to studies of neutrino interactions from core-collapse supernovae and muons decaying at rest ($\mu$DAR).

The Effect of Flow on CO2 Corrosion of Self-Healing Metallic Coatings

Internal corrosion is an issue that affects natural gas pipelines, a significant part of the United States’ energy infrastructure. Over time, this corrosion has worn away longstanding pipelines due to the original construction materials used for the lines and impurities in the gas and liquid streams flowing through them. The main impurities in natural gas are H2O, CO2, H2S, and O2. One of the leading causes of corrosion is the CO2 dissolved in water, giving rise to carbonic acid formation, which can further dissolve the steel pipe. The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has been studying different solutions to this problem. One potential answer is a self-healing sacrificial metallic coating applied by a novel cold spray technique. This study explored the impact of flow on corrosion with this coating and carbon steel when exposed to a saturated CO2 environment by simulating the pipeline flow profile in a small-scale lab setting. The samples were evaluated using multiple electrochemical techniques that found corrosion rates and were backed up with surface analysis to conclude the behavior of the corrosion mechanisms. The cold spray coating exhibited steel corrosion protection under flow conditions. This study has significantly advanced our understanding of CO2 corrosion, particularly in the context of natural gas pipelines and coating design.

Developing a Prototype Methodology to Rank CO2-EOR Wells and Assess Their Reuse Potential for Geologic Carbon Sequestration

This study presents a prototype methodology for evaluating the reuse potential of Class II CO₂-enhanced oil recovery (CO₂-EOR) wells as Class VI wells for geologic carbon sequestration. The approach focuses on assessing wellbore construction materials—casing, cement, tubing, and packers—based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Class VI well conversion guidelines. Utilizing Python scripts and JSON representations, the methodology automates checks on digitized Texas Railroad Commission (TRRC) data to rank wells based on regulatory and integrity criteria. Key factors include casing integrity, cementing techniques, tubing compatibility, and packer selection. Due to limitations in digitized data, manual verification is required for certain sections. Future enhancements include incorporating non-digitized data via web scraping and machine learning. This research provides a practical framework for well owners and regulators, supporting informed decision-making for sustainable CO₂ storage.

Cementless Concrete: Advancing Alkali-Activated Slag Composites with Black Liquor

This project explores the use of black liquor, a byproduct of sustainable aviation fuel production, as an alkaline activator for industrial byproducts such as steel slags to produce alkali-activated composites (AACs). The resulting cementless concrete cures at ambient temperature, demonstrates comparable performance to conventional cement, and offers a safer, lower-energy alternative for durable construction materials.
