Legacy Survey of Space and Time Data Preview 2: SSSource searchable catalog

We present Rubin Data Preview 2 (DP2), the second data preview from the NDF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory. Data Preview 2 (DP2) comprises coadds, detection catalogs, and ancillary data products; and when fully released will also include single-epoch images and difference images. DP2 is derived from observations acquired by the LSST Science Camera (LSSTCam) on the Simonyi Survey Telescope at the Summit Facility on Cerro Pachón, Chile, primarily during the on-sky commissioning campaign between 2025-04-16 and 2025-09-21, supplemented by observations taken between 2025-10-25 and 2026-01-06 that overlap the commissioning footprint. The DP2 footprint comprises the Science Validation wide-area survey, five Deep Drilling Fields, and a number of targeted small-field regions, including Trifid and Lagoon, Prawn, M49, and New Horizons, all observed as part of the Rubin First Look campaign. Each field was imaged in up to six broad photometric bands, ugrizy, and coadded to produce deep imaging covering an estimated 3,000 deg2. The addition of single-visit-only areas expands the total DP2 footprint to an estimated 15,000 deg2, with coverage in at least one filter. The median per-visit PSF FWHM across the wide-area survey ranges from 1.17 arcsec in the z band to 1.26 arcsec in g and r bands. The deepest field, reaches estimated coadded 5σ depths of u=26 mag, g=26.8 mag, r=26.3 mag, i=26.1 mag, z=25.3 mag, y=23.9 mag. Based on a roughly five-month primary observing baseline and covering only part of the eventual LSST footprint, DP2's area, depth, and multiband coverage nonetheless support a broad range of early science investigations ahead of LSST Data Release This dataset is a subset of the full data release consisting of a searchable catalog named SSSource. This catalog contains instantaneous physical parameters for moving objects at the time of every observation. This catalog contains 8,136,150 rows with 39 columns.

Big Data and AI at DoE's Legacy Sites - 20546

More than 30 years have passed since DOE started the decommissioning of nuclear weapon complexes and the clean-up of soil and groundwater. All the sites have been collecting and archiving soil and groundwater monitoring datasets; particularly contaminant concentration time-series. These datasets provide unparalleled opportunities to understand the system behavior (including more fundamental hydrological and geochemical processes, the response to various perturbations, the long-term trend and environmental decay rate towards the regulatory limit). This understanding is critical for providing multiple lines of evidences that can support site closure. In this study, we explore the machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) applications to the long-term soil and groundwater management at DoE's legacy sites. ML can improve our understanding of the subsurface systems, which is critical for long-term monitoring and management of the sites, while AI can automate or support some of decision-making processes (e.g., anomaly detection, monitoring well placements). The particular focuses are to develop general algorithms to: (1) to identify distinct spatiotemporal patterns and to identify several groups that have similar temporal behaviors, using unsupervised clustering methods, (2) identify the different temporal scales of hydrological responses to climate perturbations by time-series analysis, and (3) reduce the number of monitoring wells by identifying the minimum sufficient number of wells to capture the heterogeneity of the groundwater contaminant plume and concentration distribution, using the Gaussian Process model. We demonstrate our methodology at the Savannah River Site F-Area. (authors)

Determining fast-S and slow-S propagation directions with SV-P data produced by buried explosives and recorded with vertical geophones

We have evaluated the concept of practicing S-wave reflection seismology with legacy 3D seismic data generated by a P-wave source and recorded with only vertical geophones. This type of S-wave imaging is based on the principle that seismic P-wave sources not only produce a downgoing illuminating P wavefield, but they also simultaneously produce a downgoing illuminating SV wavefield that, in almost all cases, is suitable for S-wave reflection imaging. The S-mode used in this study is the SV-P, or converted-P, mode. This mode involves a downgoing illuminating SV wavefield and an upgoing reflected P-mode that is recorded by vertical geophones. In flat-layered stratigraphy, the lengths of the SV and P raypaths in SV-P imaging are identical to the lengths of the SV and P raypaths in P-SV imaging with P-sources and 3C geophones. P-SV imaging of deep rocks has been practiced for more than two decades; SV-P imaging is a new concept. SV-P data should provide the same options for investigating deep rocks as do P-SV data. We have determined one of the equivalences between SV-P data extracted from vertical-geophone data and P-SV data extracted from horizontal geophones: that both modes react to azimuth-dependent variations in the S velocity in anisotropic rocks. Azimuthal variations in the SV-P traveltime can be used to define the polarization direction of the fast-S-wave mode, which is also the azimuth of the maximum horizontal stress (SHmax). Our investigation demonstrates a noninvasive method for monitoring changes in the SHmax azimuth across a CO 2 storage reservoir, or any targeted porous rock, as fluids are cycled into, and then out of, that rock’s pore space.

Hawthorne Nevada Deep Direct-Use Feasibility Study - Data Used for Geothermal Resource Conceptual Modeling and Power Capacity Estimates

This data submission includes several data components that were used to develop a conceptual model and power capacity-estimates of two low-temperature geothermal resources that define geothermal prospect A at Hawthorne, Nevada. Data are sourced from a combination of legacy publicly-available data and more recent data acquisition conducted by the US Navy Geothermal Program Office (2008-2013) and the Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy at the University of Nevada, Reno (2008-2010). Data sets include compiled fluid geochemistry data, down-hole temperature logs for wells in the vicinity of prospect A, 2 meter temperature survey data, temperature-spinner logs acquired in well HWAAD-2A, fracture picks from image log data acquired in wells HWAAD-2 and HWAAD-3, and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses on cuttings from wells HWAAD-2A and HWAAD-3. These data have been reviewed for errors and inconsistencies, but it is possible that few errors could still remain. The resource conceptual model and power capacity estimates are included in the final report to the US Department of Energy, and are presented in a manuscript by Ayling and Hinz. A link to the manuscript published in Geothermics is linked below in this submission.

Galaxy clustering in the DESI Legacy Survey and its imprint on the CMB

ABSTRACT We use data from the DESI Legacy Survey imaging to probe the galaxy density field in tomographic slices covering the redshift range 0 < z < 0.8. After careful consideration of completeness corrections and galactic cuts, we obtain a sample of 4.9 × 107 galaxies covering 17 739 deg2. We derive photometric redshifts with precision σz/(1 + z) = 0.012−0.015, and compare with alternative estimates.1 Cross-correlation of the tomographic galaxy maps with Planck maps of cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and lensing convergence probe the growth of structure since z = 0.8. The signals are compared with a fiducial Planck ΛCDM model, and require an overall scaling in amplitude of Aκ = 0.901 ± 0.026 for the lensing cross-correlation and AISW = 0.984 ± 0.349 for the temperature cross-correlation, interpreted as the integrated Sachs–Wolfe effect. The ISW amplitude is consistent with the fiducial Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) prediction, but lies significantly below the prediction of the AvERA model of Rácz et al., which has been proposed as an alternative explanation for cosmic acceleration. Within ΛCDM, our low amplitude for the lensing cross-correlation requires a reduction either in fluctuation normalization or in matter density compared to the Planck results, so that $\Omega _\mathrm{ m}^{0.78}\sigma _8=0.297\pm 0.009$. In combination with the total amplitude of CMB lensing, this favours a shift mainly in density: Ωm = 0.274 ± 0.024. We discuss the consistency of this figure with alternative evidence. A conservative compromise between lensing and primary CMB constraints would require Ωm = 0.296 ± 0.006, where the 95 per cent confidence regions of both probes overlap.

We present a new method to search for strong gravitational-lensing systems by pairing spectra that are close together on the sky in a spectroscopic survey. We visually inspect 26,621 spectra in the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Data Release 1 that are selected in this way. We further inspect the 11,848 images corresponding to these spectra in the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys Data Release 10, and obtain 2046 conventional strong gravitational lens candidates, of which 1906 are new. This constitutes the largest sample of lens candidates identified to date in spectroscopic data. Besides the conventional candidates, we identify a new class of systems that we term “dimple lenses.” These systems have a low-mass foreground galaxy as a lens, typically smaller in angular extent and fainter compared with the lensed background source galaxy, producing subtle surface brightness indentations in the latter. We report the discovery of 318 of these “dimple lens” candidates. We suspect that these represent dwarf galaxy lensing. With follow-up observations, they could offer a new avenue to test the cold dark matter model by probing their mass profiles, stellar mass–halo mass relation, and halo mass function for M Halo ≲ 10 13 M ⊙ . Thus, in total, we report 2164 new lens candidates. Our method demonstrates the power of pairwise spectroscopic analysis and provides a pathway complementary to imaging-based and single-spectrum lens searches.
