Low-resistivity homogeneous elastomers

Mixture of polyurethane polyelectrolyte and soluble, conducting organic compound produces homogeneous elastomer which has resistivity several orders of magnitude less than polyelectrolyte alone. Elastomeric material has novel resistivity dependence on temperature, that is, resistivity changes dramatically over narrow temperature range in vicinity of glass transition temperature.

A molecular theory of elastomer deformation and rupture.

The mechanical properties of elastomers, including rupture and its time dependence, can be semiquantitatively predicted from nine molecular parameters which are characteristic for a given species, from the initial molecular weight of a sample before cross-linking and from the effective chain concentration (which must still be determined for each vulcanizate). Only two empirical quantities are involved - the Plazek retardation function for entanglement slippage and a related constant which serves to locate this function on the time scale. The theory leads to a new method of estimating fatigue lifetimes from short-time data.

Ammonia-compatible elastomers and alloys

Study examines and reports positive findings from suitability tests of metal alloys, Inconel 718 and Ti-6A1-4V and elastomers, Ethylene propylene terpolymer rubbers, for utilization in storage vessels, fluid lines, and other system components subjected to continuous immersion in liquid anhydrous ammonia.

Relative toxicity of pyrolysis products of some elastomers

Ten samples comprising seven generic types of elastomers were evaluated for relative toxicity using the USF/NASA toxicity screening test method. The nitrile rubber samples appeared to generally exhibit greater toxicity than the samples of polyisoprene, styrene butadiene, and chlorinated polyethylene rubber. Carbon monoxide was present in sufficient concentration in the blood of the test animals to be the principal cause of death in the case of polyisoprene and styrene butadiene rubber.

Low-temperature elastomer production and curing

Thermally and chemically stable polymers are needed for materials applications, particularly highly-stable elastomers for solid propellant binders where initial high temperature required for dissolving anhydride in polymer is deerimental. Solvent reactant system allows polymerization without condensation of products under low heat. Solvents utilized were dimethylacetamide, dimethyflormamide, etc.

Equilibrium swelling of elastomers in solvents

Two proposed empirical equations, developed from Eilers-VanDijk equation to characterize relative modulus of filled elastomers as function of filler content, describe: (1) equilibrium swelling for cases where fillers are composed of permanent aggregates of primary particles; and (2) equilibrium swelling when filler material is composed of non-aggregated particles.

Analysis of the tensile stress-strain behavior of elastomers at constant strain rates. I - Criteria for separability of the time and strain effects

A theoretical analysis of the tensile stress-strain relation of elastomers at constant strain rate is presented which shows that the time and the stress effect are separable if the experimental time scale coincides with a segment of the relaxation modulus that can be described by a single power law. It is also shown that time-strain separability is valid if the strain function is linearly proportional to the Cauchy strain, and that when time-strain separability holds, two strain-dependent quantities can be obtained experimentally. In the case where time and strain effect are not separable, superposition can be achieved only by using temperature and strain-dependent shift factors.

Rapid solution casting under vacuum of very thick sheets of a segmented polyurethane elastomer

A technique has been developed for rapidly casting from solution under vacuum smooth, bubble-free, clear-white and uniformly thick (about 0.20 cm) sheets of a segmented polyurethane elastomer. The casting is carried out from dimethylformamide solutions inside temperature-controlled air-circulated ovens in order to minimize the establishment of thermal gradients throughout the casting solution. The technique produces quality sheets in 9 days, compared with 40-45 days for an inferior film produced in open pans.

Hydrazine-Compatible Elastomer

Hydrazine hardly reacts with ethylene propylene diene monomer, even at high temperatures. According to report to tests, EPDM is most hydrazine-compatible material among elastomers. Has strong potential as valve-seat and O-ring seal with hydrazine, especially at high temperatures.

Elastomer-Modified Polyimides

New resins yield laminates with improved mechanical properties. Ingredients of Modified Polymer include bisimide of formula 1 and amine-terminated elastomer. Cure effected by heating to temperature suited to particular ingredients used, generally in range of 200 degrees to 300 degrees C. Solution of solvent and reactants used for fabricating fiber-reinforced structures or as adhesive.

Elastomer toughened polyimide adhesives

A rubber-toughened addition-type polyimide composition is disclosed which has excellent high temperature bonding characteristics in the fully cured state, and improved peel strength and adhesive fracture resistance physical property characteristics. The process for making the improved adhesive involves preparing the rubber containing amic acid prepolymer by chemically reacting an amine-terminated elastomer and an aromatic diamine with an aromatic dianhydride with which a reactive chain stopper anhydride was mixed, and utilizing solvent or mixture of solvents for the reaction.

Process for preparing perfluorotriazine elastomers and precursors thereof

Perfluoroether triazine elastomers having improved properties and utility in seals, gaskets, sealing components and the like are prepared from oligomeric imidoylamidines that have, in turn, been prepared by the process of (1) reacting a perfluorodinitrile with liquid ammonia to yield a perfluorodiamidine, (2) isolating the perfluorodiamidine, (3) reacting the isolated diamidine with a perfluorodinitrile to yield a perfluoror(imidoylamidine) dinitrile, and then repeating step (1), (2), and (3) to sequentially grow an oligomer of desired molecular size. The isolated amidine and nitrile intermediates are also described.

Modification of epoxy-reinforced glass-cloth composites with a perfluorinated alkyl ether elastomer

A perfluorinated alkyl ether diacyl fluoride prepolymer (molecular weight about 1500) was coreacted with Epon 828 epoxy resin and diamino diphenyl sulfone to obtain an elastomer-toughened, glass-cloth composite. Improvements in flexural toughness, impact resistance, and water resistance, without loss of strength, modulus of elasticity or a lowering of the glass-transition temperature, were realized over those of the unmodified composite. Factors concerning optimization of the process are discussed. Results suggest that a simultaneously interpenetrating polymer network may be formed which gives rise to a measured improvement in composite mechanical properties.
