Shear Stress Sensing using Elastomer Micropillar Arrays

The measurement of shear stress developed as a fluid moves around a solid body is difficult to measure. Stresses at the fluid-solid interface are very small and the nature of the fluid flow is easily disturbed by introducing sensor components to the interface. To address these challenges, an array of direct and indirect techniques have been investigated with various advantages and challenges. Hot wire sensors and other indirect sensors all protrude significantly into the fluid flow. Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices, although facilitating very accurate measurements, are not durable, are prone to contamination, and are difficult to implement into existing model geometries. One promising approach is the use of engineered surfaces that interact with fluid flow in a detectable manner. To this end, standard lithographic techniques have been utilized to generate elastomeric micropillar arrays of various lengths and diameters. Micropillars of controlled length and width were generated in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer using a soft-lithography technique. The 3D mold for micropillar replication was fabricated using laser ablative micromachining and contact lithography. Micropillar dimensions and mechanical properties were characterized and compared to shear sensing requirements. The results of this characterization as well as shear stress detection techniques will be discussed.

Sensitivity evaluation of mounting optics using elastomer and bipod flexures

A sensitivity evaluation of mounting 100mm optics using elastomer or bipod flexures was completed to determine the relative effects of geometry, structure, material, thermal and vibration environment as they relate to optical distortion. This paper covers both opto-mechanical designs, as well as analytical results from computer modeling and brassboard tests.

Thermal Insulative Elastomers for Clustered Large Liquid Propellant Rocket Engines

As thrust levels increase and as rocket engines fire for longer periods of time, the difficulties encountered in the protection of critical components from the effects of excessively high temperatures greatly increase. To protect these components a series of filled elastomeric composites have been evaluated. A brief discussion is presented of the problems of hot gas recirculation, radiation, and base plane heating with particular reference to large, clustered, liquid propellant rocket engines. The effect on components is discussed and an evaluation of a series of insulators based on filled elastomeric composites is presented. The evaluations are based on specialized thermal tests which were designed to simulate as far as possible, conditions during flight. The most promising of these elastomeric composites are compared to three alternative insulative systems, a filled, castable ceramic, a metal foil-silica fiber batting, and an asbestos-inconel wire mesh composite, in terms of weight, cost, and ease of fabrication and repair.

Evaluation of elastomers as gasket materials in pneumatic and hydraulic systems

In the search for superior materials from which to make gaskets for pneumatic and hydraulic systems, promising materials were selected and tested. The testing was conducted in two phases. Those materials that passed the tests of Phase 1 were tested in Phase 2, and categorized in the order of preference.

Prediction of the mechanical properties of a filled elastomer in vacuum

Constant force creep measurements were made at three stress levels on samples of an ammonium perchlorate filled butadiene-acrylic acid copolymer in vacuum and in the atmosphere (air, 50% relative humidity) at a temperature of 28 C. The creep compliance of the samples decreased as much as 50% after 14 days of vacuum exposure. Shift factors were developed which, when applied to the atmospheric compliance measurements, predicted the behavior in vacuum. The experimental results led to the following conclusions: (1) shift factors can be applied to predict compliance behavior in vacuum from measurements in air, and (2) the shift factors are independent of stress but increase in magnitude with increasing vacuum exposure.
