Plasma research in electric propulsion at Colorado State University

The effect of electron bombardment ion thruster magnetic field configurations on the uniformity of the plasma density and the ion beam current density are discussed. The optimum configuration is a right circular cylinder which has significant fields at its outer radii and one end but is nearly field free within the cylinder and at the extraction grid end. The production and loss of the doubly charged ions which effect sputtering damage within thrusters are modeled and the model is verified for the mercury propellant case. Electron bombardment of singly charged ions is found to be the dominant double ion production mechanism. The low density plasma (approx. one million elec/cubic centimeter which exists in the region outside of the beam of thrust producing ions which are drawn from the discharge chamber is discussed. This plasma is modeled by assuming the ions contained in it are generated by a charge exchange process in the ion beam itself. The theoretical predictions of this model are shown to agree with experimental measurements.

α Irradiation Response on the Electronic Transport Properties of p -B 12 P 2

B 12 P 2 , a wide bandgap semiconductor, has been previously reported to self-heal from high-energy electron bombardment as determined from transmission electron microscopy. However, the effect of irradiation on the electronic transport properties of B 12 P 2 has not been studied. We report electrical transport measurements on B 12 P 2 after α irradiation. The temperature-dependent Hall effect was measured on p-type B 12 P 2 after successive α irradiation from 210 Po over a fluence range of 1 × 10 11 –1 × 10 13 α/cm 2 to test for self-healing of B 12 P 2 to α bombardment. Prior to irradiation, B 12 P 2 displayed electrical transport characteristics of both hopping and impurity/defect band conduction due to background impurities and growth-induced defects. Fluences of 5 × 10 12 α/cm 2 or greater caused a decrease in the hole mobility and an increase in defect band conduction, suggesting defect accumulation in B 12 P 2 .

Core level excitation of simple gases

The ionization of simple gases by electron bombardment exhibits distinct resonances at electron energies slightly below the core level binding energies of the atomic constituents of the gas. A vacancy in an inner shell of the atom may recombine by a radiationless Auger process, thus leaving the molecule in a singly or higher ionized state. These ions are easily collected and the threshold resonances for excitation are evident in the second derivative of the ion yield plotted as a function of the energy of the electron beam. By using a mixture of gases, such as CO and CO2, it is possible to measure relative chemical shifts of the C and O 1s thresholds. In this case the C 1s threshold is 3.9 eV lower in CO than in CO2, and the O 1s threshold is 2.7 eV lower in CO than in CO2. The feasibility of constructing a simple analyzer based on this technique will be discussed to supplement conventional mass spectrometer analysis of gas composition.

Ion-thruster propellant utilization.

Maximum propellant utilization in a mercury electron-bombardment thrustor is evaluated. The primary-electron region in the ion chamber of a bombardment thrustor is analyzed at maximum utilization. Both the analysis and experimental data from a range of ion-chamber configurations show a nearly constant loss rate for un-ionized propellant at maximum utilization over a wide range of total propellant flow rate. The discharge loss level of 1000 eV/ion was used to define maximum utilization. The exact level of this definition has no effect on the qualitative results and little effect on the quantitative results. The results obtained are particularly significant whenever efficient throttled operation is required.

Effect of Thrustor Arcing on Ion Rocket System Design

Arcing between the electrodes of an ion rocket thrustor is investigated for the effect it will have on the overall design of ion rocket systems. The effect of generator, transformer, and inserted impedances on system stability and efficiency, and on operating lifetime of thrustor components are considered. Rate of arcing, preferential arc paths, speed of arc interruption, and response of thrustors to voltage transients are also discussed. The study indicates that arcing is a system hazard and that arcing rates are of prime importance in the design and development of thrustors, thrustor arrays, and system components. Two system models for reducing the hazard are proposed, based on principles developed herein, published data, and experience available from operation of nine-module electron-bombardment thrustor array. Experimental investigation of these models is presently underway.
