Advanced-Research-on-Integrated-Energy-Systems-Based Analysis to Support Resilient System Upgrades: Energy to Communities Energyshed In-Depth Partnership with Molokai, Hawaii

The Molokai, Hawaii, Energy to Communities (E2C) Energyshed project represents a collaborative effort between the National Laboratory of the Rockies, Shake Energy Collaborative, the Molokai Clean Energy Hui, Sustainable Molokai, and Ho'ahu Energy Cooperative Molokai to advance Molokai's Community Energy Resilience Action Plan (CERAP). Supported by Hawaiian Electric Company and the Hawaii State Energy Office, the initiative aims to develop a community-defined portfolio of renewable energy solutions that enhance energy resilience while aligning with the Hawaiian Electric Integrated Grid Plan (IGP) and Molokai's energy goals. Phase 1 focused on technical analyses and community engagement to co-design feasible energy scenarios. Challenges such as grid upgrades, storage sizing, and inverter ride-through standards were addressed to align technical and operational requirements with community preferences. The project equips Molokai with actionable data and insights to implement energy initiatives while ensuring resilient and culturally informed solutions. Future efforts aim to finalize project designs, secure interconnection agreements, and deploy energy projects that reflect community priorities and technical feasibility.

Commercial and Industrial Energy Procurement in Nigeria: A Consumer's Guidebook

Across Africa, countries have incorporated a variety of new energy sources into their energy mix to account for increasing demand. In Nigeria, electricity consumption per capita has grown nearly 50% in the past 20 years. To address rising demand for energy in Nigeria, the country has passed several recent policies and regulations aimed at increasing energy generation across the country, improving the country's transmission infrastructure, and ensuring that electricity reliably reaches end users, including commercial and industrial (C&I) customers. This guidebook is designed for C&I customers in Nigeria to use in the consideration of procuring such onsite, captive energy systems to supplement their energy needs. Each section of this guidebook touches on a step of the procurement process and details the relevant stakeholders, processes, and data needed to make decisions during that step.

Vehicle Technologies Program: Energy Storage R&D (2008 Annual Progress Report)

One of the primary objectives of the Energy Storage effort is the development of durable and affordable advanced batteries (and ultracapacitors) for use in a full range of vehicle applications, from start/stop to full-power HEVs, EVs, and PHEVs. The battery technology development activity spans three areas: system development of full battery systems; benchmark testing of emerging technologies in order to remain abreast of the latest industry developments; and Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) to fund early-stage R&D for small businesses/entrepreneurs.

A Novel Low-Profile High-Efficiency Three-Phase Matrix Transformer

High step-down isolated DC-DC conversion from an 800 V DC bus to low-voltage, high-current outputs is required in automotive auxiliary converters and data center power supplies. In such applications, conventional transformer-based converters require large turns ratios, which increase winding resistance, leakage inductance, and magnetic height. This paper proposes a novel low-profile three-phase matrix transformer that realizes a large effective voltage ratio through flux division among multiple secondary legs, without increasing the physical turns count of each winding. As a result, the proposed structure reduces copper usage and transformer height while preserving the voltage conversion capability of a conventional three-phase transformer. Finite element analysis shows that the proposed design reduces magnetic height by 27%, ferrite volume by 34%, and copper volume by 28%. Circuit-level simulations of an 800 V/12 V,3 kW CLLLC dual-active-bridge converter further show that the lower winding resistance reduces total system loss by 91% and increases DC-DC efficiency from 82.6% to 97.6% at 3 kW output.

Building Operation Model (Morpheus) for Dallas Fort Worth Airport (CRADA CRD-19-16301 Final Report)

The primary objective of this project was to leverage digital twin technology to enhance the design and operation of DFW Airport terminals and their associated energy systems. To achieve this, Morpheus, a building digital twin, was developed to guide improvements in airport operations, specifically targeting reductions in peak power demand and overall energy consumption.

Recommendations for Establishing Local Rural Electrification Programs Using Photovoltaic Systems [Recomendaciones Para la Implantacidn de Programas Locales de Electrificacidn Rural con Sistemas Fotovoltaicos]

Photovoltaic (PV) technology is becoming one the best options for supplying electricity to rural communities far from electrical networks and which have a small and disperse demand for electricity. As the cost of the technology goes down and its development advances, opportunities for applying it continue to grow. As a result, in the near future we will probably see an increase in massive application programs of this technology in rural Mexico. This document presents some of the most relevant problems needing immediate solution to increase the possibility of success in establishing photovoltaic programs for rural electrification in Mexico. These problems are influenced by economic, technological, engineering, infrastructural, social and political issues. The paper presents the requirements for an industrial center based on PV technology, the accessibility of replacement parts and maintenance service, development of financial solutions, training of the users and introducing norms and technical regulations. The document summarizes the issue of rural electrification in Mexico, emphasizing the low population density in these areas. A brief description is given of photovoltaics showing different configurations that can be utilized for supplying electricity to the rural areas. The issues involved and recommendations for introducing PV systems to the rural area are described.

Weak, shallow, dry convection over Angola increases offshore stratocumulus cloud droplet number concentrations

Boundary-layer cloud interactions involving shortwave-absorbing aerosols remain one of the least understood aerosol influences on climate. Here, we find the highest stratocumulus cloud droplet number concentrations over the southeast Atlantic occur when agricultural fires coincide with synoptically-weakened surface warming over Angola, occurring June-early August. Dry convection fills a shallow continental boundary layer with smoke, and a nighttime (local solar time 2-9) land breeze transports the aerosol into the marine boundary layer. Offshore aerosol transport is strengthened by low-level easterlies from a continental pressure high southeast of Angola. Simultaneously, the South Atlantic subtropical high is weaker, allowing extensive dispersal of aerosol offshore into the boundary layer, obscuring cloud brightening from shipping. Meteorological co-variation at synoptic scales compensates for cloud brightening by the smoke. Outgoing shortwave radiation increases by 15–20% of the monthly mean in June and July when offshore droplet numbers are less but the stratocumulus deck is more developed.
