Electronic and optical properties of plutonium metal and oxides from Reflection Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy

Reflection Electron Energy Loss Spectra (REELS) have been acquired on plutonium δ-Pu-Ga alloys, α-Pu 2 O 3 and PuO 2 . The position of the peaks attributable to the Pu 6p excitation can be used as ‘fingerprint’ for these species. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy has been used to aid interpretation of the REELS spectra. The band gap of PuO 2 was determined from the onset of the energy loss in the REELS spectrum. The REELS data have been evaluated within the dielectric response theory by means of the QUEELS-ε(k, w)-REELS software. In this work, the Energy Loss Function, dielectric function, refractive index and extinction coefficient for these materials have been determined in the ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet range and are compared to previously reported results.

Correlation of optical properties with particle size, morphology, and polymorph of fine- and nano-particle formulations of titanium dioxide powders

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) particulates are known to exhibit different visible and infrared optical properties compared to the bulk material, showing strong dependence on particle size, crystal structure, and morphology. In this study, the optical properties, sizes, and morphologies of TiO 2 particles from two different sources (nano and fine powders) having a) nominally different particle sizes and b) various crystal polymorph mixture fractions are compared using a combination of single particle mass spectrometry, optical spectroscopies, and aerosol characterization methods. The nano sample was found to be largely particles of the anatase polymorph (88% by mass), while the fine sample was found to consist largely of rutile particles (95% by mass). Two distinct particle morphologies (fractal and compact) were found in each powder sample and could be identified and separated in-situ based on particle aerodynamic properties. The attenuation of near-infrared, visible and ultraviolet light by TiO 2 particles shows strong dependence on particle morphology. Furthermore, while the fine particles were found to have larger near-infrared (675–800 nm) extinction coefficients by mass than the nanoparticles, the reverse was true in the ultraviolet and visible regions (370–675 nm). However, for polydisperse particles with different sizes and shapes, the optical behaviors are not straightforward to directly correlate to a combination of physical parameters.

Quantification of active sites in yttrium containing dealuminated Beta zeolites during conversion of ethanol and acetaldehyde to butadiene

Here, in this work, yttrium containing dealuminated Beta zeolites (Y/deAlBeta) were synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques to improve understanding of ethanol upgrading over these materials. Characterization results indicate yttrium atoms partially condense with framework silanol nests formed during dealumination of parent Al-Beta supports. Active sites for conversion of ethanol and acetaldehyde to butadiene were quantified on a series of Y/deAlBeta catalysts (0.1–10 wt% yttrium) via ex situ chemisorption and transmission Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy measurements by first measuring the integrated molar extinction coefficient (IMEC) for pyridine bound to Lewis acidic yttrium sites. In situ titrations with pyridine demonstrate that the number of sites quantified by ex situ chemisorption IR is quantitatively similar to the number of sites that catalyze butadiene formation, which varies (from 0.05 to 0.35) across the series of catalysts. In situ pyridine titrations impact butadiene site time yields (STY), but not crotonaldehyde STY, indicating that a distribution of yttrium sites is present, and that discrete yttrium site types participate in distinct steps in the pathway from ethanol to butadiene. Apparent kinetic parameters including activation energies and reaction orders were measured, these suggest differences in reactant (or reactant-derived intermediate) surface coverages result in higher STYs (per mol Y or per Lewis acidic Y site) for samples with low Y loadings relative to those with higher Y loadings. Isotopic labeling experiments evince the existence of other kinetically relevant steps in addition to the crotonaldehyde transformation to crotyl alcohol. Together, these findings provide further guidance into the heterogeneities in site structures in yttrium-containing zeolites and their relevance for the various steps in the pathway from ethanol to C 4 products useful for production of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable butadiene.

Mechanistic Understanding and Rational Design of Quantum Dot/Mediator Interfaces for Efficient Photon Upconversion

The semiconductor-nanocrystal-sensitized, three-component upconversion system has made great strides over the past 5 years. The three components (i.e., triplet photosensitizer, mediator, and emitter) each play critical roles in determining the input and output photon energy and overall quantum efficiency (QE). The nanocrystal photosensitizer converts the absorbed photon into singlet excitons and then triplet excitons via intersystem crossing. The mediator accepts the triplet exciton via either direct Dexter-type triplet energy transfer (TET) or sequential charge transfer (CT) while extending the exciton lifetime. Through a second triplet energy-transfer step from the mediator to the emitter, the latter is populated in its lowest excited triplet state. Triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) between two triplet emitters generates the emitter in its bright singlet state, which then emits the upconverted photon. Quantum dots (QD) have a tunable band gap, large extinction coefficient, and small singlet–triplet energy losses compared to metal–ligand charge-transfer complexes. This high triplet exciton yield makes QDs good candidates for photosensitizers. In terms of driving triplet energy transfer, the triplet energy of the mediator should be slightly lower than the triplet exciton energy of the QD sensitizer for a downhill energy landscape with minimal energy loss. The same energy cascade is also required for the transfer from the mediator to the emitter. Lastly, the triplet energy of the emitter must be slightly larger than one-half of its singlet energy to ensure that TTA is exothermic. Optimization of the sensitizer, mediator, and emitter will lead to an increase in the anti-Stokes shift and the total quantum efficiency. Evaluating each individual step’s efficiency and kinetics is necessary for the understanding of the limiting factors in existing systems.

Excited-State Dynamics and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Hyperpolarizable Chromophores Based on Conjugated Bis(terpyridyl)Ru(II) and Palladium and Platinum Porphyrinic Components: Impact of Heavy Metals upon Supermolecular Electro-Optic Properties

A new series of strongly coupled oscillators based upon (porphinato)Pd, (porphinato)Pt, and bis(terpyridyl)-ruthenium(II) building blocks is described. These RuPPd, RuPPt, RuPPdRu, and RuPPtRu chromophores feature bis- (terpyridyl)Ru(II) moieties connected to the (porphinato)metal unit via an ethyne linker that bridges the 4!-terpyridyl and porphyrin macrocycle meso-carbon positions. Pump–probe transient optical data demonstrate sub-picosecond excited singlet-to-triplet-state relaxation. The relaxed lowest-energy triplet (T 1 ) excited states of these chromophores feature absorption manifolds that span the 800–1200 nm spectral region, microsecond triplet-state lifetimes, and large absorptive extinction coefficients [ε(T 1 → T n ) > 4 × 10 4 M –1 cm –1 ]. Dynamic hyperpolarizability (β λ ) values were determined from hyper-Rayleigh light scattering (HRS) measurements carried out at several incident irradiation wavelengths over the 800–1500 nm spectral region. Relative to benchmark RuPZn and RuPZnRu chromophores which showed large βHRS values over the 1200–1600 nm range, RuPPd, RuPPt, RuPPdRu, and RuPPtRu displayed large βHRS values over the 850–1200 nm region. Generalized Thomas–Kuhn sum (TKS) rules and experimental hyperpolarizability values were utilized to determine excited state-to-excited state transition dipole terms from experimental electronic absorption data and thus assessed frequency-dependent β λ values, including two- and three-level contributions for both β zzz and β xzx tensor components to the RuPPd, RuPPt, RuPPdRu, and RuPPtRu hyperpolarizability spectra. Furthermore, these analyses qualitatively rationalize how the βzzz and βxzx tensor elements influence the observed irradiation wavelength-dependent hyperpolarizability magnitudes. The TKS analysis suggests that supermolecules related to RuPPd, RuPPt, RuPPdRu, and RuPPtRu will likely feature intricate dependences of experimentally determined βHRS values as a function of irradiation wavelength that derive from substantial singlet–triplet mixing, and complex interactions among multiple different β tensor components that modulate the long wavelength regime of the nonlinear optical response.

High-Temperature Reaction Kinetics of the e aq – and HO 2 • Radicals with Iron(II) Ions in Aqueous Solutions

Pulsed electron radiolysis was used to determine the chemical reaction kinetics and Arrhenius parameters for iron(II) reactions in aqueous solutions under irradiation. The second-order Fe 2+ reactions with the hydrated electron (e aq – ) and the perhydroxyl radical (HO 2 • ), arising from water radiolysis, were measured to high temperatures using custom-built flow-through cells with a multichannel optical detection system. The reaction with the HO 2 • radical was found to proceed via the formation of a metal-ion adduct species, Fe 2+ –HO 2 • . Additionally, the adduct’s molar extinction coefficient and its first-order decay rate coefficients are reported.

Homomolecular Triplet–Triplet Annihilation in Metalloporphyrin Photosensitizers

Metalloporphyrins are ubiquitous in their applications as triplet photosensitizers, particularly for promoting sensitized photochemical upconversion processes. In this study, bimolecular excited state triplet–triplet quenching kinetics, termed homomolecular triplet–triplet annihilation (HTTA), exhibited by the traditional triplet photosensitizers–zinc(II) tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP), palladium(II) octaethylporphyrin (PdOEP), platinum(II) octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP), and platinum(II) tetraphenyltetrabenzoporphyrin (PtTPBP)–were revealed using conventional transient absorption spectroscopy. Nickel(II) tetraphenylporphyrin was used as a control sample as it is known to be rapidly quenched intramolecularly through ligand-field state deactivation and, therefore, cannot result in triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA). The single wavelength transients associated with the metalloporphyrin triplet excited state decay–measured as a function of incident laser pulse energy in toluene–were well modeled using parallel first- and second-order kinetics, consistent with HTTA being operable. The combined transient kinetic data enabled the determination of the first-order rate constants (k T ) for excited triplet decay in ZnTPP (4.0 × 10 3 s –1 ), PdOEP (3.6 × 10 3 s –1 ), PtOEP (1.2 × 10 4 s –1 ), and PtTPBP (2.1 × 10 4 s –1 ) as well as the second-order rate constant (k TT ) for HTTA in ZnTPP (5.5 × 10 9 M –1 s –1 ), PdOEP (1.1 × 10 10 M –1 s –1 ), PtOEP (7.1 × 10 9 M –1 s –1 ), and PtTPBP (1.6 × 10 10 M –1 s –1 ). In most instances, triplet excited state extinction coefficients are either reported for the first time or have been revised using ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy and singlet depletion: ZnTPP (78,000 M –1 cm –1 ) at 470 nm, PdOEP (67,000 M –1 cm –1 ) at 430 nm, PtOEP (51,000 M –1 cm –1 ) at 418 nm, and PtTPBP (100,000 M –1 cm –1 ) at 460 nm. Furthermore, the combined experimental results establish competitive time scales for homo- and heteromolecular TTA rate constants, implying the significance of considering HTTA processes in future research endeavors harnessing TTA photochemistry using common metalloporphyrin photosensitizers.

Visible-Light-Driven Triplet Sensitization of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Using Thionated Perinones

Metal-free chromophores that efficiently generate triplet excited states represent enticing alternatives with respect to transition metal-containing photosensitizers, such as those featuring metal-to-ligand charge transfer excited states. Yet, such molecular constructs have remained underexplored due to the unclear relationship(s) between molecular structure and efficient/rapid intersystem crossing. In this regard, we present a series of three thionated perinone chromophores serving as a newly conceived class of heavy metal-free triplet photosensitizers. We demonstrate that thionation of the lone C=O substituent in each highly fluorescent perinone imparts red-shifted absorbance bands that maintain intense extinction coefficients across the visible spectrum, as well as unusually efficient triplet excited state formation as inferred from the measured singlet O 2 quantum yields at 1270 nm (Φ Δ = 0.78–1.0). Electronic structure calculations revealed the emergence of a low energy S 1 (n → π*) excited state in the proximity of a slightly higher energy S 2 (π → π*) excited state. The distinct character in each of the two lowest-lying singlet state manifolds resulted in the energetic inversion of the corresponding triplet excited states due to differences in electron exchange interactions. Rapid S 1 → T 1 intersystem crossing was thereby facilitated in this manner through spin–orbit coupling as predicted by the El Sayed rules. The lifetimes of the resultant triplet excited states persisted into the microsecond time regime, as measured by transient absorbance spectroscopy, enabling effective bimolecular triplet sensitization of some common polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The synthetically facile interchange of a single O atom to an S atom in the investigated perinones resulted in marked changes to their photophysical properties, namely, conversion of dominant singlet state fluorescence in the former to long-lived triplet excited states in the latter. The combined results suggest a general strategy for accessing long-lived triplet excited states in organic chromophores featuring a lone C=O moiety residing within its structure, valuable for the design of metal-free triplet photosensitizers.

Quantitative Mid-infrared Photoluminescence Characterization of Black Phosphorus–Arsenic Alloys

Black phosphorus (bP) is a promising material for mid-infrared (mid-IR) optoelectronic applications, exhibiting high performance light emission and detection. Alloying bP with arsenic extends its operation toward longer wavelengths from 3.7 μm (bP) to 5 μm (bP 3 As 7 ), which is of great practical interest. Quantitative optical characterizations are performed to establish black phosphorus-arsenic (bPAs) alloys optoelectronic quality. Anisotropic optical constants (refractive index, extinction coefficient, and absorption coefficient) of bPAs alloys from near-infrared to mid-IR (0.2-0.9 eV) are extracted with reflection measurements, which helps optical device design. Quantitative photoluminescence (PL) of bPAs alloys with different As concentrations are measured from room temperature to 77 K. PL quantum yield measurements reveal a 2 orders of magnitude decrease in radiative efficiency with increasing As concentration. An optical cavity is designed for bP 3 As 7 , which allows for up to an order of magnitude enhancement in the quantum yield due to the Purcell effect. In conclusion, our comprehensive optical characterization provides the foundation for high performance mid-IR optical device design using bPAs alloys.

Pyrocumulonimbus Events Over British Columbia in 2017: An Ensemble Model Study of Parameter Sensitivities and Climate Impacts of Wildfire Smoke in the Stratosphere

Abstract The Pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb) events over British Columbia in 2017 were observed in the lower stratosphere for about 8–10 months after the smoke injections. Several previous studies used global climate models to investigate the physical parameters for the 2017 pyroCb events, but the conclusions show strong model dependency. In this study, we use the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) and complete an ensemble of runs exploring three injection parameters: smoke aerosol mass, the percentage of black carbon within the smoke aerosols, and plume injection height. Additionally, we consider the heterogeneous reaction of ozone and primary organic matter. According to the satellite daily observed aerosol optical depth (AOD), we find that the best ensemble member is the simulation with 0.4 Tg of smoke, 3% of which is black carbon, a 13.5 km smoke injection height, and a 10 −5 probability factor of the heterogeneous reaction. Besides AOD, we examine the ensemble score based on the metrics used in previous studies: the metrics of the extinction coefficient at 18 km altitude and the maximum plume height. The conclusion of the best estimate of the injection parameters for 2017 pyroCb events shows strong not only model but also evaluation metric dependency. We use the Random Forest machine learning technique to quantify the relative importance of each parameter in accurately simulating the 2017 pyroCb events and find that the injection height is the most critical feature, no matter which metric is used to score the ensemble members.

Tantalum pentoxide: a new material platform for high-performance dielectric metasurface optics in the ultraviolet and visible region

Dielectric metasurfaces, composed of planar arrays of subwavelength dielectric structures that collectively mimic the operation of conventional bulk optical elements, have revolutionized the field of optics by their potential in constructing high-efficiency and multi-functional optoelectronic systems on chip. The performance of a dielectric metasurface is largely determined by its constituent material, which is highly desired to have a high refractive index, low optical loss and wide bandgap, and at the same time, be fabrication friendly. Here, we present a new material platform based on tantalum pentoxide (Ta 2 O 5 ) for implementing high-performance dielectric metasurface optics over the ultraviolet and visible spectral region. This wide-bandgap dielectric, exhibiting a high refractive index exceeding 2.1 and negligible extinction coefficient across a broad spectrum, can be easily deposited over large areas with good quality using straightforward physical vapor deposition, and patterned into high-aspect-ratio subwavelength nanostructures through commonly-available fluorine-gas-based reactive ion etching. We implement a series of high-efficiency ultraviolet and visible metasurfaces with representative light-field modulation functionalities including polarization-independent high-numerical-aperture lensing, spin-selective hologram projection, and vivid structural color generation, and the devices exhibit operational efficiencies up to 80%. Our work overcomes limitations faced by scalability of commonly-employed metasurface dielectrics and their operation into the visible and ultraviolet spectral range, and provides a novel route towards realization of high-performance, robust and foundry-manufacturable metasurface optics.

Coherent heteroepitaxial growth of I-III-VI 2 Ag(In,Ga)S 2 colloidal nanocrystals with near-unity quantum yield for use in luminescent solar concentrators

Colloidal Ag(In,Ga)S 2 nanocrystals (AIGS NCs) with the band gap tunability by their size and composition within visible range have garnered surging interest. High absorption cross-section and narrow emission linewidth of AIGS NCs make them ideally suited to address the challenges of Cd-free NCs in wide-ranging photonic applications. However, AIGS NCs have shown relatively underwhelming photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) to date, primarily because coherent heteroepitaxy has not been realized. Here, we report the heteroepitaxy for AIGS-AgGaS 2 (AIGS-AGS) core-shell NCs bearing near-unity PL QYs in almost full visible range (460 to 620 nm) and enhanced photochemical stability. Key to the successful growth of AIGS-AGS NCs is the use of the Ag-S-Ga(OA) 2 complex, which complements the reactivities among cations for both homogeneous AIGS cores in various compositions and uniform AGS shell growth. The heteroepitaxy between AIGS and AGS results in the Type I heterojunction that effectively confines charge carriers within the emissive core without optically active interfacial defects. AIGS-AGS NCs show higher extinction coefficient and narrower spectral linewidth compared to state-of-the-art heavy metal-free NCs, prompting their immediate use in practicable applications including displays and luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs).

Compositional dependence of linear and nonlinear optical response in crystalline hafnium zirconium oxide thin films

Composition dependence of second harmonic generation, refractive index, extinction coefficient, and optical bandgap in 20 nm thick crystalline Hf 1– x Zr x O 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) thin films is reported here. The refractive index exhibits a general increase with increasing ZrO 2 content with all values within the range of 1.98–2.14 from 880 nm to 400 nm wavelengths. A composition dependence of the indirect optical bandgap is observed, decreasing from 5.81 eV for HfO 2 to 5.17 eV for Hf 0.4 Zr 0.6 O 2 . The bandgap increases for compositions with x > 0.6, reaching 5.31 eV for Hf 0.1 Zr 0.9 O 2 . Second harmonic signals are measured for 880 nm incident light. The magnitude of the second harmonic signal scales with the magnitude of the remanant polarization in the composition series. Film compositions that display near zero remanent polarizations exhibit minimal second harmonic generation while those with maximum remanent polarization also display the largest second harmonic signal. The results are discussed in the context of ferroelectric phase assemblage in the hafnium zirconium oxide films and demonstrate a path toward a silicon-compatible integrated nonlinear optical material.

Evidence of excited-state lifetime enhancement in dimyristoyl-phosphocholine nanodiscs by ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy

Ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy is an analytical tool that is commonly utilized to determine protein concentrations, primarily due to characteristic absorption of tryptophan and tyrosine at 280 nm. Accurate concentration determination is essential to the accuracy of many biophysical techniques, and ultraviolet absorption provides a convenient and rapid method to assess protein concentration. However, the widespread usage of this method assumes that ultraviolet absorption is the same for individual amino acids in aqueous solution (where the molar extinction coefficient was measured) as for the amino acid in the conformational environment of the protein of interest. We demonstrate that additional considerations may be necessary for the membrane scaffold protein in dimyristoyl-phosphocholine nanodiscs through ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy of nanodiscs, liposomes, the membrane scaffold protein, and a mixture of liposomes and the non-nanodisc-associated protein. The aromatic amino acids of the membrane scaffold protein absorb significantly less light at 280 nm when associated with lipids in a lipoprotein assembly, which we plausibly attribute to an enhancement of chromophore excited-state lifetimes due to reduced intramolecular motion in the nanodisc. We caution that using the molar absorptivity of the membrane scaffold protein alone to determine nanodisc concentrations may not yield accurate results. Instead, the molar absorptivity of each nanodisc formulation should be explored independently to account for the unique conformational environment of each nanodisc.

Effect of a redox-mediating ligand shell on photocatalysis by CdS quantum dots

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are efficient organic photoredox catalysts due to their high extinction coefficients and easily tunable band edge potentials. Despite the majority of the surface being covered by ligands, our understanding of the effect of the ligand shell on organic photocatalysis is limited to steric effects. We hypothesize that we can increase the activity of QD photocatalysts by designing a ligand shell with targeted electronic properties, namely, redox-mediating ligands. Herein, we functionalize our QDs with hole-mediating ferrocene (Fc) derivative ligands and perform a reaction where the slow step is hole transfer from QD to substrate. Surprisingly, we find that a hole-shuttling Fc inhibits catalysis, but confers much greater stability to the catalyst by preventing a build-up of destructive holes. We also find that dynamically bound Fc ligands can promote catalysis by surface exchange and creation of a more permeable ligand shell. Finally, we find that trapping the electron on a ligand dramatically increases the rate of reaction. Furthermore, these results have major implications for understanding the rate-limiting processes for charge transfer from QDs and the role of the ligand shell in modulating it.

Characterisations of the HinOTORI telescope with a three-color imager at Ali Observatory in Western Tibet

HinOTORI is a new telescope supported by an international collaboration project between China and Japan. It is a 50 centimeter telescope equipped with simultaneous three-color imagers (u',R C , and I C bands). It is located at Ali Observatory at an altitude of 5100m. Thanks to the high altitude and extreme dryness, Ali site is one of the most suitable sites for optical astrometry. HinOTORI telescope aims at detecting optical transients such as the counterparts of gravitational wave (GW) sources, supernovae, gamma-ray bursts (GRB) and so on. This paper describes the site information, design of simultaneous three-color optical layout, system instruments and whole control system. We also report some telescope characterisations for three bands (u'/R C /I C ) respectively, such as Hartmann constant (0.49"/0.56"/0.60"), best focus position (3.922/3.920/3.903 mm), PSF FWHM size (3.755/3.328/3.167pixels), total transmittance and limiting magnitude (15.69/17.57/17.05mag, 10 σ 30 seconds exposure time). With different airmass observation data, the atmospheric extinction coefficients of three bands (0.366/0.061/0.026) were also derived.

New insights on the nebular emission, ionizing radiation, and low metallicity of Green Peas from advanced modelling

ABSTRACT Low-metallicity, compact starburst galaxies referred to as Green Peas (GPs) provide a unique window to study galactic evolution across cosmic epochs. In this work, we present new deep optical spectra for three GPs from OSIRIS at the 10-m Gran Telescopio Canarias, which are studied using a state-of-the-art methodology. A stellar population synthesis is conducted with 1098 spectral templates. The methodology succeeds at characterizing stellar populations from 0.5 Myr to 10 Gyr. The light distribution shows a large red excess from a single population with ${log}\left({age}\right) \gt 8.5\, \mathrm{yr}$ in the GP sample analysed. This points towards an incomplete characterization of the gas luminosity, whose continuum already accounts between 7.4 and $27.6{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ in the galaxy sample. The emission spectra are fitted with the largest Bayesian chemical model consisting of an electron temperature, an electron density, the logarithmic extinction coefficient and eleven ionic species under the direct method paradigm. Additionally, building on previous work, we propose a neural networks sampler to constrain the effective temperature and ionization parameter of each source from photoionization model grids. Finally, we combine both methodologies into a 16-dimensional model, which for the first time, simultaneously explores the direct method and photoionization parameter spaces. Both techniques consistently indicate a low-metallicity gas, $7.76\lt 12+{\rm log}\left(O/H \right)\lt 8.04$, ionized by strong radiation fields, in agreement with previous works.

Gas-phase metallicity determinations in nearby AGNs with SDSS-IV MaNGA: evidence of metal-poor accretion

ABSTRACT We derive the metallicity (traced by the O/H abundance) of the narrow-line region (NLR) of 108 Seyfert galaxies as well as radial metallicity gradients along their galaxy discs and of these of a matched control sample of no active galaxies. In view of that, observational data from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey and strong emission-line calibrations taken from the literature were considered. The metallicity obtained for the NLRs was compared to the value derived from the extrapolation of the radial oxygen abundance gradient, obtained from H ii region estimates along the galaxy disc, to the central part of the host galaxies. We find that, for most of the objects ($\sim 80\, {{\ \rm per\ cent}}$), the NLR metallicity is lower than the extrapolated value, with the average difference ($\langle$D$\rangle$) between these estimates ranging from 0.16 to 0.30 dex. We suggest that $\langle$D$\rangle$ is due to the accretion of metal-poor gas to the AGN that feeds the nuclear supermassive black hole (SMBH), which is drawn from a reservoir molecular and/or neutral hydrogen around the SMBH. Additionally, we look for correlations between D and the electron density (Ne), [O iii]λ5007, and H α luminosities, extinction coefficient (AV) of the NLRs, as well as the stellar mass (M*) of the host galaxies. Evidence of an inverse correlation between the D and the parameters Ne, M*, and Av was found.
