Land change, fire, and climate weaken carbon sink in the conterminous United States

The land carbon sink of the conterminous United States was evaluated using a bottom-up modeling framework and 30-meter land change data from 1985 to 2020. This cross-scale, cross-landscape, and cross-system approach tracked fractional land cover changes and applied regional model calibration. Results show average terrestrial and aquatic carbon sinks of +110 ± 37 and +19 ± 0.5 teragrams of carbon per year, respectively. The terrestrial carbon sink, showing no clear trend, peaked in the 1990s, with more years as a carbon source since 2000, contradicting recent national and global studies. Land change had the largest impact (−70 ± 5.5 teragrams of carbon per year), exceeding impacts of climate (−33 ± 48 teragrams of carbon per year), wildfire (−7.7 ± 2.4 teragrams of carbon per year), and erosion transport (−1.9 ± 0.13 teragrams of carbon per year). The positive CO 2 fertilization effect (+69 ± 12 teragrams of carbon per year) was insufficient to maintain the carbon sink strength. Our framework reveals key paths of carbon loss, with implications for carbon budget and energy policies in the United States and beyond.

Decision Making Under Uncertainty Human Subjects Data - Fire Evacuation Task

This dataset contains de-identified data from human subjects experiments, along with the images and code that were used to run the experiments (as a crowdsourced online study). In this study, participants were shown the probability of a house being in the burn zone of a wildfire. They were asked if they would stay in the house or evacuate in that scenario. The probability information was presented in different ways, including text and maps. The studies tested the impact of different visual cues on the participants' patterns of decisions.

Cost and Performance Estimates for State-of-the-Art and Advanced 1×1 H-Class Natural Gas-Fired Power Plants

As an extension of NETL's Fossil Energy Baseline for Electricity Generating Units Volume 1: Coal and Natural Gas to Electricity (FEB Rev 4a, this study develops cost and performance estimates for analogous NGCC cases using a state-of-the-art 2023 vintage H-Class CT in a 1×1 configuration, where a single combustion turbine and heat recovery steam generator are coupled to a single steam turbine on a common shaft. These 1×1 H-Class cases are used to develop cost and performance estimates of X-Class 1×1 NGCC cases with advanced performance characteristics, analogous to NETL’s cost and performance projections report.

A One-dimensional Heat Transfer Model for a Cooled Airfoil in a Direct-fired Supercritical CO 2 Turbine

A one-dimensional (1-D) heat transfer model was developed to predict the performance of a cooled airfoil for a supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO 2 ) turbine. The model included the effects of film cooling effectiveness, thermal barrier coating thickness, and internal Nusselt number augmentation. Trends for overall cooling effectiveness versus heat load parameter were obtained for over twelve unique thermal management schemes. The study found that adding a thermal barrier coating was the most effective scheme for increasing the airfoil overall cooling effectiveness. Internal cooling technologies have diminishing returns as the heat transfer coefficient augmentation increases past a factor of five, however the sensitivity of overall cooling effectiveness to heat transfer augmentation scales by a factor of 1.3 when a thermal barrier coating is introduced. Film cooling is seen as a long-term research area which will be inevitably explored as direct sCO 2 systems develop a market presence. However, the model indicates that realizable film cooling effectiveness levels yield a smaller improvement in overall cooling effectiveness than a thermal barrier coating.

Development of Radiation and Fire Resistant Polyurethane Foam in Support of Deactivation and Decommissioning [Poster]

FoamBag™ is a two-part polyurethane foam that has been down selected as a possible engineering solution for the decommissioning of radiologically contaminated pipes. Our main objective consists of establishing an internal barrier (plug) to mitigate the release of residual contamination prior to cutting operations and required pipework for deactivation and decommissioning projects. To ensure worker safety, we will also be analyzing hazards associated with the off gasses present during curing.

FY24 Efforts to Revive the ANS-54.8 Liquid Metal Fire Protection in LMR Plants Standard

The U.S. has Designed, constructed, and operated several sodium fast reactors (SFRs). To support these efforts and to document best practices, activities associated with the development of standards and consensus standards were carried out, however the vast majority of those SFR standards are currently in a withdrawn or inactive status.
