Contact angle and surface tension measurements of a five-ring polyphenyl ether

Contact angle measurements were performed for a five-ring polyphenyl ether isomeric mixture on M-50 steel in a dry nitrogen atmosphere. Two different techniques were used: (1) a tilting plate apparatus, and (2) a sessile drop apparatus. Measurements were made for the temperature range 25 to 190 C. Surface tension was measured by a differential maximum bubble pressure technique over the range 23 to 220C in room air. The critical surface energy of spreading (gamma (sub c)) was determined for the polyphenyl ether by plotting the cosine of the contact angle (theta) versus the surface tension (gamma (sub LV)). The straight line intercept at cosine theta = 1 is defined as gamma (sub c). Gamma (sub c) was found to be 30.1 dyn/cm for the tilting plate technique and 31.3 dyn/cm for the sessile drop technique. These results indicate that the polyphenyl ether is inherently autophobic (i.e., it will not spread on its own surface film until its surface tension is less than gamma (sub c). This phenomenon is discussed in light of the wettability and wear problems encountered with this fluid.

Laser-induced fluorescence of green plants. III - LIF spectral signatures of five major plant types

A technique amenable to remote sensing use which utilizes laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) properties of plants has been successfully used in the laboratory to identify five major plant types. These included herbaceous dicots, herbaceous monocots, conifers, hardwoods, and algae. Each of these plant types exhibited a characteristic LIF spectra when excited by a pulsed N2 laser emitting at 337 nm. Although monocots and dicots possess common fluorescence maxima at 440, 685, and 740 nm, they could be differentiated from one another by using the ratio of the square of the fluorescence intensity at 440 nm to the nonsquared intensity at 685 nm, i.e., (440)-squared/685. In all cases, monocots yielded a significantly higher ratio. Conifers have fluorescence maxima at 440, 525, and 740 nm but none at 685 nm. Hardwoods exhibited fluorescence at 440, 525, 685, and 740 nm. Algae had very low fluorescence at 440 nm, no fluorescence at 525 nm, and fluorescence maxima at 685 and 740 nm. For algae, the ratio of the fluorescence intensity at 685 nm to that at 740 nm was much greater than that for monocots, dicots, and hardwoods. The potential use of the LIF technique for individual species identification is suggested.

Locations and time histories of five 1979 gamma-ray bursts

The locations and time histories of five gamma-ray bursts that occurred between 1979 March 7 and March 31 were studied. The error box for GB 790325 has a typical dimension of about 1.5 arcmin. The other localizations, while not precise enough for thorough optical examination, contribute to distribution studies and allow radio and X-ray observations, catalog searches, and other archival work. A search through selected catalogs did reveal one object, the star FY Aql (cataloged as a Mira-type variable but probably a dwarf nova) inside one of the gamma-ray burst boxes. Given the parameters of this particular search, the probability of at least one chance association is 0.03. Both recent and archival optical examinations of some of the error boxes were carried out, and no indications of any actual physical associations were seen. One event, GB 790331, had an interesting spectral behavior, in that the leading edges of the two main peaks within the burst had harder spectra than the remainder of the event.

Large eddy simulation - The next five years

The prospect of major improvements in the performance of computers in the next five years means that large eddy simulation (LES), which has until now been strictly a research tool, may become a top-of-the-line engineering tool. In this paper, the historical development and past contributions of LES are reviewed. Then a discussion of the potential for applications of LES in new areas and of the developments needed to make LES a tool for the practicing engineer is given.

A Sr and Nd isotopic study of five Yamato polymict eucrites and a comparison to other Antarctic and ordinary eucrites

Sr and Nd isotopic analysis of five Yamato polymict eucrites indicate that these samples formed at about 4.6 Ga ago with initial Sr and Nd ratios essentially the same as the analyzed non-Antarctic eucrites. The Yamato eucrites have Sr, Sm, and Nd concentrations that consistently lie among the highest found in eucritic samples. This characteristic identifies these Yamato samples as a closely related group. Comparisons between these Yamato samples and other Antarctic polymict eucrites clearly estabishes that they all share some characteristic trace element features. Comparisons of Antarctic polymict eucrites with non-Antarctic ordinary eucrites reveal consistent differences. The most obvious is an enrichment of Rb in the polymict eucrites. These comparisons suggest that the Antarctic polymict eucrites belong to a single large family of material that is itself fairly diverse and distinct from the non-Antarctic eucrites.

Five-Parameter Bivariate Probability Distribution

NASA technical memorandum presents four papers about five-parameter bivariate gamma class of probability distributions. With some overlap of subject matter, papers address different aspects of theories of these distributions and use in forming statistical models of such phenomena as wind gusts. Provides acceptable results for defining constraints in problems designing aircraft and spacecraft to withstand large wind-gust loads.

Amino acids of the Murchison meteorite. II - Five carbon acyclic primary beta-, gamma-, and delta-amino alkanoic acids

The five-carbon acyclic primary beta, gamma, and delta amino alkanoic acids of the Murchison meteorite are studied using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and ion exchange chromatography. The chromatograms reveal that alpha is the most abundant monoamino alkanoic acid followed by gamma and beta, and an exponential increase in the amount of amino acid is observed as the carbon number increases in the homologous series. The influence of frictional heating, spontaneous thermal decomposition, and radiation of the synthesis of amino acids is examined. The data obtained support an amino acid synthesis process involving random combination of single-carbon precursors.

Arousal and stability - The effects of five new sympathomimetic drugs suggest a new principle for the prevention of space motion sickness

Sympathomimetic agents are frequent components in antimotion-sickness drug combinations because of their usefulness in counteracting the sedation caused by stressful motion or resulting from the administration of other antimotion-sickness drugs. The noradrenergic neurochemistry of the brain's arousal-attentional systems prompted us to evaluate the efficacy of five new sympathomimetic drugs and to further define the role of arousal in susceptibility to motion. Subjects were orally administered methamphetamine (20 mg), phenmetrazine (25 mg), phentermine (37.5 mg), methylphenidate (20 mg), or pemoline (75 mg) 2 h prior to taking a Staircase Profile Test. All of the drugs increased resistance to stressful coriolis stimulation by 80-120 percent. Methylphenidate and pemoline showed fewer side effects. These findings, interpreted in conjunction with the documented inefficacy of most anticholinergic and antihistaminergic drugs tested to date, suggest that sympathomimetic drugs or a generalized state of arosusal can inhibit the development of motion sickness.

Remote sensing of Spartina anglica biomass in five French salt marshes

The utilization of regression models to estimate Spartina anglica biomass in marshes is studied. Radiance data for five S. anglica plots located along the coast of Brittany, France at 48 deg 40 min N between 1 deg 30 min W- 4 deg 30 min W was collected with a hand-held radiometer. Biomass data is derived from the radiance data, and the radiance and biomass data are employed in the formulation of simple regression models. The models are applied to the radiance data from the other four marshes. It is observed that the models predicted the biomass for all four marshes, and for three of the four marshes the estimated leaf and live biomass are within 1-13 percent of the harvest values. The effects of slit and dead tissues on the radiance from the S. anglica canopies are analyzed. It is noted that simple regression models which correlate radiance data to S. Anglica biomass in one marsh can be applied to the accurate prediction of leaf and live S. anglica biomass in other marshes.

A micrographic study of bending failure in five thermoplastic/carbon fiber composite laminates

The local deformation and failure sequences of five thermoplastic matrix composites were microscopically observed while bending the samples in a small fixture attached to a microscope stage. The themoplastics are polycarbonate, polysulfone, polyphenylsulfide, polyethersulfone, and polyetheretherketone. Comparison was made to an epoxy matrix composite, 5208/T-300. Laminates tested are (0/90) sub 2S, with outer ply fibers parallel to the beam axis. Four point bending was used at a typical span-to-thickness ratio of 39:1. It was found that all of the thermoplastic composites failed by abrupt longitudinal compression buckling of the outer ply. Very little precursory damage was observed. Micrographs reveal typical fiber kinking associated with longitudinal compression failure. Curved fracture surfaces on the fibers suggest they failed in bending rather than direct compression. Delamination was suppressed in the thermoplastic composites, and the delamination that did occur was found to be the result of compression buckling, rather than visa-versa. Microbuckling also caused other subsequent damage such as ply splitting, transverse ply shear failure, fiber tensile failure, and transverse ply cracking.

The solar nebula redox state as recorded by the most reduced chondrules of five primitive chondrites

Mafic minerals in the most reduced chondrules of five primitive meteorites were analyzed with an electron microprobe to determine the lower limit on their FeO contents. The accuracy obtained was + or - 0.01 weight percent FeO. The thermodynamic relationship between mole fraction FeSiO3 and pO2 of the ambient nebular gas at the time of mineral equilibration was established, and was used to infer the local O/H ratio of the nebular gas during chondrule formation. The lowest ferrosilite compositions reflected equilibration at 1500 K with a gas 2-18 times more oxidizing than a gas of solar composition. Olivines in low-FeO unequilibrated ordinary chondrites (UOC) chondrules are uniformly more FeO-rich than coexisting pyroxenes. This discrepancy suggests that a significant change in the O/H ratio of the nebular gas occurred between the time of olivine and pyroxene crystallization in the region of the nebula where UOCs formed. Mineral compositions in the chondrules of two C2 chondrites studied suggest they formed in a more homogeneous region of the nebula than the UOCs.

Historical data retrieval study - Results for the first five years of KSC STS payload processing

This paper identifies general and specific quantitative and qualitative results from a study of actual operational experiences while processing 185 science, applications, and commercial payloads for the first five years of STS operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC). All the non-DOD payloads from STS-2 through STS-33 were part of the study. The emphasis was placed on various program planning and events that affected KSC processing, payload experiences and improvements, payload hardware condition after arrival, services to customers, and the impact of STS operations and delays. From these initial considerations, operational drivers were identified, data for selected processing measurements collected and analyzed, processing criteria and options determined, and STS payload results and conclusions reached. The study showed a significant reduction in time and effort needed by STS customers and KSC to process a wide variety of payload configurations, although even the simplest payloads required more processing resources and time than were initially assumed.

A computational analysis of flow separation over five different airfoil geometries at high angles-of-attack

The flux splitting method of Van Leer (1982) and an implicit, upwind-biased, finite-volume scheme of Rumsey (1985) for solving the two-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations were applied to analyze five airfoil geometries (the NACA 0012, 12-percent Joukowski, NACA 4412, NACA 65-015, and LS1-0417 sections), at high angles of attack. The effect of grid density and grid extent on the Strouhal number of the unsteady flow was computed, as well as the effect of variations in Mach number, Reynolds number, and angle of attack. It was found, that past an angle of attack of 20 deg, Strouhal numbers were independent of angle of attack (at a constant value of 0.115), agreeing well with the experimental findings of Tyler (1931).

Radio science with Voyager 2 at Uranus - Results on masses and densities of the planet and five principal satellites

Phase-coherent Doppler data generated by the Deep Space Network with the radio communication system during the Voyager 2 encounter with Uranus in January 1986, optical navigation data generated by the Voyager Navigation Team with the Voyager 2 imaging system, and ground-based astrometric data obtained over an 8-yr period are compiled and analyzed to determine the masses and densities of Uranus and its principal satellites. The data-analysis procedures are explained in detail, and the results are presented in tables and graphs. The mean density of Uranus is found to be 1.285 + or - 0.001 g/cu cm, whereas the mean uncompressed mass of all five satellites is 1.48 + or - 0.06 g/cu cm, or 0.10 g/cu cm above the density expected for a homogeneous solar mix of rock, H2O and NH3 ice, and CH4 as clathrate hydrate. This difference is tentatively attributed to the presence of 15 mass percent of pure graphite, which would provide the thermal conductivity required to keep the satellites cold and undifferentiated.
