Dataset documenting reaction-induced changes to five fractured foamed wellbore cement cores during CO2 fluid flow

This dataset consists of reconstructed CT scans for four fractured foamed cement cores, generated in the lab using Portland Class H cement, and associated processed data. The cements were exposed to reactive brines, and CT scans were take at different time points through the experiment. The CT imaging allows for the tracking of dissolution-induced changes to fracture morphology, as well as alteration and dissolution in the cement matrix.

Medium Temperature Furnace Baking of Low-beta 650 MHz Five-cell Cavities

Medium Temperature baking of low beta 650 MHz cavities was conducted in a UHV furnace. A systematic study of cavity surface resistance components, residual and BCS, was conducted, including analyzing surface resistance due to trapped magnetic flux. Cavities showed an average 4.5 nano-ohm surface resistance at 17 MV/m under 2 K, which meets PIP-II specifications with a 40% margin. The results provided helpful information for the PIP-II project to optimize the cavity processing recipe for cryomodule application. The results were compared to the 1.3 GHz cavity that received a similar furnace baking.

The Road to Trinity: Seventy-five years ago, Los Alamos scientists detonated the world’s first nuclear explosion

With a brilliant hot flash and a loud boom, the giant mushroom cloud with its fiery core filled the predawn sky above the New Mexico desert. The nuclear age had begun. It was 75 years ago on July 16, 1945, that Los Alamos scientists changed the world with the successful detonation of “the Gadget” – the device created to test the Fat Man implosion-type plutonium weapon before it was taken into combat. However, the road to Trinity, as the test was named by J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is thought to have been inspired by a line in a John Donne poem, was a difficult one.

Materials and Fuels Complex Five-Year Mission Strategy (FY21- FY25)

The Idaho National Laboratory (INL), through its designated mission of advancing innovative nuclear energy solutions, is actively engaged in the research, development, demonstration and deployment of advanced nuclear technology, as well as in fostering private-public partnership for technology development. Key to the success of INL’s mission is the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC), the only complex in the U.S. that hosts a world-class assemblage of facilities, capabilities and instruments for handling, testing, and characterizing radioactive materials. Driven by its mission/vision of “Engineering and Experiments that Drive the World’s Nuclear Energy Future,” MFC is at the center of INL’s – and indeed the Department of Energy’s – advanced nuclear technology development initiatives, providing essential capabilities such as engineering-scale high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel production, reactor demonstration facilities, post-irradiation examination, and transient irradiation testing. Furthermore, MFC provides an ideal environment for test beds that are utilized for research, development and demonstration (RD&D) activities on used fuel treatment, nuclear non-proliferation, forensics, and nuclear power sources used for space exploration missions conducted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Science and Solutions for a Planet Under Pressure: Synthetic Research, Analytics, and Community Engagement on Five Priority Theme Areas

Support from the Department of Energy proved instrumental in supporting the work of Global Council for Science and the Environment (GCSE) on synthetic research, analysis, and community engagement, oriented around the themes and discussions from the GCSE Drawdown 2021 Conference — Research to Action: Science and Solutions for a Planet Under Pressure. These efforts helped inform and enhance the societal relevance of the knowledge that has been generated through the conference and, at the same time, advance the scientific insights acquired through synthesis and scientific translation efforts. The work centered on three main objectives: 1) documentation of findings from the completed GCSE 2021, culminating in the publication of a synthesis report; 2) development and vetting of integrated use cases that illustrate synthesis methods and enable scientific outreach, communications, and translational discussions among universities and the broader research community; and 3) strengthening the scientific basis for energy education research by sharing findings in university-educator fora.

The Net Zero World Initiative’s Preliminary Analysis of Decarbonization Pathways for Five Countries. Executive Summary

Under the Net Zero World Initiative, the United States is marshalling the forces of nine U.S. government agencies, led by the U.S. Department of Energy, to partner with philanthropies and multiple countries to cocreate and implement tailored technical and investment pathways to accelerate the decarbonization of global energy systems. In addition, 10 of the DOE national laboratories have built a consortium housed in the Net Zero World Action Center to implement this vision by providing the deep analysis and modeling required to carry out the vision.

Five years of ForTrilinos ECP

The ForTrilinos subproject of the Exascale Computing Project (ECP) was initiated to bring the capabilities and scalability of the Trilinos numerical solver collection to Fortran scientific application codes. A novel Fortran extension to the Simplified Wrapper and Interface Generator (SWIG) tool, which automatically generates Fortran bindings from existing C/C++ library code, has been applied to key Trilinos solver libraries to generate the new ForTrilinos libraries. SWIG-Fortran has additionally been used to generate new Fortran compatibility layers for additional scientific libraries and applications. This report summarizes the products and impact of the ForTrilinos subproject.

Materials and Fuels Complex FY-23 - FY-27: Five-Year Investment Strategy

The Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE) vision is to “Advance nuclear energy science and technology to meet U.S. energy, environmental, and economic needs.” The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) serves as the foundation of a nuclear RD&D enabling test bed at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and is an integral part of a National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) strategy. MFC facilities focus on developing and maintaining RD&D capabilities that can increase research throughput, reduce barriers to deployment, and facilitate commercialization of new ideas and technologies for clean and secure sources of energy.
