Multi axes vibration fixtures

A simplified technique and apparatus are described for testing the effects of vibration on various material specimen. Particular attention was given to tests along the orthogonal vibrational planes in order to prove the strength of the item under extraordinary conditions to which it will be subjected.

Tissue stimulator enclosure welding fixture

It was demonstrated that the thickness of the stimulator titanium enclosure is directly related to the battery recharge time cycle. Reduction of the titanium enclosure thickness from approximately 0.37 mm (0.015 inch) to 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) significantly reduced the recharge time cycle and thereby patient inconvenience. However, fabrication of titanium enclosures from the thinner material introduced problems in forming, holding, and welding that required improvement in state of the art shop practices. The procedures that were utilized to resolve these fabrication problems are described.

Drill-motor holding fixture

Guide improves accuracy and reduces likelihood of bit breakage in drilling large work pieces. Drill motor is mounted on pipe that slides on furniture clamp. Drill is driven into work piece by turning furniture-clamp handle.

Transfer of Strings to the Module Fixture

Work station for transferring entire strings of solar cells places successive strings alined, with offset, or reversed end for end. Thus, various solar module formats can be accommodated. Two vacuum cups hold each solar cell in string being transferred.

Fixture for environmental exposure of structural materials under compression load

A device for stressing a deformable material specimen consists of top plate and a bottom plate sandwiching a guide cylinder. The specimen is positioned on the bottom plate and attached to a load piston. Force is applied through the top plate into the guide cylinder. Once the specimen is loaded, the stress is maintained by tightening tie bolt nuts.

Prototype Wash Water Renovation System Integration with Government-Furnished Wash Fixture

A total renovation concept for removing objectionable materials from spacecraft wash water to make the water reusable was developed. This concept included ferric chloride pretreatment to coagulate suspended solids such as soap and lint, pressure filtration, and carbon adsorption and ion exchange to remove trace dissolved organics and inorganic salts. A breadboard model which was developed to demonstrate the design adequacy of the various system components and the limits on system capacities and efficiencies.

Holding fixture for a hot stamping press

A hand held guide for manually positioning a work piece between the anvil rib and tool of a hot die stamping press is described. A groove completed by interchangeable cover plates attached at one end of the guide conforms to a cross sectional dimension common to similar workpieces and, with a force fit, retentively holds each of the workpieces.

Space Shuttle AFRSI OMS pod environment test using model 81-0 test fixture in the Ames Research Center 9x7-foot supersonic wind tunnel (OS-314A/B/C)

A test was conducted in the NASA/Ames Research Center 9x7-foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel to help resolve an anomaly that developed during the STS-6 orbiter flight wherein sections of the Advanced Flexible Reusable Surface Insulation (AFRSI) covering the OMS pods suffered some damage. A one-third scale two-dimensional shell structure model of an OMS pod cross-section was employed to support the test articles. These consisted of 15 AFRSI blanket panels form-fitted over the shell structures for exposure to simulated flight conditions. Of six baseline blankets, two were treated with special surface coatings. Two other panels were configured with AFRSI sections removed from the OV099 orbiter vehicle after the STS-6 flight. Seven additional specimens incorporated alternative designs and repairs. Following a series of surface pressure calibration runs, the specimens were exposed to simulated ascent and entry dynamic pressure profiles. Entry conditions included the use of a vortex generator to evaluate the effect of shed vortices on the AFRSI located in the area of concern.

Electrostatic forming and testing of polymer films on a 16-foot diameter test fixture

The large space systems technology program investigated different forms of large, lightweight, deployable structures which could be carried on the Space Shuttle. Different forms and concepts of antennas as a type of large space system were investigated. The electrostatically controlled membrane reflector made of metallized material concept was chosen. The concept is a good candidate for creating an antenna with high surface quality and has the ability to be packaged and deployed from the Shuttle with a significant reduction in weight compared to other antenna types.

Fixture For Polishing Optical-Fiber Ends

Wedged and beveled ends lapped with precision for laser applications. See "Wedge Fibers Suppress Feedback of Laser Beam" (LAR-13074). For obtuse-angled wedge end, both sides of fiber polished similarly. After one side of fiber is lapped, fiber support removed. Holding block with fiber turned over, and fiber support replaced. Second side of fiber then lapped.

Universal nondestructive mm-wave integrated circuit test fixture

Monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) test includes a bias module having spring-loaded contacts which electrically engage pads on a chip carrier disposed in a recess of a base member. RF energy is applied to and passed from the chip carrier by chamfered edges of ridges in the waveguide passages of housings which are removably attached to the base member. Thru, Delay, and Short calibration standards having dimensions identical to those of the chip carrier assure accuracy and reliability of the test. The MMIC chip fits in an opening in the chip carrier with the boundaries of the MMIC lying on movable reference planes thereby establishing accuracy and flexibility.

O-ring gasket test fixture

An apparatus is presented for testing O-ring gaskets under a variety of temperature, pressure, and dynamic loading conditions. Specifically, this apparatus has the ability to simulate a dynamic loading condition where the sealing surface in contact with the O-ring moves both away from and axially along the face of the O-ring.

Generic Techniques for the Calibration of Robots with Application of the 3-D Fixtures and Statistical Technique on the PUMA 500 and ARID Robots

A relatively simple, inexpensive, and generic technique that could be used in both laboratories and some operation site environments is introduced at the Robotics Applications and Development Laboratory (RADL) at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). In addition, this report gives a detailed explanation of the set up procedure, data collection, and analysis using this new technique that was developed at the State University of New York at Farmingdale. The technique was used to evaluate the repeatability, accuracy, and overshoot of the Unimate Industrial Robot, PUMA 500. The data were statistically analyzed to provide an insight into the performance of the systems and components of the robot. Also, the same technique was used to check the forward kinematics against the inverse kinematics of RADL's PUMA robot. Recommendations were made for RADL to use this technique for laboratory calibration of the currently existing robots such as the ASEA, high speed controller, Automated Radiator Inspection Device (ARID) etc. Also, recommendations were made to develop and establish other calibration techniques that will be more suitable for site calibration environment and robot certification.

The large-angle magnetic suspension test fixture

As part of a NASA effort to develop the technology and techniques required to demonstrate the magnetic suspension of objects over wide ranges of attitudes, a small-scale demonstration project was undertaken. The objectives here are to suspend a cylindrical element containing a permanent magnet core, to demonstrate stability and control in five degrees-of-freedom, and to permit controlled rotation of the model in one degree-of-freedom over the full range of 360 deg. Further constraints are that all suspension and control electromagnets are to be behind a flat plane, located some distance from the model. Since this is a ground-based experiment and in order to maintain generality, the plane is chosen to be horizontal with the model levitated above the plane by repulsive forces.
