Hybrid water immersion simulation of manual IVA performance in weightlessness

A description is given of the development, tests, and analysis of a manual simulator. The simulator was developed to test mass handling and translation under weightlessness conditions by a test subject. The system is composed of a hybrid simulator with a combination of water immersion and mechanical, Peter Pan, simulation. The concept operates on the equivalence principle, with the subject and the cargo remaining quasi-stationary. Movement is effected through a moving device controlled through force by the subject. Motion response is determined through computations of the inertial movement under such conditions.

A study analysis of cable-body systems totally immersed in a fluid stream

A general stability analysis of a cable-body system immersed in a fluid stream is presented. The analytical portion of this analysis treats the system as being essentially a cable problem, with the body dynamics giving the end conditions. The mathematical form of the analysis consists of partial differential wave equations, with the end and auxiliary conditions being determined from the body equations of motion. The equations uncouple to give a lateral problem and a longitudinal problem as in first order airplane dynamics. A series of tests on a tethered wind tunnel model provide a comparison of the theory with experiment.

Current distribution on an infinite tubular antenna immersed in a cold collisional magnetoplasma.

Based upon a boundary-value formulation, a new approximate expression is derived for the total axial current on an infinite antenna immersed in an unbounded, cold, collisional magnetoplasma with a dc magnetic field oriented parallel to the antenna. Numerical results are presented for the current distributions over plasma parameters corresponding to each of the eight regions of the Clemmow-Mullaly-Allis diagram and for different values of the collision frequency.

Physiologic responses to water immersion in man: A compendium of research

A total of 221 reports published through December 1973 in the area of physiologic responses to water immersion in man were summarized. The author's abstract or summary was used whenever possible. Otherwise, a detailed annotation was provided under the subheadings: (1) purpose, (2) procedures and methods, (3) results, and (4) conclusions. The annotations are in alphabetical order by first author; author and subject indexes are included. Additional references are provided in the selected bibliography.

Sonic environment of aircraft structure immersed in a supersonic jet flow stream

Test methods for determining the sonic environment of aircraft structure that is immersed in the flow stream of a high velocity jet or that is subjected to the noise field surrounding the jet, were investigated. Sonic environment test data measured on a SCAT 15-F model in the flow field of Mach 1.5 and 2.5 jets were processed. Narrow band, lateral cross correlation and noise contour plots are presented. Data acquisition and reduction methods are depicted. A computer program for scaling the model data is given that accounts for model size, jet velocity, transducer size, and jet density. Comparisons of scaled model data and full size aircraft data are made for the L-1011, S-3A, and a V/STOL lower surface blowing concept. Sonic environment predictions are made for an engine-over-the-wing SST configuration.

A numerical comparison with an exact solution for the transient response of a cylinder immersed in a fluid

The transient response of an elastic cylindrical shell immersed in an acoustic media that is engulfed by a plane wave is determined numerically. The method applies to the USA-STAGS code which utilizes the finite element method for the structural analysis and the doubly asymptotic approximation for the fluid-structure interaction. The calculations are compared to an exact analysis for two separate loading cases: a plane step wave and an exponentially decaying plane wave.

Investigation of electrical noise in selenium-immersed thermistor bolometers

The selenium immersed, thermistor bolometer, IR detector failed due to spurious and escalating electrical noise outburst as a function of time at elevated temperatures during routine ground based testing in a space simulated environment. Spectrographic analysis of failed bolometers revealed selenium pure zones in the insulating selenium arsenic (Se-As) glass film which surrounds the active sintered Mn, Ni, Co oxide flake. The selenium pure film was identified as a potentially serious failure mechanism. Significant changes were instituted in the manufacturing techniques along with more stringent process controls which eliminated the selenium pure film and successfully produced 22study bolometers.
