Image analysis by geostatistical and neural-network methods applications in glaciology

The applicability of neural network techniques, in the classification of ice surfaces and crevasse patterns, was analyzed. The observations of the Bering Glacier (Alaska) obtained from a surface survey and from the global positioning system (GPS) were used. A geographical information system was applied to test the usefulness of standard approaches. The information in the image needed to be reduced prior to the classification. The reduction was performed with a fast variogram algorithm sampling in three oblique directions. The resultant vectors provided the input for the neural network.

Effects of Coatings on Water Intrusion and Strain Gauge Durability in Submerged Fatigue Conditions: Preprint

Marine energy structures are typically made using composite materials and are repeatedly loaded by currents and waves. Submersion and repeated loading lead to two environmental effects: moisture intrusion and mechanical fatigue. To understand the combined effects of moisture intrusion and mechanical fatigue on marine energy structures, submerged fatigue testing can be used. Submerged fatigue testing often requires submerged instrumentation to validate component manufacturing methods and models. Measuring strain is critical for understanding marine energy component loads. One common method for measuring strain is by using foil strain gauges, but the durability of strain gauges in submerged fatigue conditions was not well-understood. To increase strain gauge durability and protection from contamination, delamination, and water intrusion, strain gauge coatings may be applied over strain gauges and wire connections. In this study, strain gauges were adhered to composite coupons, coated, and mechanically tested in a water tank. Cycles to composite failure, cycles to strain gauge failure, strains, and strain gauge failure modes were used to measure the effects of strain gauge coatings on composite fatigue life and strain gauge durability. The methods developed and measurements taken at the coupon scale in this study will be used to inform methods and designs for subsequent submerged subcomponent testing, full-scale testing, and standards development. The benefits of designing marine energy structures to informed standards and designs are decreased lifetime costs and increased reliability and energy production, ultimately leading to a sustainable and low-carbon energy system.

The coatings did not have significant effects on composite fatigue life or strain gauge durability. The methods developed and measurements taken at the coupon scale in this study will be used to inform methods and designs for subsequent submerged subcomponent testing, full-scale testing, and standards development. The eight-color asteroid survey - Standard stars

Compositionally diagnostic information regarding the spectral reflectance of faint asteroids and planetary satellites, obtained using a photometric system, is presented. Standard UBV and range in effective wavelength from 0.34 to 1.04 microns are among the eight broadband filters relative to the study. An InGaAsP photomultiplier of high quantum efficiencies employed for longer wavelengths, allows work to magnitude 17 and fainter when used in conjunction with a 2 m telescope. Magnitudes and color indices with mean uncertainty + or - 0.006 mag for 50 standard stars are presented, and by setting the mean colors of four of these stars to zero, the zero point of the system is established. Sun color implications resulting from the study are U-B = 0.20 + or - 0.02, and B-V = 0.67 + or - 0.02.

EnviroNET: An on-line environment data base for LDEF data

EnviroNET is an on-line, free form data base intended to provide a centralized depository for a wide range of technical information on environmentally induced interactions of use to Space Shuttle customers and spacecraft designers. It provides a user friendly, menu driven format on networks that are connected globally and is available twenty-four hours a day, every day. The information updated regularly, includes expository text, tabular numerical data, charts and graphs, and models. The system pools space data collected over the years by NASA, USAF, other government facilities, industry, universities, and ESA. The models accept parameter input from the user and calculate and display the derived values corresponding to that input. In addition to the archive, interactive graphics programs are also available on space debris, the neutral atmosphere, radiation, magnetic field, and ionosphere. A user friendly informative interface is standard for all the models with a pop-up window, help window with information on inputs, outputs, and caveats. The system will eventually simplify mission analysis with analytical tools and deliver solution for computational intense graphical applications to do 'What if' scenarios. A proposed plan for developing a repository of LDEF information for a user group concludes the presentation.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Cosmology with moments of weak lensing mass maps

We present a cosmological analysis using the second and third moments of the weak lensing mass (convergence) maps from the first three years of data (Y3) data of the Dark Energy Survey. The survey spans an effective area of 4139 square degrees and uses the images of over 100 million galaxies to reconstruct the convergence field. The second moment of the convergence as a function of smoothing scale contains information similar to standard shear 2-point statistics. The third moment, or the skewness, contains additional non-Gaussian information. The data is analyzed in the context of the Λ CDM model, varying five cosmological parameters and 19 nuisance parameters modeling astrophysical and measurement systematics. Our modeling of the observables is completely analytical, and has been tested with simulations in our previous methodology study. We obtain a 1.7% measurement of the amplitude of fluctuations parameter S 8 ≡ σ 8 ( Ω m / 0.3 ) 0.5 = 0.784 ± 0.013 . The measurements are shown to be internally consistent across redshift bins, angular scales, and between second and third moments. In particular, the measured third moment is consistent with the expectation of gravitational clustering under the Λ CDM model. The addition of the third moment improves the constraints on S 8 and Ω m by ∼ 15 % and ∼ 25 % compared to an analysis that only uses second moments. We compare our results with Planck constraints from the cosmic microwave background, finding a 2.2 – 2.8 σ tension in the full parameter space, depending on the combination of moments considered. The third moment, independently, is in 2.8 σ tension with Planck, and thus provides a cross-check on the analyses of 2-point correlations.

NASA access mechanism: Graphical user interface information retrieval system

Access to online information sources of aerospace, scientific, and engineering data, a mission focus for NASA's Scientific and Technical Information Program, has always been limited to factors such as telecommunications, query language syntax, lack of standardization in the information, and the lack of adequate tools to assist in searching. Today, the NASA STI Program's NASA Access Mechanism (NAM) prototype offers a solution to these problems by providing the user with a set of tools that provide a graphical interface to remote, heterogeneous, and distributed information in a manner adaptable to both casual and expert users. Additionally, the NAM provides access to many Internet-based services such as Electronic Mail, the Wide Area Information Servers system, Peer Locating tools, and electronic bulletin boards.

Geothermal Uncertainty Representation in reV: the Renewable Energy Potential Model

We present a preliminary methodology for including geothermal resource uncertainty into the Renewable Energy Potential model, which estimates potential capacity and costs on a gridded surface at the national scale. The uncertainty outputs characterize the 10th, 50th and 90th percentile for geothermal resources using two energy capacity estimation equations. We then present a method and results that demonstrate how other geologic data layers, which may be indicative of permeability, can be used to inform the mean and standard deviation of the geothermal capacity. We demonstrate how the mean and standard deviation can be defined or partially informed by using collocated regression estimates and estimate errors, respectively . These regression results are from 36 observed geothermal power plants in the Great Basin region and are also used to benchmark the P10-P90 calculations.
