Latch and trip mechanisms for triggering large loads with small loads through interrupted motion
Corrosion is studied potentiostatically in the corroding environment of distilled water with an instrument that measures the potential of the corroding specimen immediately after interruption of the polarizing current. No current is flowing. The process permits compensation for IR drops when potentiostatic control is used in high resistance systems.
Electrical stimulation effects of carotid sinus on sinus rate and atrioventricular conduction for vagi and sympathetic nerves interruption to heart in dogs
Stress corrosion resistance is increased by distorting surface grain-boundary structure and by interrupting the corrosion and stress corrosion. The first is accomplished by machining or shot peening and the second by removal from and later reexposure to the corrosive environment.
Microprogram scheme enables computer to recover from failure in one of its two central processing units during time duration of instruction in which failure occurs. Microprogram advantages include - /1/ built-in interpretive capability, /2/ selection of processing interrupts by priority, and /3/ economical use of bootstrap sequence.
System permits valve housings or other fillings to be installed in live steam lines or water pipes without interrupting their operation, thus eliminating current tapping restrictions. Two basic assemblies for installation under pressure are described.
Computer controlled ground based command and data acquisition software system for OAO-A2 spacecraft remote control stations, discussing interface with monitor and interrupt capabilities
Community aircraft noise intensity indexes from annoyance and physiological reaction standpoint, discussing sleep interruption, hearing loss, communication interference, etc
Two level system checkout in which first level satisfies continuous monitoring requirements and second level provides fault isolation to satisfy maintenance requirements, provides self-checking capability for monitoring system and enables recovery from unexpected error or failure interruptions. System must perform operational duties of navigation, control, and experimentation.
Simple, reliable ground-hold refrigeration system for common-bulkhead tank meets design criteria and objectives for ground-hold of oxygen difluoride and diborane. System is failsafe and malfunctions can be rectified without interruption of basic system functions.
Meter probes incorporating integral fuse holder which contains limitation fuse of 600 V, 5A, with interruption rating of 50,000 KVA. provide required protection and minimize danger incurred by defective or improperly operated meter.
Fluidic sensor is used to measure passage of film without mechanical contact with counting device. Same sensor system may be used for different sizes of film. System has two fluidic sensors and operates on principle of electrically recording interruptions in air stream.
Electro-chemical grinding technique has rotation speed control, constant feed rates, and contour control. Hypersonic engine parts of nickel alloys can be almost 100% machined, keeping tool pressure at virtual zero. Technique eliminates galling and permits constant surface finish and burr-free interrupted cutting.
An inexpensive programmable clock was built for a digital PDP-12 computer. The instruction list includes skip on flag; clear the flag, clear the clock, and stop the clock; and preset the counter with the contents of the accumulator and start the clock. The clock counts at a rate determined by an external oscillator and causes an interrupt and sets a flag when a 12-bit overflow occurs. An overflow can occur after 1 to 4096 counts. The clock can be built for a total parts cost of less than $100 including power supply and I/O connector. Slight modification can be made to permit its use on larger machines (16 bit, 24 bit, etc.) and logic level shifting can be made to make it compatible with any computer.
Experiments to determine the dependence of homing pigeons on the sun as a navigational cue are discussed. Various methods were employed to interrupt the circadian rhythms of the pigeons prior to release. It was determined that the sun may serve as a compass, but that topographic features are more important for navigation. The effects of a magnetic field produced by electric equipment carried by the bird were also investigated. It was concluded that magnetic fields may have a small effect on the homing ability. The exact nature of the homing pigeon's navigational ability is still unknown after years of elaborate experimentation.
The phenomenon of wall contraction characterized by a peak in the velocity field relationship and a region of negative differential mobility is observed. Uniaxial magnetic thin films of various compositions and magnetic properties are studied in careful interrupted pulse experiments. The observed results agree quite well with the theory for bulk samples.
The subsolidus cooling history of basaltic rocks can be deduced from the distribution of divalent Mg and Fe ions over the two nonequivalent positions M1 and M2 in pyroxene. The ion exchange reaction between M1 and M2 is generally characterized by rapid kinetics. It is found that the normal cooling process of basalt 14053 was interrupted at a temperature below 840 C and that the rock was then quenched extremely rapidly.
A pulsed metallic-plasma generator is described which utilizes a vacuum arc as the plasma source. The arc is initiated on the surface of a consumable cathode which can be any electrically conductive material. Ignition is accomplished by using a current pulse to vaporize a portion of a conductive film on the surface of an insulator separating the cathode from the ignition electrode. The film is regenerated during the ensuing arc. Over 100 million ignition cycles have been accomplished by using four 0.125-in. diameter zinc cathodes operating in parallel and high-density aluminum-oxide insulators. Among the applications being investigated for the generator are metal deposition, vacuum pumping, electric propulsion, and high-power dc arc interruption.
