Porous glass makes effective substrate for ozone-sensing reagent

Porous-glass substrate is used for absorption of a dye used in measuring the concentration of atmospheric ozone at high altitudes. This measurement is based on the chemiluminescence produced in the reaction between ozone and the dye, rhodamine B. The porous glass provides a large interstitial surface area which promotes this reaction.

Isostatic compression process converts polyaromatics into structural material

Isostatic compression process compacts certain powdered aromatic polymers into homogeneous materials that can be machined to form useful components, such as bearings. It provides for complete removal of air in the interstitial spaces surrounding the granules of the powdered polymer before the powder is subjected to isostatic compression.

Thermodynamic properties of carbon in b.c.c. and f.c.c. iron-silicon-carbon solid solutions.

The equilibrium between hydrogen-methane gas mixtures and Fe-Si-C solid solutions has been investigated both as a function of temperature and carburizing gas composition. The thermodynamic properties of the carbon atoms in both b.c.c. and f.c.c. solid solution have been derived from the equilibrium measurements. The results found have been compared with those of earlier investigations and with the predictions of recent theoretical models on ternary solid solutions containing both substitutional and interstitial solute atoms.

Passenger fluid volumes measured before and after a prolonged commercial jet flight.

Interstitial and intracellular fluid volumes were calculated from measured plasma volume, extracellular volume and total body water of six subjects before and after a 24-hour commercial overseas flight. No change occurred in these spaces or in peripheral hematocrit or total serum protein concentration. The subjective feeling of dehydration and the actual swelling of the lower extremities characteristically found among passengers at the end of a long trip of this type seems to represent a shift in body fluids to the dependent portions of the body rather than water retention or a decrease in the intravascular water volume.

Luna 16 sample G36 - Another crystalline product of an extremely mafic magma.

Luna 16 sample G36 is a microbasalt containing skeletal olivine, plagioclase, ilmenite, and interstitial pyroxene. It apparently resulted from very rapid crystallization of a highly fractionated, totally liquid mafic magma. Although different in many details, G36 is generally similar to the ferromagnesian-rich Apollo 11 and 12 basalts. In this respect, it emphasizes the continuing problem of identifying a process on the moon which generated highly mafic magmas.

Stable palladium alloys for diffusion of hydrogen

Literature search on hydrogen absorption effect on palladium alloys revealed existence of alloy compositions in which alpha--beta transition does not take place. Survey conclusions: 40 percent gold alloy of palladium should be used in place of palladium; alloy must be free of interstitial impurities; and metallic surfaces of tube must be clean.
