Equilibrium Thermodynamic Properties of Aqueous Solutions of Ionic Liquid 1-Ethyl-3-Methylimidazolium Methanesulfonate [EMIM][MeSO3]

Abstract The ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methanesulfonate ([EMIM][MeSO 3 ]) has been considered as a promising alternative desiccant to triethylene glycol and lithium bromide commonly used in the industry. In this paper, the water activity coefficient of this binary system was measured from 303 K to 363 K with water concentration from 18% to 92%. The interaction energies between the ionic liquid molecules ( $${g}_{22}$$ g 22 ) and between the ionic liquid and water molecules ( $${g}_{12}$$ g 12 ) for the [EMIM][MeSO 3 ]/water binary system were determined from the water activity coefficient data using the Non-Random Two-Liquid (NRTL) model. The magnitude of the interaction energy between the [EMIM][MeSO 3 ] and water molecules ( $${g}_{12}$$ g 12 ) was found to be in the range of 45~49 kJ/mol, which was about 20% larger than that between the water molecules ( $${g}_{11}$$ g 11 ) in the [EMIM][MeSO 3 ]/water system. The large ( $${g}_{12}$$ g 12 ) can explain many observed macroscopic thermodynamic properties such as strong hygroscopicity in the ionic liquid [EMIM][MeSO 3 ]. These interaction energies were used to determine the heat of desorption of the [EMIM][MeSO 3 ]/water system, and the obtained heat of desorption was in good agreement with that calculated from the conventional Clausius-Clapeyron Equation.

Influence of the molecular weight and size distribution of PSS on mixed ionic-electronic transport in PEDOT:PSS

The commercially available polyelectrolyte complex poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is ubiquitous in organic and hybrid electronics. As such, it has often been used as a benchmark material for fundamental studies and the development of new electronic devices. Yet, most studies on PEDOT:PSS have focused on its electronic conductivity in dry environments, with less consideration given to its ion transport, coupled ionic-electronic transport, and charge storage properties in aqueous environments. These properties are essential for applications in bioelectronics (sensors, actuators), charge storage devices, and electrochromic displays. Importantly, past studies on mixed ionic-electronic transport in PEDOT:PSS neglected to consider how the molecular structure of PSS affects mixed ionic-electronic transport. Herein, we therefore investigated the effect of the molecular weight and size distribution of PSS on the electronic properties and morphology of PEDOT:PSS both in dry and aqueous environments, and overall performance in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). Using reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with two different chain transfer agents, six PSS samples with monomodal, narrow (D = 1.1) and broad (D = 1.7) size distributions and varying molecular weights were synthesized and used as matrices for PEDOT. We found that using higher molecular weight of PSS (Mn = 145 kg mol –1 ) and broad dispersity led to OECTs with the highest transconductance (up to 16 mS) and [μC*] values (~140 F cm –1 V –1 s –1 ) in PEDOT:PSS, despite having a lower volumetric capacitance (C* = 35 ± 4 F cm –3 ). The differences were best explained by studying the microstructure of the films by atomic force microscopy (AFM). We found that heterogeneities in the PEDOT:PSS films (interconnected and large PEDOT- and PSS-rich domains) obtained from high molecular weight and high dispersity PSS led to higher charge mobility (μOECT ~4 cm 2 V –1 s –1 ) and hence transconductance. Furthermore, these studies highlight the importance of considering molecular weight and size distribution in organic mixed ionic-electronic conductor, and could pave the way to designing high performance organic electronics for biological interfaces.

Influence of misfit dislocations on ionic conductivity at oxide interfaces

Mismatched complex oxide thin films and heterostructures have gained significant traction for use as electrolytes in intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells, wherein interfaces exhibit variation in ionic conductivity as compared to the bulk. Although misfit dislocations present at interfaces in these structures impact ionic conductivity, the fundamental mechanisms responsible for this effect are not well understood. To this end, a kinetic lattice Monte Carlo (KLMC) model was developed to trace oxygen vacancy diffusion at misfit dislocations in SrTiO 3 /BaZrO 3 heterostructures and elucidate the atomistic mechanisms governing ionic diffusion at oxide interfaces. The KLMC model utilized oxygen vacancy migration energy barriers computed using molecular statics. While some interfaces promote oxygen vacancy diffusion, others impede their transport. Fundamental factors such as interface layer chemistry, misfit dislocation structure, and starting and ending sites of migrating ions play a crucial role in oxygen diffusivity. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were further performed to support qualitative trends for oxygen vacancy diffusion. Overall, the agreement between KLMC and MD is quite good, though MD tends to predict slightly higher conductivities, perhaps a reflection of nuanced structural relaxations that are not captured by KLMC. The current framework comprising KLMC modeling integrated with molecular statics offers a powerful tool to perform mechanistic studies focused on ionic transport in thin film oxide electrolytes and facilitate their rational design.

Optimizing protic ionic liquid electrolyte for pre-intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene supercapacitor electrodes

Electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) are of increasing importance in energy storage from renewable sources. The properties of the electrode and electrolyte materials influence the energy and power densities of EDLCs. We examined the specific capacitance and ion dynamics of a protic ionic liquid confined in pre-intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Our electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the creation of a protic ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-H-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (BuIMH-NTf2), using a mixture of ionic liquid, 1-butyl imidazole (BuIM), and salt, bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (HNTf2), in a ratio of 0.8:0.2 led to the optimal capacitance. Remarkably, quasi-elastic neutron scattering measurements revealed increased particle mobility at this composition, attributed to the more efficient accumulation of BuIMH + on the electrode surface. This deposit of additional ions results in fewer BuIM molecules away from the surface, enhancing their mobility due to reduced crowding. This composition-dependent electrochemical behavior will guide the formulation of more efficient protic ionic liquid systems, enabling faster ion transport in energy storage devices.

Four-Dimensional Quasielastic Neutron Scattering (4D-QENS) Analysis of Correlated Ionic Conduction in Sr⁢Cl2

Methods of elucidating the mechanisms of fast-ion conduction in solid-state materials are pivotal for advancements in energy technologies such as batteries, fuel cells, sensors, and supercapacitors. In this study, we examine the ionic conduction pathways in single crystal Sr⁢Cl2, which is a fast-ion conductor above 900 K, using four-dimensional quasielastic neutron scattering (4D-QENS). We explore both coherent and incoherent neutron scattering at temperatures above the transition temperature into the superionic phase to explore the correlated motion of hopping anions. Refinements of the incoherent QENS yield residence times and jump probabilities between lattice sites in good agreement with previous studies, confirming that ionic hopping along nearest-neighbor directions is the most probable conduction pathway. However, the coherent QENS reveals evidence of de Gennes narrowing, indicating the importance of ionic correlations in the conduction mechanism. This highlights the need for improvements both in the theory of ionic transport in fluorite compounds and the modeling of coherent 4D-QENS in single crystals.

Ferri-ionic coupling in Cu In P 2 S 6 nanoflakes: Polarization states and controllable negative capacitance

We consider nanoflakes of van der Waals ferrielectric Cu In P 2 S 6 covered by an ionic surface charge and reveal the appearance of polar states with a relatively large polarization of approximately 5 µC/ cm 2 and stored free charge of around 10 µC/ cm 2 , which can mimic “midgap” states associated with a surface-field-induced transfer of Cu and/or In ions in the van der Waals gap. The change in the ionic screening degree and mismatch strains induce a broad range of the transitions between paraelectric phase, antiferroelectric, ferrielectric, and ferri-ionic states in Cu In P 2 S 6 nanoflakes. The states’ stability and/or metastability is determined by the minimum of the system free energy consisting of electrostatic energy, elastic energy, and a Landau-type four-well potential of the ferrielectric dipole polarization. The possibility of governing the transitions by strain and ionic screening can be useful for controlling the tunneling barrier in thin-film devices based on Cu In P 2 S 6 nanoflakes. Additionally, we predict that the Cu In P 2 S 6 nanoflakes reveal features of the controllable negative capacitance effect, which make them attractive for advanced electronic devices, such as nanocapacitors and gate oxide nanomaterials with reduced heat generation. Effect of ionic disorder on the principal shock Hugoniot

Here, the effect of ionic disorder on the principal Hugoniot is investigated using multiple scattering theory to very high pressure (Gbar). Calculations using molecular dynamics to simulate ionic disorder are compared to those with a fixed crystal lattice, for both carbon and aluminum. For the range of conditions considered here we find that ionic disorder has a relatively minor influence. It is most important at the onset of shell ionization and we find that, at higher pressures, the subtle effect of the ionic environment is overwhelmed by the larger number of ionized electrons with higher thermal energies.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of ionic reorganization near biological membrane interfaces

Electrical signals in excitable cells involve spatially localized ionic fluxes through ion channels and pumps on cellular lipid membranes. Common approaches to understand how these fluxes spread assume that the membrane and the surrounding electrolyte comprise an equivalent circuit of capacitors and resistors, which ignores the localized nature of transmembrane ion transport, the resulting ionic gradients and electric fields, and their spatiotemporal relaxation. Here, we consider a model of localized ion pumping across a lipid membrane, and use theory and simulation to investigate how the electrochemical signal propagates spatiotemporally in and out of plane along the membrane. The localized pumping generates long-ranged electric fields with three distinct scaling regimes along the membrane: a constant potential near-field region, an intermediate monopolar region, and a far-field dipolar region. Upon sustained pumping, the monopolar region expands radially in plane with a steady speed that is enhanced by the dielectric mismatch and the finite thickness of the lipid membrane. For unmyelinated lipid membranes in physiological settings, we find remarkably fast propagation speeds of ∼ 40 m / s , allowing faster ionic reorganization compared to bare diffusion. Together, our paper shows that transmembrane ionic fluxes induce transient long-ranged electric fields in electrolyte solutions, which may play hitherto unappreciated roles in biological signaling. Ionic Polymers Under Dynamic Conditions

Combining neutron scattering tools and exascale molecular dynamics simulations, research was carried out to resolve the structure and motion of ionic polymers under dynamic conditions. Ionizable polymers constitute a key component in current and potential transformative lightweight energy generation and storage devices. However, the inherent segregation of these polymers to ionic clusters and non-ionic domains, or clusters, that on one hand enables their function, confines the dynamics of the polymer chains, leading to the formation of far-from equilibrium states. These non-equilibrium states morph under in situ conditions, affecting the performance-longevity-safety-cost foundation that underlines the use of these polymers. On route to controlling the assemblies of ionizable polymers into stable functional materials, the research focused on a) understanding the inherent confinement of the polymer chains by the ionic clusters and b) resolving of the response of these polymers to flow fields that are integral to the processing and function of these macromolecules.

How alkyl branching shapes structure in imidazolium and pyrrolidinium NTf 2 ionic liquids

High-energy X-ray scattering experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were carried out on ionic liquids (ILs) consisting of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium and 1-alkyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium cations. These cations were paired with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide anions and identical alkyl tails were used for both cationic species. The goal of this work is to investigate how the nanoscale structure of the ionic liquid changes with the length and with the degree of branching of the alkyl tail, for ILs having a common anion. We investigate spatial correlations in the intermolecular region, focusing on the intrinsic charge-charge interactions that characterize all ionic liquids, as well as the nanoscale domain segregation that is present in IL species with significant nonpolar components.

Li 2 GeS 3 : Lithium Ionic Conductor with an Unprecedented Structural Type

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used in electric vehicles, mobile electronic devices, and large-scale stationary energy storage systems. However, their liquid electrolytes present significant safety concerns due to their inherent flammability. To address this, the focus has shifted toward all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) utilizing inorganic solid electrolytes that promise enhanced safety. In this work, we report the discovery of a new crystal structural type of Li-ion conductor, Li 2 GeS 3 , with a unique structure, synthesized by a solid-state reaction from Li 2 S and GeS 2 . It was first reported in 2000 with an orthorhombic unit cell, but its detailed crystal structure remains veiled. Here, we have unveiled its structure for the first time, employing an ab initio structure determination technique from powder X-ray and time-of-flight neutron diffraction data. The compound has an unprecedented crystal structural type with a hexagonal $P6_1$ symmetry and a unit cell of α = 6.79364(4) Å and c = 17.90724(14) Å. Its structure is comprised of a distorted hexagonal close-packed arrangement of sulfur anions with three asymmetric metal atoms: Li1, Li2, and Ge are in tetrahedral cavities surrounded by sulfur atoms. The ionic conductivity of Li 2 GeS 3 was measured to be 1.63 × 10 –8 S cm –1 at 303 K and 2.45 × 10 –7 S cm –1 at 383 K. Bond valence energy landscape calculations revealed three-dimensional lithium diffusion pathways within the structure. This novel crystal structure in Li 2 GeS 3 holds the potential for developing high-performance ionic conductors through suitable chemical substitution and offers valuable insights into designing new ionic conductors for ASSBs.

Synthesis of Ionic Ultramicroporous Polymers for Selective Separation of Acetylene from Ethylene

The design of highly stable and efficient porous materials is essential for developing breakthrough hydrocarbon separation methods based on physisorption to replace currently used energy-intensive distillation/absorption technologies. Efforts to develop advanced porous materials such as zeolites, coordination frameworks, and organic polymers have met with limited success. Here, a new class of ionic ultramicroporous polymers (IUPs) with high-density inorganic anions and narrowly distributed ultramicroporosity is reported, which are synthesized by a facile free-radical polymerization using branched and amphiphilic ionic compounds as reactive monomers. A covalent and ionic dual-crosslinking strategy is proposed to manipulate the pore structure of amorphous polymers at the ultramicroporous scale. The IUPs exhibit exceptional selectivity (286.1–474.4) for separating acetylene from ethylene along with high thermal and water stability, collaboratively demonstrated by gas adsorption isotherms and experimental breakthrough curves. Modeling studies unveil the specific binding sites for acetylene capture as well as the interconnected ultramicroporosity for size sieving. Finally, the porosity-engineering protocol used in this work can also be extended to the design of other ultramicroporous materials for the challenging separation of other key gas constituents.

Ionic Modulation at the LaAlO 3 /KTaO 3 Interface for Extreme High-Mobility Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

Due to the coexistence of many emergent phenomena, including 2D superconductivity and a large Rashba spin-orbit coupling, 5d transition metal oxides-based two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) have been prospected as one of the potential intrants for modern electronics. However, despite the lighter electron mass, the mobility of carriers, a key requisite for high-performance devices, in 5d-oxides devices remains far behind their 3d-oxides analogs. The carriers’ mobility in these oxides is significantly hampered by the inevitable presence of defects. Here, in this study, very high mobility (≈22 650 cm 2 V –1 s –1 ) of 5d-2DES confined at the LaAlO 3 /KTaO 3 interface is reported. The high mobility, which is beyond the values observed in SrTiO 3 2DESs in the same carrier-density range, is achieved using the ionic-liquid gating at room temperature. The authors postulate that the ionic-liquid gating affects the oxygen vacancies and efficiently reduces any disorder at the interface. Investigating density and mobility in a broad range of back-gate voltage, the authors reveal that the mobility follows the power-law µ ∝ n 1.2 , indicating the very high quality of ionic-liquid-gated LaAlO 3 /KTaO 3 devices, consistent with the postulate. Furthermore, the analysis of the quantum oscillations confirms that the high-mobility electrons occupy the electronic sub-bands emerging from the Ta:5d orbitals of KTaO 3 .
