Flexible Fully-Decoupled Nuclear Plants with Thermal Energy Storage - Technoeconomic Optimization

New nuclear power plants may be one of the technologies for future zero carbon electricity production. These future systems will however also need significant flexibility to cope with fluctuating demand and large share of intermittent renewable supply, rather than running in conventional baseload generation. The present work explores the use of thermal energy storage (TES) as a buffer between the reactor heat and its conversion to electricity, enabling flexible operation of nuclear plants. The focus is on maximizing flexibility, ideally as full decoupling of the nuclear and power cycle islands, as well as on system efficiency in various modes. A system design presented for a high temperature gas cooled reactor (HTGR) presents a slightly complex solution, as separate high- and low-temperature TES systems are required in order to cover the extended temperature range. Although this configuration imposes certain limitations on the discharge system configuration, it also presents the opportunity to design a more efficient system. For this case in particular, a steam reheat cycle is advantageous. Dynamic models were developed for the decoupled system in order to generate insights into aspects of off design operation and system control. A technoeconomic analysis, furthermore, provides sizing and costing of the component, followed by size and dispatch economic optimization considering energy arbitrage. This optimization shows that in all explored markets, the addition of TES system with the proposed configuration results in positive impact on project net present value. Further sensitivity analyses show impact of multiple inputs and possible technical limitations.

The onset distribution of rotating m , n = 2 , 1 tearing modes and its consequences on the stability of high-confinement-mode plasmas in DIII-D

Abstract Analysis of a multi-scenario database of over 13 000 DIII-D H-mode discharges shows that the m , n = 2 , 1 magnetic islands are dominantly pressure gradient driven, stochastically triggered non-linear instabilities at all edge safety factor ( q 95 ) values. The instability onset time closely follows the exponential distribution in intermediate and high q 95 scenarios and is characterized by near constant onset rate ( λ ), in accordance with Poisson-point processes. This implies that the plasmas are operated in marginally stable conditions, characterized by a small threshold for instability growth and variations in the trigger amplitude and/or the stabilizing mechanisms with temporally uniform random distribution in this database. While the majority of the tearing modes occur in the first current-profile relaxation time of the β N flattop, constant λ throughout the β N flattop shows that the tearing onset is insensitive to the evolution of the equilibrium current profile. In low q 95 scenarios, where a large fraction of the plasmas are operated at low torque, λ increases over the course of the β N flattop, showing that these plasmas evolve toward more unstable conditions. The onset rate rapidly increases with β N , while it does not show a clear dependence on the current gradient at the mode rational surface. Overall, these observations support that the majority of the analyzed 2,1 tearing modes are non-linear, neoclassically driven instabilities and classical stability does not play a dominant role in their onset.

Power Hardware-in-the-Loop Interfaces for Inverter-Based Microgrid Experiments Including Transitions: Preprint

Microgrids continue to proliferate, particularly those that rely on inverter-based resources as the microgrid's voltage and frequency leader. Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations can de-risk microgrid deployments, and therefore we need power-hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) interfaces for grid-forming (GFM) inverters to enable simulations of seamless transitions between islanded and grid-connected operation. Such microgrid interfaces are particularly challenging to model when the inverters need to switch modes, i.e., between grid-following (GFL) and GFM as the microgrid transitions between grid-connected and islanded operation. This paper presents two PHIL interfaces for such microgrids and the preliminary experimental results: One interface is suitable for those who have access to a power amplifier that can operate as a controllable current source, and the other is for those who need a solution that uses a voltage-mode power amplifier.

Triggering of tearing instability by impurity radiation through resistive interchange reversal in a tokamak

Abstract Recent MHD simulations find that the reversal of the local resistive interchange parameter D R from negative to positive due to impurity radiation cooling is able to linearly destabilize the resistive tearing mode (TM) growth in a tokamak above a threshold in impurity level. A layer of perturbed Pfirsch–Schlüter current density and resistivity are also induced by the impurity radiation, which further govern the TM growth and saturation in the nonlinear stage. The impurity threshold and the TM growth strongly depend on the parallel thermal conductivity, and such a dependence derives from the impact on D R of the fast parallel thermal equilibration along the helical magnetic field lines.

Networked Microgrids for Improved Resilient Operation: A Case Study in Adjuntas Puerto Rico

This paper presents a case study of a network microgrid orchestrator designed to allow coordinated operation of microgrids. Through Control Hardware in the Loop (CHIL), the proposed microgrid orchestrator was validated using, as case study two community-owned microgrids in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico. These two microgrids in Adjuntas were designed to provide affordable and reliable access to electricity to 14 businesses located in the town square. In its current design, these two microgrids operate independently from each other. This paper studies how networking them would increase their resiliency metrics while operating as an island. A distributed optimization is implemented in the microgrid orchestrator due to its superior scalability compared to centralized approach as well as to maintain data privacy. Two operational modes are considered in this study to showcase the advantages of networking microgrids: a) normal island, and b) degraded island. CHIL simulations are performed to validate the proposed microgrid orchestrator. CHIL results show meaningful resiliency improvements obtained by networking microgrids during contingencies such as loss of PV generation.

Effects of edge-localized electron cyclotron current drive on edge-localized mode suppression by resonant magnetic perturbations in DIII-D

Abstract According to recent DIII-D experiments (Logan et al 2024 Nucl. Fusion 64 014003), injecting edge localized electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) in the counter-plasma-current (counter- I p ) direction reduces the n = 3 resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) current threshold for edge-localized mode (ELM) suppression, while co- I p ECCD during the suppressed ELM phase causes a back transition to ELMing. This paper presents nonlinear two-fluid simulations on the ECCD manipulation of edge magnetic islands induced by RMP using the TM1 code. In the presence of a magnetic island chain at the pedestal-top, co- I p ECCD is found to decrease the island width and restore the initially degraded pedestal pressure when its radial deposition location is close to the rational surface of the island. With a sufficiently strong co- I p ECCD current, the RMP-driven magnetic island can be healed, and the pedestal pressure fully recovers to its initial ELMing state. On the contrary, counter- I p ECCD is found to increase the island width and further reduce the pedestal pressure to levels significantly below the peeling-ballooning-mode limited height, leading to even stationary ELM suppression. These simulations align with the results from DIII-D experiments. However, when multiple magnetic island chains are present at the pedestal-top, the ECCD current experiences substantial broadening, and its effects on the island width and pedestal pressure become negligible. Further simulations reveal that counter- I p ECCD enhances RMP penetration by lowering the penetration threshold, with the degree of reduction proportional to the amplitude of ECCD current. For the ∼1 MW ECCD in DIII-D, the predicted decrease in the RMP penetration threshold for ELM suppression is approximately 20%, consistent with experimental observations. These simulations indicate that edge-localized ECCD can be used to either facilitate RMP-driven ELM suppression or optimize the confinement degradation.

MULTIWAVELENGTH ANALYSIS OF A SOLAR FLARE ON 2002 APRIL 15

We carried out a multiwavelength analysis of the solar limb flare on 2002 April 15. The observations all indicate that the flare occurred in an active region with an asymmetric dipole magnetic configuration. The earlier conclusion that magnetic reconnection is occurring in a large-scale current sheet in this flare is M e r supported by these observations: (1) Several bloblike sources, seen in RHESSI 12-25 keV X-ray images later in the flare, appeared along a line above the flare loops. These indicate the continued presence of the current sheet and are likely to be magnetic islands in the stretched sheet produced by the tearing-mode instability. (2) A cusplike structure is seen in Nobeyama Radioheliogiaph (NoRH) 34 GHz microwave images around the time of the peak flare emission. We quantitatively demonstrate that the X-ray-emitting thermal plasma seen with RHESSI had a higher temperature than the microwave-emitting plasma seen with NoRH. Since the radio data preferentially see cooler thermal plasma, this result is consistent with the picture in which energy release occurs at progressively greater heights and the hard X-rays see hot new loops while the radio sees older cooling loops. The kinetic energy of the coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with this flare was found to be about 1 order of magnitude less than both the thermal energy in the hot plasma and the nonthermal energy carried by the accelerated electrons in the flare, as deduced from the RHESSI observations. This contrasts with the higher CME kinetic energies typically deduced for large flares.

Spectroscopy of Pluto, 380-930 Nm at Six Longitudes

We have obtained spectra of the Pluto-Charon pair (unresolved) in the wavelength range 380-930 nm with resolution approx..450 at six roughly equally spaced longitudes. The data were taken in May and June, 2014, with the 4.2-m Isaac Newton Telescope at Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory in the Canary Islands, using the ACAM (auxiliary-port camera) in spectrometer mode, and using two solar analog stars. The new spectra clearly show absorption bands of solid CH4 at 620, 728, and 850-910 nm, which were known from earlier work. The 620-nm CH4 band is intrinsically very weak, and its appearance indicates a long optical path-length through the ice. This is especially true if it arises from CH4 dissolved in N2 ice. Earlier work (Owen et al. Science 261, 745, 1993) on the near-infrared spectrum of Pluto (1-2.5 microns) has shown that the CH4 bands are shifted to shorter wavelengths because the CH4 occurs as a solute in beta-phase crystalline N2. The optical path-length through the N2 crystals must be on the order of several cm to produce the N2 band observed at 2.15 microns. The new spectra exhibit a pronounced red slope across the entire wavelength range; the slope is variable with longitude, and differs in a small but significant way from that measured at comparable longitudes by Grundy & Fink (Icarus 124, 329, 1996) in their 15-year study of Pluto's spectrum (500-1000 nm). The new spectra will provide an independent means for calibrating the color filter bands on the Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC) (Reuter et al. Space Sci. Rev. 140, 129, 2008) on the New Horizons spacecraft, which will encounter the Pluto-Charon system in mid-2015. They will also form the basis of modeling the spectrum of Pluto at different longitudes to help establish the nature of the non-ice component(s) of Pluto's surface. It is presumed that the non-ice component is the source of the yellow-red coloration of Pluto, which is known to be variable across the surface.
