Manipulation of the orbital angular momentum of soft X-ray beams by consecutive diffractive optics

Production and manipulation of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of coherent soft X-ray beams is demonstrated utilizing consecutive diffractive optics. OAM addition is observed upon passing the beam through consecutive fork gratings. Here, the OAM of the beam was found to be decoupled from its spin angular momentum (SAM). Practical implementation of angular momentum control by consecutive devices in the X-ray regime opens new experimental opportunities, such as direct measurement of the beam’s OAM without resorting to phase-sensitive techniques, including holography. OAM analyzers utilizing fork gratings can be used to characterize the beams produced by synchrotron and free electron lasers sources; they can also be used in scattering experiments.

Colorado Elevation Gradient Snowmelt Manipulation Plant Phenology 2017-2018

This dataset includes observations of plant phenology at five locations along an elevation gradient in Crested Butte, Colorado. Observations occurred over the years 2017 and 2018. Observations taken in 2018 are associated with an experimental early snowmelt manipulation. The file PhenologyData_complete.txt contains raw data of phenology observations for each year, at each site, for each species within 1mX1m subplots. The file Phenology Data Package.docx contains information about sites, plots, and plant phenophases. These observations were taken to assess the temporal impact of early snowmelt perturbations on plant growth in the East River Valley. These data can be used to inform when and where plants may be using water resources throughout the season and how the phenology of plant communities in the watershed may respond to early snowmelt.

Status of the laser manipulations of H- beam at J-PARC

The laser manipulations of H- ion beam by single or double neutralization is a very promising technique and highly essential to utilized in accelerator processes such as stripping, pulse chopping, collimation, extraction, and beam diagnostics for the present and future high-intensity proton accelerators. At J-PARC, we are preparing for a POP (Proof-of-Principle) demonstration 400 MeV H- stripping by using only lasers. A prototype YAG laser system and a laser cavity system to reduce the laser power are being developed through 3 MeV H- neutralization studies. Fermilab utilizes H- neutralization at 0.75 MeV by establishing a laser Notcher system for a gap in the H- pulse needed for a clean beam extraction from the ring. To minimize the laser power and maximize the interaction efficiency are common issue at both laboratories. Under the US-Japan collaboration for high-intensity neutrino beam, we are closely working to establish recycling/reusing of seed laser pulses to reduce a size of the laser system. In parallel, we have also developed non-destructive beam diagnostic systems at lower H- energy of 3 MeV, which will be implemented to the 400 MeV as well as easily applicable to the Fermilab linac including PIP-II linac. Installation of the laser system at J-PARC linac for 400 MeV H- stripping is ongoing to start the POP experimental study in 2023.

Combined Coherent Manipulation and Single-Shot Measurement of an Electron Spin in a Quantum Dot (Final Technical Report)

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising candidates to act as single-photon sources and/or quantum bits in future optical quantum information applications. Their excellent optical properties such as high brightness, single-photon purity, and narrow linewidth have potential utility in many areas. One challenge is to control the energy levels of the QD without using a magnetic field. The AC Stark effect offers the opportunity to do this. We have demonstrated record-large AC Stark shifts of the energy states of a single charged QD. We showed that the shifts can be applied in a spin-selective manner by controlling the polarization of the laser producing the AC Stark effect. In order to characterize the effect, we developed a novel spectral filtering scheme to discriminate the high-power AC Stark laser from the QD fluorescence. We also developed a compact, low-cost, homemade polarimeter to help control the polarization of the AC Stark laser, which enabled the spin selectivity of the AC Stark effect. With the practical capabilities thus developed, we learned that the spin-selective AC Stark effect causes electron spin pumping, which in turn causes nuclear spin pumping via the hyperfine interaction. The nuclear spin pumping causes a mean field Zeeman interaction between the nuclear spin ensemble and the electron trapped in the QD, resulting in the so-called Overhauser shift. The magnitude of the Overhauser shift and the measured linewidth of the QD’s optical transitions enabled characterization of the mean nuclear spin polarization and fluctuations. The potentially rapid (ns-scale) control of the QD energy levels and nuclear spin polarization will enable measurements of electron and nuclear spin polarization in the absence of any real magnetic field, which is a completely unique capability. The ability to rapidly apply a spin-selective AC Stark effect in the presence of a weak real magnetic field will allow control of the polarization selection rules of the transitions, enabling all single-qubit operations on the electron spin, i.e., initialization, coherent manipulation, and quantum non-demolition measurement.

Another Set of Python Tools for Visualizing and Manipulating Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Data: Descriptions and Examples

The GP-SANS, Bio-SANS and EQ-SANS instruments at ORNL utilize drtsans for data reduction. drtsans is built on Python, and it can be run using python scripts and Jupyter notebooks. The flexibility afforded by Python makes it possible to incorporate additional actions into the scripts used for data reduction, such as analysis and visualization. Here, a new set of tools for visualizing and manipulating SANS data that can be incorporated into the data reduction scripts for the ORNL SANS instruments, or employed during post–processing, is presented that expands the capabilities of the two previously-released tool sets.

Atomic Manipulation of Single Erbium on GaAs(110): From Adatom Motion to Creation and Control of Bistable Substitutions

We demonstrate atomic-scale control over the position and configuration of single erbium (Er) atoms at the GaAs(110) surface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). By applying voltage pulses from the STM tip, we drive Er adatoms to move sequentially among three distinct adsorption sites and controllably substitute into Ga lattice sites. The resulting substitutional Er atoms exhibit two isoelectronic configurations that differ by less than one angstrom in lateral position and can be reversibly switched by additional voltage pulses. Differential conductance spectroscopy shows differences in the unoccupied local electronic states for the two substitutional configurations, and an absence of mid-gap states. Preliminary density functional theory (DFT) calculations support these findings, identifying the most stable adsorption and substitutional sites, their relative binding energies, charge states, and local density of states (LDOS) characteristics. Together, the experimental and theoretical results establish a method for precise, reversible manipulation of rare-earth dopants at semiconductor surfaces, opening a pathway to engineer atomic-scale quantum and optoelectronic functionalities.

Manipulation of glycogen and sucrose synthesis increases photosynthetic productivity in cyanobacteria

Photosynthetic productivity is limited by low energy conversion efficiency in naturally evolved photosynthetic organisms, via multiple mechanisms that are not fully understood. Here we show evidence that extends recent findings that cyanobacteria use “futile” cycles in the synthesis and degradation of carbon compounds to dissipate ATP. Reduction of the glycogen cycle or the sucrose cycle in the model cyanobacterium Synechocystis 6803 led to redirection of cellular energy toward faster growth under simulated outdoor light conditions in photobioreactors that was accompanied by higher energy charge [concentration ratio of ATP/(ATP + ADP)]. Such manipulation of energy metabolism may have potential in engineering microalgal chassis cells to increase productivity of biomass or target metabolites.

RNAi-Mediated Manipulation of Cuticle Coloration Genes in Lygus hesperus Knight (Hemiptera: Miridae)

Cuticle coloration in insects is a consequence of the accumulation of pigments in a species-specific pattern. Numerous genes are involved in regulating the underlying processes of melanization and sclerotization, and their manipulation can be used to create externally visible markers of successful gene editing. To clarify the roles for many of these genes and examine their suitability as phenotypic markers in Lygus hesperus Knight (western tarnished plant bug), transcriptomic data were screened for sequences exhibiting homology with the Drosophila melanogaster proteins. Complete open reading frames encoding putative homologs for six genes (aaNAT, black, ebony, pale, tan, and yellow) were identified, with two variants for black. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses supported preliminary annotations as cuticle pigmentation genes. In accord with observable difference in color patterning, expression varied for each gene by developmental stage, adult age, body part, and sex. Knockdown by injection of dsRNA for each gene produced varied effects in adults, ranging from the non-detectable (black 1, yellow), to moderate decreases (pale, tan) and increases (black 2, ebony) in darkness, to extreme melanization (aaNAT). Based solely on its expression profile and highly visible phenotype, aaNAT appears to be the best marker for tracking transgenic L. hesperus.

The fortedata R package: open-science datasets from a manipulative experiment testing forest resilience

The fortedata R package is an open data notebook from the Forest Resilience Threshold Experiment (FoRTE) – a modeling and manipulative field experiment that tests the effects of disturbance severity and disturbance type on carbon cycling dynamics in a temperate forest. Package data consist of measurements of carbon pools and fluxes and ancillary measurements to help analyze and interpret carbon cycling over time. Currently the package includes data and metadata from the first three FoRTE field seasons, serves as a central, updatable resource for the FoRTE project team, and is intended as a resource for external users over the course of the experiment and in perpetuity. Further, it supports all associated FoRTE publications, analyses, and modeling efforts. This increases efficiency, consistency, compatibility, and productivity while minimizing duplicated effort and error propagation that can arise as a function of a large, distributed and collaborative effort. More broadly, fortedata represents an innovative, collaborative way of approaching science that unites and expedites the delivery of complementary datasets to the broader scientific community, increasing transparency and reproducibility of taxpayer-funded science. The fortedata package is available via GitHub: https://github.com/FoRTExperiment/fortedata (last access: 19 February 2021), and detailed documentation on the access, used, and applications of fortedata are available at https://fortexperiment.github.io/fortedata/ (last access: 19 February 2021). The first public release, version 1.0.1 is also archived at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4399601 (Atkins et al., 2020b). All data products are also available outside of the package as .csv files: https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.13499148.v1 (Atkins et al., 2020c).
