Metastable oxygen emission bands

Recombination of ground-state oxygen atoms populates six different bound electronic states of molecular oxygen. Of the six optical transitions expected between the three upper states at 4 to 4.5 electron volts and the two lowest states, five have been observed in the afterglow of a conventional helium-oxygen microwave discharge in both (O-16)2 and (O-18)2, three of them for the first time in gas-phase spectra. Generation of these emissions from oxygen atoms in a system free of molecular oxygen establishes that atom recombination is the production mechanism.

Temperature dependence of the rate coefficient for charge exchange of metastable O/+//2D/ with N2

Using a data base of aeronomical parameters measured on board the Atmosphere Explorer-C satellite, temperature dependence of the reaction rate coefficient is deduced for the charge exchange of O(+)(2D) with N2. The results indicate the Explorer values determined over the temperature range from 700 to 1900 K are not in conflict with laboratory measurements made at higher temperatures.

Seasonal variations in high-latitude ozone and metastable molecular oxygen emissions - A theoretical interpretation

Comparison of photochemical calculations of atmospheric ozone between 40 and 55 km with measurements from a satellite-borne remote sensor shows agreement in the high-latitude summer hemisphere. However, in the sunlit high-latitude winter, the available data imply either a smaller water vapor mixing ratio than generally accepted or a temperature 15 - 20 K colder than contained in published model atmospheres. As with the ozone data the infrared emission in winter implies an odd oxygen loss rate smaller than predicted on the basis of standard water vapor and temperature models. The magnitude of the 1.27 micron signals and their consistency with upper stratospheric ozone data cast doubt on the large mesospheric ozone abundances deduced in independent experiments.

The growth of metastable peritectic compounds

The influence of gravitationally driven thermosolutal convection on the directional solidification of peritectic alloys is considered as well as the relationships between the solidification processing conditions, and the microstructure, chemistry, and magnetic properties of such alloys. Analysis of directionally solidified Pb-Bi peritectic samples indicates that appreciable macrosegregation occurs due to thermosolutal convection and/or Soret diffusion. A peritectic solidification model which accounts for partial mixing in the liquid ahead of the planar solidification interface and describes macrosegregation has been developed. Two-phase dendritic and banded microstructures were grown in the Pb-Bi peritectic system, refined two-phase microstructures have were observed, and candidate formation mechanisms proposed. Material handling, containment, casting, microstructural and magnetic characterization techniques were developed for the Sm-Co system. Alloys produced with these procedures are homogeneous.

Measurement of metastable N/+/1S/ 5755-A emission in the twilight thermosphere

Measurements are reported of the 5755-A emission arising from the transition N(+)(1D-1S) made at Sutherland, South Africa (32.4 deg S, 20.8 deg E). The surface brightness of the emission in mid-November 1977 decayed from approximately 5 R at 10 solar depression angle (SDA) to approximately 1 R at 15 deg SDA. By the use of these data, it has been determined that less than 5% of all N2 ionizations result in the production of N(+) ions in the 1S state. Quenching of N(+)(1S) by neutral constituents and electrons is found to be negligible above 220 km in the twilight thermosphere in November and December 1977. Measurements of the 5755-A emission therefore potentially provide a ground based means of measuring the N2 density in the twilight thermosphere.

The growth of metastable peritectic compounds

The effects of directional solidification processing on the microstructural, compositional, and magnetic properties of high-melting-temperature, commercially important alloys which form from the liquid state via peritectic or eutectic type reactions were determined. Emphasis was placed on ferromagnetic compounds of the commercially important Co-Sm and Al-Mn systems. The primary dendrite spacing for eutectic Sm2Co17/Co scaled with negative square root of V and varied from approximately 50 microns for V 20 cm/h to hundreds of microns for V 10 cm/h. Since the crystal growth mechanism was dendritic rather than cooperative, the assoicated permanent magnet properties were rather poor. Magnetization as a function of sample orientation indicates that the easy axis of magnetization was primarily along the direction of solidification for the eutectic Sm2Co17/Co and peritectic SmCo5/Sm2Co17 compositions. For the Al-Mn case, magnetization and microstructural characterization suggest isotropic, polycrystalling growth for all solidification velocities studied.

The growth of metastable peritectic compounds

The influence of gravitationally driven convection on the directional solidification of peritectic alloys was evaluated. The Pb-Bi peritectic was studied as a model solidification system. Analyses of directionally solidified Pb-Bi peritectic samples indicate that appreciable macrosegregation occurs due to thermosolutal convection and/or Soret diffusion. The macrosegregation results in sequantial change of phase and morphology as solidification progresses down the length of the sample. Banding was eliminated when furnace conditions were selected which resulted in a planar solidification interface. The directional solidification that occurs in the vicinity of the Pb-Bi peritectic isothermal was found to be isocompositional and to consist solely of the equilibrium terminal solid solution and peritectic phases on an extremely fine scale. Evidence was found to support the peritectic supercooling mechanism, but not the proposed peritectic superheat mechanism.

Electron microscopic determination of the metastable dissociation region in the system Li sub 2SiO3-SiO sub 2

Seven glasses with an alkali oxide content in the range 9.57 to 29.53 mole percent were investigated. The temperature at which the transition of microheterogeneous mixing to the condition of mutual solubility occurs on heating is found. It is found that the altered constituent composition results in the alteration in the percentage amount of the coexisting phases.

Metastable carbon in two chondritic porous interplanetary dust particles

An understanding of carbonaceous matter in primitive extraterrestrial materials is an essential component of studies on dust evolution in the interstellar medium and the early history of the Solar System. Analytical Electron Microscopy (AEM) on carbonaceous material in two Chondritic Porous (CP) aggregrates is presented. The study suggests that a record of hydrocarbon carbonization may also be preserved in these materials.

Photodissociation of metastable O2(a 1 Delta g): Implications for stratospheric O3

The potential energy curves of Saxon and Liu (1977) are used to calculate nuclear radial wave functions for O2 in the a 1 Delta g and C 3 Delta u states. Franck-Condon factors are evaluated for both bound-bound and bound-free transitions. Observational values for the radiative lifetimes of discrete vibrational levels of the C 3 Delta u state are used to place constraints on the cross section for photodissociaation of a 1 Delta g. It is argued that the cross section for the dissociation of O2(a 1 Delta g) through the C 3 Delta u state is smaller by four orders of magnitude than values required by Frederick and Cicerone (1985) to resolve the apparent discrepancy between computed and measured concentrations for O3 in the upper atmosphere.

Rate constants for the quenching of metastable O2 (1Sigma g +) molecules

The O2 (1Sigma g +) rates for CO2, H2, N2, Cl2, CO, O3, and 2,3 DMB-2 are determined by monitoring the 762-nm emission in a fast-flow-discharge chemiluminescence detection system (Leu, 1984; Leu and Smith, 1981). The results are presented in tables and graphs and briefly characterized. The rate constants (in cu cm/s x 10 to the -16th) are 4600 + or - 500 for CO2, 7000 + or - 300 for H2, 17 + or - 1 for N2, 4.5 + or - 0.8 for Cl2, 45 + or - 5 for CO, 220,000 + or - 30,000 for O3, and 6000 + or - 100 for 2,3 DMB-2. The temperature dependence of the CO2 and O3 quenching reactions at 245-362 K is found to be negligible.
