An alternate route for cellulose microfibril biosynthesis in plants

Similar to cellulose synthases (CESAs), cellulose synthase–like D (CSLD) proteins synthesize β-1,4-glucan in plants. CSLDs are important for tip growth and cytokinesis, but it was unknown whether they form membrane complexes in vivo or produce microfibrillar cellulose. We produced viable CESA-deficient mutants of the moss Physcomitrium patens to investigate CSLD function without interfering CESA activity. Microscopy and spectroscopy showed that CESA-deficient mutants synthesize cellulose microfibrils that are indistinguishable from those in vascular plants. Correspondingly, freeze-fracture electron microscopy revealed rosette-shaped particle assemblies in the plasma membrane that are indistinguishable from CESA-containing rosette cellulose synthesis complexes (CSCs). Our data show that proteins other than CESAs, most likely CSLDs, produce cellulose microfibrils in P. patens protonemal filaments. The data suggest that the specialized roles of CSLDs in cytokinesis and tip growth are based on differential expression and different interactions with microtubules and possibly Ca 2+ , rather than structural differences in the microfibrils they produce.

Structural models and functional annotations for the Sphagnum divinum proteome

This dataset contains the structural models for the primary transcripts of the Sphagnum divinum proteome. Additionally, for a subset of these proteins, sequence and structural alignment results are provided. This dataset represents the most thorough structural study of a Sphagnum species, also known as peat mosses, by providing three-dimensional atomic resolution structures of the majority of the encoded proteins as well as structural alignment results used in the application of annotating the proteome. Soil temperature and soil moisture raw data, permafrost table depths, and accompanying environmental variable data, Kenai Wildlife Refuge, 2019-2022

Data package purpose: This data package was created to contain all data used in an upcoming article, "Canopy Cover and Microtopography Control Precipitation-Enhanced Thaw of Ecosystem-Protected Permafrost." In review. This data package includes: Raw output from 19 distributed temperature profilers with a thermistor every 10 cm along a 160 cm length at a measurement interval of 15 minutes (.CSV). Raw output from two soil moisture and temperature profilers (90 cm length and 120 cm length) that took composite soil moisture readings every 15 cm along the sensor length at a measurement interval of 30 minutes (.CSV). Permafrost depths were measured annually in mid-September at DTP sensor locations (.CSV) and along an across-site transect (.CSV). Environmental variables (snow depth, canopy closure, moss depth, and elevation) for all sensor locations. Real-time kinetic (RTK) GPS points showing site microtopography (.CSV).Analysis software: Our analysis was done in Matlab. File types can be used with any software.

SPRUCE Aboveground Vegetation Coverage in Root Ingrowth Core Plots, Marcell Experimental Forest, Minnesota, August 2022

This dataset contains vegetation survey measurements from root ingrowth core plots (Määttä et al. 2025) inside SPRUCE Experiment plots at the Marcell Experimental Forest in northern Minnesota. Vegetation surveys were conducted in 0.25 meter2 plots containing root ingrowth cores on August 8th and 9th, 2022 (2022-08-08 to 2022-08-09). The warming and elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) treatments in the dataset include the full treatment gradient: +0 degrees Celsius (C) (+0 and +500 parts per million (ppm) elevated CO2), +2.25 degrees C (+0 and +500 ppm), +4.5 degrees C (+0 and +500 ppm elevated CO2), +6.75 degrees C (+0 and +500 ppm) and +9 degrees C (+0 and +500 ppm elevated CO2) for both hummocks and hollows. This dataset includes measurements of the height and absolute coverage (%) for each vascular plant and moss species, as well as organic litter and dead overstory vascular plants, and the distance from the grid center to the nearest tree and the species of the nearest tree. These data were used as species-specific aboveground plant metadata for assessing the warming and elevated CO2 response of fine roots across different peatland microtopographical features (hummocks and hollows) and plant functional types (shrub, spruce and larch). This dataset contains one data file in comma separate (.csv) format. Additional metadata are provided: one data dictionary and a file-level metadata file in comma separate (.csv) format and a user guide in PDF (*.pdf) format.

Materials Data on MoSeS by Materials Project

MoSSe is Molybdenite-derived structured and crystallizes in the orthorhombic Amm2 space group. The structure is two-dimensional and consists of one MoS2 sheet oriented in the (0, 0, 1) direction and one MoSe2 sheet oriented in the (0, 0, 1) direction. In the MoS2 sheet, Mo4+ is bonded to six equivalent S2- atoms to form distorted edge-sharing MoS6 pentagonal pyramids. All Mo–S bond lengths are 2.43 Å. S2- is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to three equivalent Mo4+ atoms. In the MoSe2 sheet, Mo4+ is bonded to six equivalent Se2- atoms to form distorted edge-sharing MoSe6 pentagonal pyramids. All Mo–Se bond lengths are 2.53 Å. Se2- is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to three equivalent Mo4+ atoms.
