High-throughput synthesis and corrosion behavior of sputter-deposited nanocrystalline Al x (CoCrFeNi) 100-x combinatorial high-entropy alloys

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are inherently complex and potentially span a vast composition space, making their research and discovery challenging. In the present study, high-throughput synthesis of an Al x (CoCrFeNi) 100-x combinatorial material library covering x = 4.5–40 atomic percent Al is achieved, using magnetron cosputtering. The effects of Al on the microstructure and corrosion behavior are investigated. With the increased amount of Al, crystal-structures of thin films transform from face-centered cubic (FCC) to body-centered cubic (BCC). Both the FCC and BCC thin films demonstrate a uniform elemental distribution. Corrosion characteristics of combinatorial samples immersed in the 3.5 wt% (wt%) NaCl solution are evaluated via electrochemical tests. Complementary X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis reveals the compositional variation of passivated films formed on the sample surface after immersion. The results show that the Al x (CoCrFeNi) 100-x HEA thin films possess outstanding corrosion-resistant properties, but the resistance diminishes with the increasing Al content. The decreased corrosion resistance is revealed to be directly related to the constituents of passivated films.

Grain boundary metastability controls irradiation resistance in nanocrystalline metals

Grain boundaries (GBs) in polycrystalline materials are powerful sinks for irradiation defects. While standard theories assume that a GB’s efficiency as a sink is defined solely by its character before irradiation, recent evidence conclusively shows that the irradiation sink efficiency is a highly dynamic property controlled by the intrinsic metastability of GBs under far-from-equilibrium irradiation conditions. In this paper, we reveal that the denuded (i.e., defect-free) zone, typically the signature of a strong sink, can collapse as irradiation damage accumulates. We propose a radiation damage evolution model that captures this behavior based on the emergence of a series of irradiation defect-enabled metastable GB microstate changes that dynamically alter the ability of the GB to absorb further damage. We show that these microstate changes control further defect absorption and give rise to the formation of a defect network that manifests itself as a net Nye-tensor signal detectable via lattice curvature experiments.

Phase Control of Nanocrystalline Inclusions in Bioprecipitated Titania with a Panel of Mutant Silica-Binding Proteins

The biomimetic route to inorganic synthesis presents an opportunity to produce complex materials with superior properties under ambient conditions and from nontoxic precursors. While there has been significant progress in using solid-binding peptides (SBPs), proteins, and organisms to produce a variety of inorganic and hybrid structures, it has been more challenging to understand the interplay of solution conditions and solid-binding peptide (SBP) sequence, structure, and self-association on synthetic outcomes. Here, we show that fusing the Car9 silica-binding peptide—but not the silaffin-derived R5 peptide—to superfolder green fluorescent protein (sfGFP) enhances the ability of micromolar concentrations of protein to induce rapid titania (TiO 2 ) precipitation from acidified solutions of tetrakis(di-lactato)-oxo-titanate (TiBALDH). TiO 2 is produced stoichiometrically and although predominantly amorphous, contains nanosized anatase and monoclinic TiO 2 (B) inclusions. Remarkably, the phase of these nanocrystallites can be tuned from about 80% TiO 2 (B) to about 65% anatase by using Car9 mutants impaired in their ability to drive the formation of higher-order sfGFP-Car9 oligomers. Our results suggest that the presentation of multiple basic side chains in an extended plane formed by SBP self-association is critical to template the formation of monoclinic crystallites and underscore the subtle influence that single or dual substitutions in dodecameric SBPs can exert on the yield and crystallinity of biomineralized inorganics.

Highly Active Rutile TiO 2 Nanocrystalline Photocatalysts

The controllable synthesis of rutile TiO 2 single crystal particles with the preferential orientation of {111} facets still remains a scientific and technological challenge. Here, we developed a facile route for fabrication of rutile TiO 2 nanorod crystals (RTiO 2 NRs) having high ratios of oxidative {111} to reductive {110} surfaces. RTiO 2 NRs were synthesized using a peroxo-titanium complex (PTC) approach, which was controlled by changing the Ti/H 2 O 2 ratio. The thus obtained RTiO 2 NRs revealed a high tendency to agglomerate through orientation-dependent attachment along the {110} facets. This resulted in an increased {111}/{110} surface ratio and led to a markedly improved photocatalytic activity of RTiO 2 NR aggregates. The reported findings illustrate the rich potential of the herein proposed facile and energy-efficient synthesis of nanostructured rutile TiO 2 -based photocatalysts.

α-Quartz Phase Stabilization, Surface Texturing, and Tunable Optical Properties of Nanocrystalline GeO 2 Films Made by Pulsed-Laser Deposition: Implications for Optical and Optoelectronic Applications

Germanium oxide (GeO 2 ) has great potential in multifunctional devices and next-generation power electronics due to its high thermal conductivity and ambipolar doping capability. However, the complexity of synthesizing the desirable polymorph with a controlled phase, surface/interface quality, microstructure, and functional properties is the main barrier to GeO 2 utilization in advanced applications. Here, in this regard, we present a method to realize the hexagonal (h) or a-quartz type GeO 2 with nano-textured surface morphology on sapphire substrates using a hybrid synthesis strategy that comprises pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and post-deposition thermal annealing. We performed a comprehensive study to investigate the effect of annealing temperature, which was varied in a wide range (600-1100 °C), on the crystal structure, phase, surface morphology, chemical stoichiometry, defect states, and optical properties of PLD-grown GeO 2 films. As-deposited GeO 2 films at 500 °C were amorphous. Upon annealing, the GeO 2 films induced an amorphous-to-crystalline phase transformation; GeO 2 films annealed at higher annealing temperatures (≥900 °C) stabilized in the hexagonal phase and demonstrated excellent crystal quality and chemical stability. Thermally activated growth process showed increased average crystallite size, which was varied in the range of 20-130 (±2) nm, while the surface roughness followed a similar trend. The spectral transmittance and band gap also increased with increasing annealing temperature. The resulting h-GeO 2 films, particularly those obtained at annealing temperatures in the 900-1100 °C range, had a higher band gap of 6.2-6.3 eV and displayed excellent optical transmittance in the visible region. Moreover, the absence of extended valence band maxima and reduced optical defect density support the quality improvement upon annealing. When considering phase-pure bulk and nanostructured GeO 2 as a possible candidate for ultra wide band gap semiconductors in cutting-edge technological applications, the results of the current work can be beneficial to realize high structural and optical quality a-quartz structured GeO 2 films.

Ultrafast Carrier Drift Transport Dynamics in CsPbI3 Perovskite Nanocrystalline Thin Films

We study the early time carrier drift dynamics in CsPbI3 nanocrystal thin films with a sub 25 ps time resolution. Prior to trapping, carriers exhibit band-like transport characteristics, which is similar to those of traditional semiconductor solar absorbers including Si and GaAs due to optical phonon and carrier scattering at high temperatures. In contrast to the popular polaron scattering mechanism, the CsPbI3 nanocrystal thin film demonstrates the strongest optical phonon scattering mechanism among other inorganic-organic hybrid perovskites, Si, and GaAs. This ultrafast dynamics study establishes a foundation for understanding the fundamental carrier drift properties that drive perovskite nanocrystal optoelectronics.
