A natural language query system for Hubble Space Telescope proposal selection

The proposal selection process for the Hubble Space Telescope is assisted by a robust and easy to use query program (TACOS). The system parses an English subset language sentence regardless of the order of the keyword phases, allowing the user a greater flexibility than a standard command query language. Capabilities for macro and procedure definition are also integrated. The system was designed for flexibility in both use and maintenance. In addition, TACOS can be applied to any knowledge domain that can be expressed in terms of a single reaction. The system was implemented mostly in Common LISP. The TACOS design is described in detail, with particular attention given to the implementation methods of sentence processing.

Risk Management for Dynamic Radioisotope Power Systems

The implementation of dynamic power conversion technology in Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) for spaceflight has potential for improved specific power and efficiency, compared with existing Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs). This proposed expansion of current RPS technology necessitates a full exploration of the requirements, goals, and concerns related to risks in developing and deploying such systems. The nature of dynamic systems also presents a new set of challenges related to the presence of moving machinery not intrinsic to traditional RTG units. A general RPS risk management methodology is outlined, which is used to identify and assess the variables and operational scenarios introducing risk throughout the design, fabrication, and system integration processes. This paper will demonstrate how mission requirements for Dynamic RPS concepts (DRPS) drive decisions throughout the development process. This work will define the standard practices for decision making within the scope of the risks associated with DRPS hardware development and deployment in sensitive spacecraft near sensitive payloads. Examples of potential risk areas are analyzed for the proposed dynamic systems, and compared to those associated with traditional RTG technologies. This analysis shows the promise for DRPS systems to elevate and extend the capabilities for power systems used in future NASA missions.

Ecological optimality in water-limited natural soil-vegetation systems. I - Theory and hypothesis

The solution space of an approximate statistical-dynamic model of the average annual water balance is explored with respect to the hydrologic parameters of both soil and vegetation. Within the accuracy of this model it is shown that water-limited natural vegetation systems are in stable equilibrium with their climatic and pedologic environments when the canopy density and species act to minimize average water demand stress. Theory shows a climatic limit to this equilibrium above which it is hypothesized that ecological pressure is toward maximization of biomass productivity. It is further hypothesized that natural soil-vegetation systems will develop gradually and synergistically, through vegetation-induced changes in soil structure, toward a set of hydraulic soil properties for which the minimum stress canopy density of a given species is maximum in a given climate. Using these hypotheses, only the soil effective porosity need be known to determine the optimum soil and vegetation parameters in a given climate.

Closed Loop Water Purification System Utilizing an Algae Membrane Photobioreactor for the International Space Station

The International Space Station (ISS) currently operates on an open-loop water purification and distribution system. This system is only 75% efficient with a 25% water loss that must be resupplied on a quarterly basis through cargo resupply missions (Pickett, M.). This system is not feasible for long-duration spaceflight missions. A closed-loop water purification system aboard the ISS can benefit water reclamation and become the water purification system for long-term space flight. The primary sub-systems integrated within the proposed closed loop system include an anaerobic digestion membrane bioreactor and an algae membrane photobioreactor. The processes mimics the abilities of natural biological systems naturally. The water that flows from the algal membrane photobioreactor is rich in nutrients providing a feed source for plants aboard the ISS or can be further processed for potable water.

Electric generators in the magnetosphere-ionosphere system

The nature and cause of electric fields in the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system and their effects in the middle atmosphere are discussed. Electric fields induced by the solar wind are reported. The equivalence between forces and electric currents and also between current closure and stress balance is described. The motions of the magnetospheric and ionospheric fluids and the electric fields of interest were determined by the balance of these forces, or equivalently by the closure of the currents. The physical nature of stresses and currents was examined.

Engineering derivatives from biological systems for advanced aerospace applications

The present study consisted of a literature survey, a survey of researchers, and a workshop on bionics. These tasks produced an extensive annotated bibliography of bionics research (282 citations), a directory of bionics researchers, and a workshop report on specific bionics research topics applicable to space technology. These deliverables are included as Appendix A, Appendix B, and Section 5.0, respectively. To provide organization to this highly interdisciplinary field and to serve as a guide for interested researchers, we have also prepared a taxonomy or classification of the various subelements of natural engineering systems. Finally, we have synthesized the results of the various components of this study into a discussion of the most promising opportunities for accelerated research, seeking solutions which apply engineering principles from natural systems to advanced aerospace problems. A discussion of opportunities within the areas of materials, structures, sensors, information processing, robotics, autonomous systems, life support systems, and aeronautics is given. Following the conclusions are six discipline summaries that highlight the potential benefits of research in these areas for NASA's space technology programs.

Spacecraft Environments Interactive: Space Radiation and Its Effects on Electronic System

The natural space environment is characterized by complex and subtle phenomena hostile to spacecraft. Effects of these phenomena impact spacecraft design, development, and operation. Space systems become increasingly susceptible to the space environment as use of composite materials and smaller, faster electronics increases. This trend makes an understanding of space radiation and its effects on electronic systems essential to accomplish overall mission objectives, especially in the current climate of smaller/better/cheaper faster. This primer outlines the radiation environments encountered in space, discusses regions and types of radiation, applies the information to effects that these environments have on electronic systems, addresses design guidelines and system reliability, and stresses the importance of early involvement of radiation specialists in mission planning, system design, and design review (part-by-part verification).

On the Sources of Methane to the Los Angeles Atmosphere

We use historical and new atmospheric trace gas observations to refine the estimated source of methane (CH4) emitted into California's South Coast Air Basin (the larger Los Angeles metropolitan region). Referenced to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) CO emissions inventory, total CH4 emissions are 0.44 +/- 0.15 Tg each year. To investigate the possible contribution of fossil fuel emissions, we use ambient air observations of methane (CH4), ethane (C2H6), and carbon monoxide (CO), together with measured C2H6 to CH4 enhancement ratios in the Los Angeles natural gas supply. The observed atmospheric C2H6 to CH4 ratio during the ARCTAS (2008) and CalNex (2010) aircraft campaigns is similar to the ratio of these gases in the natural gas supplied to the basin during both these campaigns. Thus, at the upper limit (assuming that the only major source of atmospheric C2H6 is fugitive emissions from the natural gas infrastructure) these data are consistent with the attribution of most (0.39 +/- 0.15 Tg yr-1) of the excess CH4 in the basin to uncombusted losses from the natural gas system (approximately 2.5-6% of natural gas delivered to basin customers). However, there are other sources of C2H6 in the region. In particular, emissions of C2H6 (and CH4) from natural gas seeps as well as those associated with petroleum production, both of which are poorly known, will reduce the inferred contribution of the natural gas infrastructure to the total CH4 emissions, potentially significantly. This study highlights both the value and challenges associated with the use of ethane as a tracer for fugitive emissions from the natural gas production and distribution system.

Parallel asynchronous systems and image processing algorithms

A new hardware approach to implementation of image processing algorithms is described. The approach is based on silicon devices which would permit an independent analog processing channel to be dedicated to evey pixel. A laminar architecture consisting of a stack of planar arrays of the device would form a two-dimensional array processor with a 2-D array of inputs located directly behind a focal plane detector array. A 2-D image data stream would propagate in neuronlike asynchronous pulse coded form through the laminar processor. Such systems would integrate image acquisition and image processing. Acquisition and processing would be performed concurrently as in natural vision systems. The research is aimed at implementation of algorithms, such as the intensity dependent summation algorithm and pyramid processing structures, which are motivated by the operation of natural vision systems. Implementation of natural vision algorithms would benefit from the use of neuronlike information coding and the laminar, 2-D parallel, vision system type architecture. Besides providing a neural network framework for implementation of natural vision algorithms, a 2-D parallel approach could eliminate the serial bottleneck of conventional processing systems. Conversion to serial format would occur only after raw intensity data has been substantially processed. An interesting challenge arises from the fact that the mathematical formulation of natural vision algorithms does not specify the means of implementation, so that hardware implementation poses intriguing questions involving vision science.

Theoretical study of the N2(+) Meinel system

Atomic natural orbital Gaussian basis sets and large complete-active-space self-consistent field/multireference configuration-interaction wave functions are used to determine the potential curves for the X 2Sigma(+) sub g and A 2Pi sub u states of N2(+). The dependence of the electronic transition moment between the two states on internuclear distance is accurately determined, and is shown to differ significantly from previous determinations. These theoretically determined lifetimes agree with experimental time-of-flight data within stated experimental error bars.

Knowledge acquisition from natural language for expert systems based on classification problem-solving methods

It is shown how certain kinds of domain independent expert systems based on classification problem-solving methods can be constructed directly from natural language descriptions by a human expert. The expert knowledge is not translated into production rules. Rather, it is mapped into conceptual structures which are integrated into long-term memory (LTM). The resulting system is one in which problem-solving, retrieval and memory organization are integrated processes. In other words, the same algorithm and knowledge representation structures are shared by these processes. As a result of this, the system can answer questions, solve problems or reorganize LTM.

Digital flight control systems

The design of stable feedback control laws for sampled-data systems with variable rate sampling was investigated. These types of sampled-data systems arise naturally in digital flight control systems which use digital actuators where it is desirable to decrease the number of control computer output commands in order to save wear and tear of the associated equipment. The design of aircraft control systems which are optimally tolerant of sensor and actuator failures was also studied. Detection of the failed sensor or actuator must be resolved and if the estimate of the state is used in the control law, then it is also desirable to have an estimator which will give the optimal state estimate even under the failed conditions.
