$β$-delayed neutron emission studies of 137,138 I and 144,145 Cs performed with trapped ions

A detailed study of the β-delayed neutron emission properties of 137,138 I and 144,145 Cs has been performed by confining ions in the Beta-decay Paul Trap. The daughter ions following β decay emerge from the trapped-ion cloud with negligible scattering allowing reconstruction of the recoil-ion energy from the time of flight. From this information, the neutron-emission branching ratios and neutron-energy spectra were deduced. The results for the 137 I and 144,145 Cs decays are in agreement with previous results performed using direct neutron-detection techniques. In the case of 138 I, a branching ratio of 6.18(50)% is obtained, yielding a value consistent with the more recent results, which are a factor of two larger than measurements made prior to 1978.

Feasibility study to use neutron capture for an ultralow energy nuclear-recoil calibration in liquid xenon

The feasibility of an ultra-low energy nuclear-recoil measurement in liquid xenon using neutron capture is investigated for a small (sub-kilogram) liquid xenon detector that is optimized for a high scintillation gain, and a pulsed neutron source. Further, the measurement uses the recoil energies imparted to xenon nuclei during the de-excitation process following neutron capture, where promptly emitted γ cascades can provide the nuclei with up to 0.3 keV nr of recoil energy due to conservation of momentum. A successful calibration of scintillation photon and ionization electron yields below this energy will contribute to a greater sensitivity for liquid xenon experiments in searches for light WIMPs.

New 13 C(α,n) 16 O Cross Section with Implications for Neutrino Mixing and Geoneutrino Measurements

Precise antineutrino measurements are very sensitive to proper background characterization. Here, we present an improved measurement of the 13 C(α,n) 16 O reaction cross section which constitutes significant background for large v¯ detectors. We greatly improve the precision and accuracy by utilizing a setup that is sensitive to the neutron energies while making measurements of the excited state transitions via secondary γ-ray detection. Our results shows a 54% reduction in the background contributions from the 16 O(3–, 6.13 MeV) state used in the KamLAND analysis.

Quasiparticle Couplings in Transport of Heat, Charge, and Spin for Novel Energy Materials. Final report

Understanding the microscopic processes involved in the transport and conversion of energy from the atomic-scale to the meso-scale is critical for the development of next-generation materials for energy conversion and information processing. The goal of this program was to elucidate the couplings between microscopic degrees-of-freedom of atomic vibrations, spins, and electrons, which underpin heat, charge, and spin transport. This project systematically investigated these quasi-particle interactions, using state-of-the-art neutron scattering techniques, combined with first-principles computer simulations. This research program uncovered new information and understanding, which helps to rationalize materials properties based on the interplay of their atomistic degrees of freedom.

Evaluation of Neutron Detection Technology and Analysis Techniques to Support Fukushima Daiichi Decommissioning [Poster]

Decommissioning efforts and associated fuel debris retrieval from the damaged Units 1-3 require robust methods to monitor and assure subcriticality. These include adequate detection technologies capable to withstand high gamma radiation conditions within the units; as well as analysis methods capable to provide robust signatures to assure agile criticality monitoring in situation where material distribution is changing. This poster presents overview of experimental and analytical efforts focused on evaluation of neutronbased technologies and development of real-time analysis using state-of-the art capabilities available within the 1F Fuel Retrieval and Monitoring Experiments (1FRAME) project.

A Novel Microshear Geometry for Exploring the Influence of Void Swelling on the Mechanical Properties Induced by MeV Heavy Ion Irradiation

Small disks are often the specimen of choice for exposure in nuclear reactor environments, and this geometry invariably limits the types of mechanical testing that can be performed on the specimen. Recently, shear punch testing has been utilized to evaluate changes arising from neutron irradiation in test reactor environments on these small disk specimens. As part of a broader effort to link accelerated testing using ion irradiation and conventional neutron irradiation techniques, a novel microshear specimen geometry was developed for use with heavy-ion irradiated specimens. The technique was demonstrated in pure Cu irradiated to 11 and 110 peak dpa with 10 MeV Cu ions. At 11 peak dpa, the Cu specimen had a high density of small voids in the irradiated region, while at 110 peak dpa, larger voids with an average void swelling of ~20% were observed. Micropillar and microshear specimens both exhibited hardening at 11 dpa, followed by softening at 110 dpa. The close alignment of the new microshear technique and more conventional micropillar testing, and the fact that both follow intuition, is a good first step towards applying microshear testing to a wider range of irradiated materials.

Evaluation of methods for nondestructive testing of brazed joints

Evaluation of nondestructive methods of testing brazed joints reveals that ultrasonic testing is effective in the detection of nonbonds in diffusion bonded samples. Radiography provides excellent resolutions of void or inclusion defects, and the neutron radiographic technique shows particular advantage for brazing materials containing cadmium.

Evaluation of radioisotope tracer and activation analysis techniques for contamination monitoring in space environment simulation chambers

Radioisotope measurement techniques and neutron activation analysis are evaluated for use in identifying and locating contamination sources in space environment simulation chambers. The alpha range method allows the determination of total contaminant concentration in vapor state and condensate state. A Cf-252 neutron activation analysis system for detecting oils and greases tagged with stable elements is described. While neutron activation analysis of tagged contaminants offers specificity, an on-site system is extremely costly to implement and provides only marginal detection sensitivity under even the most favorable conditions.

Analytical and Radio-Histo-Chemical Experiments of Plants and Tissue Culture Cells Treated with Lunar and Terrestrial Materials

The nature and mechanisms of the apparent simulation of growth originally observed in plants growing in contact with lunar soil during the Apollo project quarantine are examined. Preliminary experiments employing neutron activated lunar soil indicate uptake of a few elements by plants. It was found that while the preliminary neutron activation technique allowed demonstration of uptake of minerals it presented numerous disadvantages for use in critical experiments directed at elucidating possible mechanisms of stimulation.
