An analytic study on bounds for the associated Legendre functions

The bounds for the normalized associated Legendre functions P sub nm were studied to provide a rational basis for the truncation of the geopotential series in spherical harmonics in various orbital analyses. The conjecture is made that the largest maximum of the normalized associated Legendre function lies in the interval which indicates the greatest integer function. A procedure is developed for verifying this conjecture. An on-line algebraic manipulator, IAM, is used to implement the procedure and the verification is carried out for all n equal to or less than 2m, for m = 1 through 6. A rigorous proof of the conjecture is not available.

Analysis of partial-reflection data from the solar eclipse of 10 Jul. 1972

Partial-reflection data collected for the eclipse of July 10, 1972 as well as for July 9 and 11, 1972, are analyzed to determine eclipse effects on D-region electron densities. The partial-reflection experiment was set up to collect data using an on-line PDP-15 computer and DECtape storage. The electron-density profiles show good agreement with results from other eclipses. The partial-reflection programs were changed after the eclipse data collection to improve the operation of the partial-reflection system. These changes were mainly due to expanded computer hardware and have simplified the operations of the system considerably.

Estimation and detection of signals in multiplicative noise

A class of detection-estimation problems on matrix Lie groups is defined in which the observation noise is multiplicative in nature. By examining the differential versions of the hypotheses, which are bilinear in nature, it is possible to derive the relevant likelihood ratio formula and the associated optimal estimation equations for the signal given the observations and the assumption that the signal is present. These estimation equations are of interest in their own right, in that they represent a finite dimensional optimal solution to a nonlinear estimation problem and can be viewed as consisting of a Kalman-Bucy filter along with the on-line computation of the solution of the associated Riccati equation, which is driven by the observations. The usefulness of these results is illustrated via an example concerning the detection of an actuator failure in a rigid body rotational control system.

Automated nystagmus analysis

Several methods have recently been used for on-line analysis of nystagmus: A digital computer program has been developed to accept sampled records of eye position, detect fast phase components, and output cumulative slow phase position, continuous slow phase velocity, instantaneous fast phase frequency, and other parameters. The slow phase velocity is obtained by differentiation of the calculated cumulative position rather than the original eye movement record. Also, a prototype analog device has been devised which calculates the velocity of the slow phase component during caloric testing. Examples of clinical and research eye movement records analyzed with these devices are shown.

Study to design and develop remote manipulator system

Human performance measurement techniques for remote manipulation tasks and remote sensing techniques for manipulators are described for common manipulation tasks, performance is monitored by means of an on-line computer capable of measuring the joint angles of both master and slave arms as a function of time. The computer programs allow measurements of the operator's strategy and physical quantities such as task time and power consumed. The results are printed out after a test run to compare different experimental conditions. For tracking tasks, we describe a method of displaying errors in three dimensions and measuring the end-effector position in three dimensions.

Design and fabrication of prototype system for early warning of impending bearing failure

A test program was conducted with the objective of developing a method and equipment for on-line monitoring of installed ball bearings to detect deterioration or impending failure of the bearings. The program was directed at the spin-axis bearings of a control moment gyro. The bearings were tested at speeds of 6000 and 8000 rpm, thrust loads from 50 to 1000 pounds, with a wide range of lubrication conditions, with and without a simulated fatigue spall implanted in the inner race ball track. It was concluded that a bearing monitor system based on detection and analysis of modulations of a fault indicating bearing resonance frequency can provide a low threshold of sensitivity.

Modularized instrument system for turbojet engine test facilities

A new modular instrument system is being developed to handle the many channels of data commonly encountered in turbojet engine testing. Each module contains a group of transducers and all the signal conditioning, multiplexing, and digitizing electronics necessary for direct interface with a digital computer. The digital interface within each module is the same for all modules. Each module provides a controlled environment for its contents. A minicomputer in the control room gathers the data, performs some on-line calculation and display, and interfaces with a shared recording and computing system. The advantages of this system are (1) reduced manpower for system installation, setup, and checkout; (2) standardized equipment interfaces; (3) increased reliability through automatic system testing and through minimization of manual adjustments; and (4) reduced cost through minimization of wiring and simplification of control room display.

An Adaptive Technique for a Redundant-Sensor Navigation System

An on-line adaptive technique is developed to provide a self-contained redundant-sensor navigation system with a capability to utilize its full potentiality in reliability and performance. The gyro navigation system is modeled as a Gauss-Markov process, with degradation modes defined as changes in characteristics specified by parameters associated with the model. The adaptive system is formulated as a multistage stochastic process: (1) a detection system, (2) an identification system and (3) a compensation system. It is shown that the sufficient statistics for the partially observable process in the detection and identification system is the posterior measure of the state of degradation, conditioned on the measurement history.

The Use of Large Lithium-Drifted, Germanium Diodes for Gamma-Ray Spectral Measurements at Balloon Altitudes

A series of balloon-borne experiments has been initiated at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in cooperation with the Space Sciences Laboratory of the NASA G. C. Marshall Space Flight Center to determine the feasibility of using large (greater than 20 cc) lithium-drifted, germanium diodes to investigate the spectrum of atmospheric gamma rays (60 keV < E < 1.5 MeV) at altitudes corresponding to a few grams per cm (sup 2) residual atmosphere. The results of these measurements will also provide a basis for designing an appropriate shield for a multi-diode, highly directional gamma-ray spectrometer for use in astrophysical measurements. Two flights were accomplished during 1967 using the same two diodes and basic instrument package. Both flights were launched at the NCAR Scientific Balloon Flight Base, Palestine, Texas, and attained a float altitude of 117, 000 ft. The measured atmospheric gamma-ray spectrum shows at least one distinct line at 511 keV (annihilation radiation) superimposed on a continuous distribution of gamma rays attributable to both energy-degraded gamma rays and brems-strahlung photons. A second diode, encased in a passive shield of plastic and lead, shows the expected lines resulting from both neutron inelastic scattering and capture in the germanium. Data acquisition was accomplished on an event-by-event basis through the use of 512-channel, on-board ADC and word-generator circuits and a ground-based, on-line telemetry decoder. The decoder makes it possible to store the data in the memory of a modified pulse-height analyzer simultaneously with storage on magnetic tape. This provides a real-time visual observation of the data as it is accumulated and greatly facilitates preflight calibrations.
