System and method for optimal load and source scheduling in context aware homes

A controller for controlling energy consumption in a home includes a constraints engine to define variables for multiple appliances in the home corresponding to various home modes and persona of an occupant of the home. A modeling engine models multiple paths of energy utilization of the multiple appliances to place the home into a desired state from a current context. An optimal scheduler receives the multiple paths of energy utilization and generates a schedule as a function of the multiple paths and a selected persona to place the home in a desired state.

An Optimizing Space Data-Communications Scheduling Method and Algorithm with Interference Mitigation, Generalized for a Broad Class of Optimization Problems

NASA's space data-communications infrastructure-the Space Network and the Ground Network-provide scheduled (as well as some limited types of unscheduled) data-communications services to user spacecraft. The Space Network operates several orbiting geostationary platforms (the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS)), each with its own servicedelivery antennas onboard. The Ground Network operates service-delivery antennas at ground stations located around the world. Together, these networks enable data transfer between user spacecraft and their mission control centers on Earth. Scheduling data-communications events for spacecraft that use the NASA communications infrastructure-the relay satellites and the ground stations-can be accomplished today with software having an operational heritage dating from the 1980s or earlier. An implementation of the scheduling methods and algorithms disclosed and formally specified herein will produce globally optimized schedules with not only optimized service delivery by the space data-communications infrastructure but also optimized satisfaction of all user requirements and prescribed constraints, including radio frequency interference (RFI) constraints. Evolutionary algorithms, a class of probabilistic strategies for searching large solution spaces, is the essential technology invoked and exploited in this disclosure. Also disclosed are secondary methods and algorithms for optimizing the execution efficiency of the schedule-generation algorithms themselves. The scheduling methods and algorithms as presented are adaptable to accommodate the complexity of scheduling the civilian and/or military data-communications infrastructure within the expected range of future users and space- or ground-based service-delivery assets. Finally, the problem itself, and the methods and algorithms, are generalized and specified formally. The generalized methods and algorithms are applicable to a very broad class of combinatorial-optimization problems that encompasses, among many others, the problem of generating optimal space-data communications schedules.

User Preference Optimization for Oversubscribed Scheduling of NASA’s Deep Space Network

NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN) is the primary resource for communications and navigation for interplanetary space missions, for both NASA and partner agencies. Growth in mission demand, both in number of spacecraft and in data return, has led to increased loading levels on the network, and actual demand frequently exceeds network capacity. The DSN scheduling process involves peer-to-peer collaborative negotiation, which consumes significant time and resources in order to reach a baseline version of the schedule, and then to manage and agree to changes. Process delays are exacerbated by the high level of oversubscription experienced by the DSN: it is not unusual for the scheduling process to start with 20-40% more requested time can be accommodated on the available antennas. The other NASA networks make use of a static mission priority list to address a similar problem: missions are ranked in priority order, then the schedule is populated by priority from highest to lowest. Such a mechanism would not work for DSN due to the heterogeneity of the mission set, and to the time-varying mission requirements with mission phase. This paper describes an alternative approach for the DSN that addresses key problems inherent in the current process — oversubsubscription and how to “fairly” reduce it to a manageable level. The main characteristics of the new approach are the use of loading-based limits based on balancing requested time, along with priorities and user preferences as the basis for optimization criteria that can be used by new algorithms.

A data-driven linear formulation of the optimal demand response scheduling problem for an industrial air separation unit

Demand response (DR) has become a key element in balancing the power grid as the contribution of time-varying renewable power generation increases. Chemical plants are appealing candidates for DR programs as they offer large, concentrated and flexible loads. DR participation calls for frequent production rate changes over time scales that overlap with the dominant dynamics of the plant. Production scheduling should therefore consider the process dynamics explicitly. Here we present a data-driven approach for modelling the scheduling-relevant dynamics based on historical closed-loop operating data using autoregressive with extra inputs (ARX) models. We introduce a new, linear scheduling problem formulation based on the ARX representation, and demonstrate its implementation on an industrial air separation unit.

Alternative mixed integer linear programming optimization for joint job scheduling and data allocation in grid computing

This paper presents a novel approach to the joint optimization of job scheduling and data allocation in grid computing environments. We formulate this joint optimization problem as a mixed integer quadratically constrained program. To tackle the nonlinearity in the constraint, we alternatively fix a subset of decision variables and optimize the remaining ones via Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP). We solve the MILP problem at each iteration via an off-the-shelf MILP solver. Our experimental results show that our method significantly outperforms existing heuristic methods, employing either independent optimization or joint optimization strategies. We have also verified the generalization ability of our method over grid environments with various sizes and its high robustness to the algorithm setting.

Bridging Equipment Reliability Data and Risk Informed Decisions in a Plant Operation Context

Industry equipment reliability and asset management programs are essential elements that help ensure the safe and economical operation of nuclear power plants. The effectiveness of these programs is addressed in several industry-developed and regulatory programs. The Risk-Informed Asset Management (RIAM) project is tasked to develop tools in support of the equipment reliability and asset management programs at nuclear power plants. These tools are designed to create a direct bridge between component health/lifecycle data and decision making (e.g., maintenance scheduling and project prioritization). The goal of this article is to provide a guide for specific use cases that the RIAM project is targeting. We have grouped uses cases into three main areas. The first area focuses on the analysis of equipment reliability data with a particular emphasis on condition-based data, such as test/surveillance reports and component monitoring data. The second area focuses on the integration of equipment reliability into system/plant reliability models to determine system/plant health and identify the components that are critical to maintain an operational system. Lastly, the third area manages plant resources, such as maintenance activities and replacement scheduling using optimization methods. Here the primary focus is on supporting typical system engineer decisions regarding maintenance activity scheduling and component aging management. This is performed in a risk-informed context where the term “risk” is broadly constructed to include both plant reliability and economics. This framework combines data analytics tools to analyze equipment reliability data with risk-informed methods designed to support system engineer decisions (e.g., maintenance and replacement schedules, optimal maintenance posture) in a customizable workflow.

Power system restoration incorporating diverse distributed energy resources

An example system includes an aggregator configured to receive a service collaboration request and iteratively determine, based on minimum and maximum power values for DERs under its management, an optimized operation schedule. The aggregator may also be configured to iteratively determine, based on the optimized operation schedule, an estimated flexibility range for devices under its management and output an indication thereof. The system may also include a power management unit (PMU) configured to iteratively receive the indication and determine, based on a network model that includes the estimated flexibility range, a reconfiguration plan and an overall optimized operation schedule for the network. The PMU may also be configured to iteratively cause reconfiguration of the network based on the plan. The PMU and aggregator may also be configured to iteratively, at a fast timescale, cause energy resources under their management to modify operation based on the overall optimized operation schedule.

Revisiting the definition of field capacity as a functional parameter in a layered agronomic soil profile beneath irrigated maize

The soil water content at the condition of field capacity (θ FC ) is a key parameter in irrigation scheduling and has been suggested to be determined by running a synthetic drainage experiment until the flux rate (q) at the bottom of the soil profile achieves a predefined negligible value (q FC ). We question the impact of q FC on the assessment of field capacity. Moreover, calculating θ FC as the integral mean of the water content profile when q is equal to q FC is strictly valid only for uniform soil profiles. By contrast, this practice is ambiguous and biased for stratified soil profiles due to the soil water content discontinuity at the layer interfaces. In this study, the concept of field capacity was revisited and adapted to practical agronomic heuristics. By resorting to the assessment of root-zone water storage capacity (W), we envision field capacity as a functional hydraulic parameter derived from synthetic irrigation scheduling scenarios to minimize drought stress, drainage, and nitrate leachate below the root zone. A functional analysis was carried out on a 135-cm-thick layered soil profile beneath maize in eastern Nebraska. On-farm irrigation scheduling applications and agricultural practices were recorded for 20 years (2001–2020) at a daily time step. Hydrus-1D was calibrated and validated with direct measurements of the soil water retention curve and soil water content data, respectively, in each soil layer. A set of functional field capacity values was derived from 24 irrigation scheduling scenarios, and the optimal water storage capacity at field capacity (W FC ) was approximately 50 cm (corresponding to about 80% saturation in the soil profile). An average irrigation amount of 217.5 mm distributed over 21 events was obtained by using optimal irrigation scheduling, which was initiated when the matric pressure head took on a value of –700 cm and the irrigation rate was set at 1.0 cm d –1 . This irrigation practice ensured water storage at approximately the same level (ideally at W FC ) by sustaining only evapotranspiration fluxes in the uppermost portion of the root zone and by limiting excessive drainage. This protocol can be transferred to other agricultural fields.

Spot and Runway Departure Advisor

The Spot and Runway Departure Advisor (SARDA) is a research prototype of a decision support tool for ATC tower controllers to assist in manging and controlling traffic on the surface of an airport. SARDA employs a scheduler to generate an optimal runway schedule and gate push-back - spot release sequence and schedule that improves efficiency of surface operations. The advisories for ATC tower controllers are displayed on an Electronic Flight Strip (EFS) system. The human-in-the-loop simulation of the SARDA tool was conducted for east operations of Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport (DFW) to evaluate performance of the SARDA tool and human factors, such as situational awareness and workload. The results indicates noticeable taxi delay reduction and fuel savings by using the SARDA tool. Reduction in controller workload were also observed throughout the scenario runs. The future plan includes modeling and simulation of the ramp operations of the Charlotte International Airport, and develop a decision support tool for the ramp controllers.

Economic Dispatch Optimization of Multi-Unit SMR Site

With the increase of integration of variable renewable into the grid, grid resilience can be compromised without flexible electricity suppliers. Flexible operation of NPP can expand the scope of integration of new nuclear power plants in regions with high share of renewables. It also provides opportunity to increase profits through participation in ancillary services. In this research, NuScale modules are used as the case study. NuScale is an integrated pressurized water reactor with thermal power of 250 MWth. Having multiple units can provide higher flexibility in changing power levels and supplying the grid with electricity all year long. Additionally, load-following might perturbate the ordered sequence of refueling (every 24 months for NuScale). To maintain the 2 year refueling cycles, the loading patterns will need to be adjusted in a year-to-year basis, resulting in additional unnecessary costs. Another solution is to find the optimal outage schedule. This will also shift the focus of the planned outage to a more optimized predictive outages and maintenance. Results from short-term optimization (i.e., daily participation in energy and ancillary services markets) shows that average commitment to regulation down ancillary service markets during late night and early morning hours can increase revenues. Participating in upward reserves during pre-work commuting hours and early evening hours can also generate additional revenues due to high ramp up of electricity demand. Having multiple units at a single site can also help operate flexibly. Results from long-term optimization show that daily fluctuation in electric power is usually handled by few units while other units operate on base-load profile. It is possible to combine base-load operation with flexible operation to extend component remaining useful life in some units and find optimal outage schedule for the units.
