Biological Oxidation of Fe(II)-Bearing Smectite by Microaerophilic Iron Oxidizer Sideroxydans lithotrophicus Using Dual Mto and Cyc2 Iron Oxidation Pathways

Fe(II) clays are common across many environments, making them a potentially significant microbial substrate, yet clays are not well established as an electron donor. Therefore, we explored whether Fe(II)-smectite supports the growth of Sideroxydans lithotrophicus ES-1, a microaerophilic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacterium (FeOB), using synthesized trioctahedral Fe(II)-smectite and 2% oxygen. S. lithotrophicus grew substantially and can oxidize Fe(II)-smectite to a higher extent than abiotic oxidation, based on X-ray near-edge spectroscopy (XANES). Sequential extraction showed that edge-Fe(II) is oxidized before interior-Fe(II) in both biotic and abiotic experiments. The resulting Fe(III) remains in smectite, as secondary minerals were not detected in biotic and abiotic oxidation products by XANES and Mössbauer spectroscopy. To determine the genes involved, we compared S. lithotrophicus grown on smectite versus Fe(II)-citrate using reverse-transcription quantitative PCR and found that cyc2 genes were highly expressed on both substrates, while mtoA was upregulated on smectite. Proteomics confirmed that Mto proteins were only expressed on smectite, indicating that ES-1 uses the Mto pathway to access solid Fe(II). We integrate our results into a biochemical and mineralogical model of microbial smectite oxidation. This work increases the known substrates for FeOB growth and expands the mechanisms of Fe(II)-smectite alteration in the environment.

Pathways to International Coordination in Space Weather

The United Nations Committee for the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space(UN-COPUOS) in its 2022 Space Weather Expert Group report, called upon the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the InternationalSpace Environment Service (ISES) and the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) to take a leadership role in improving the global coordination of space weather activities in consultation and collaboration with other relevant actors and international organizations. The three organizations have established a framework for trusting partnership while minimizing duplication of efforts and have agreed on three distinct domains in which the particular expertise and strengths of each of the three were identified: Research and Development (COSPAR), Facilitating Integration (WMO), andServices (ISES). The next stage in building a pathway to improved coordination is to lay the same foundation with other relevant organizations and actors engaged in space weather. We will present outcomes of the first International Space Weather Coordination Forum intending to shape the future of international collaboration on space weather with the ultimate aim of increasing the community’s ability to mitigate space environment threats. We will discuss approaches to alignments of bottom-up initiatives and community-driven roadmaps with national/regional strategic planning activities and funding programs. We will also review opportunities for taking advantage ofInternational Space Weather Action Teams (ISWAT) for planning pilot projects to demonstrate the value of collaboration and coordination.

Electromagnetic Melt Processing: A Pathway to New Additive Manufacturing Technologies for Functional High-Performance Thermoplastics

In this study, we apply the electromagnetic (EM) melt processing of thermoplastics on an innovative EM field-driven powder bed fusion additive manufacturing (AM) concept for high-performance functional parts: Selective Microwave Melting/Sintering (SMM/SMS). This technique leverages the EM susceptibility of carbon nanotube-coated polymer micro-pellets to achieve rapid, localized heating and powder fusion. Thus, selective microwave melting (SMM) was used to fabricate multilayer specimens made of recycled polyphenylene sulfide (rPPS) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The resulting SMM specimens exhibited very good interlayer integrity, localized fusion at pellet boundaries, and tolerable residual porosity, indicating effective fusion and acceptable consolidation. CNT-rich interphases were retained after irradiation, generating anisotropic electrically active network pathways and enabling conductivity enhancement at low filler content. At only 1.0 wt% CNT, the specimens exhibited electrical conductivity approximately three orders of magnitude higher than neat rPPS. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed improved viscoelastic response relative to neat rPPS, while tensile testing confirmed that the SMM-processed specimens retained practical mechanical integrity despite localized voids. These results demonstrate that SMM can effectively consolidate EM susceptible thermoplastic powder beds while preserving their segregated conductive networks. This may become a scalable route for producing multifunctional thermoplastic parts with low filler loadings, tunable anisotropy, and structured materials and parts. Overall, the findings suggest that EM field-based AM can help overcome key limitations of conventional thermoplastic processing by enabling scalable, energy-efficient fabrication of nanostructured composites and expanding AM to a broader range of resins, including high-performance thermoplastics with customized functional properties.

Fire in the Arctic: Current Trends and Future Pathways

Wildland fires in the Arctic are expected to become more frequent and more severe. In recent years, extreme fire seasons have been documented across the Pan-Arctic and boreal in five of the last seven years – including large wildfires in Greenland in 2017 and 2019 over tundra and high carbon soil landscapes and an earlier start of extreme fire seasons in 2023. Future Arctic and boreal fire regimes will experience increased fire risk though the end of this century (McCarty et al., 2021, Senande-Rivera et al., 2022). The main factors affecting the severity and frequency of wildland fires are fuels (vegetated biomass and type of biomass) and fuel condition (dryness), fire weather conditions (relative humidity, drought, precipitation), and ignition (human-caused, lightning). Climate change directly influences all of these drivers, and indirectly also some human-caused ignitions.
