Polymers from Levoglucosenone and Other Anhydrosugars (CRADA Final Report)

The goal of this work is to identify promising drop-in or novel polymers that can be produced from levoglucosenone (LGO), CyreneTM, or other anhydrous sugars. LGO is a potentially important feedstock for polymers produced from renewable sources and can be produced in high yields by the company Circa from the pyrolysis of cellulose and biomass. NLR has a long history with anhydrosugars, pyrolysis and biomass-based polymers and has recently developed machine learning (ML) tools for predicting polymer properties. The DOE has recently supported efforts to identify coproducts from pyrolysis of biomass and their use in the production of performance advantaged polymers. DOE is also supporting the development of ML and molecular modeling for predicting and understanding polymer properties. NLR will leverage this expertise and experience to map out the pathways to polymers from LGO, use ML to identify the properties of novel polymers and estimate the market application space. From this effort NLR will deliver a summary report that outlines the most promising pathways based on quantitative and qualitative metrics for producing polymers from LGO.

Topics in atomic hydrogen standard research and applications

Hydrogen maser based frequency and time standards have been in continuous use at NASA tracking stations since February 1970, while laboratory work at Goddard has continued in the further development and improvement of hydrogen masers. Concurrently, experimental work has been in progress with a new frequency standard based upon the hydrogen atom using the molecular beam magnetic resonance method. Much of the hydrogen maser technology is directly applicable to the new hydrogen beam standard, and calculations based upon realistic data indicate that the accuracy potential of the hydrogen atomic beam exceeds that of either the cesium beam tube or the hydrogen maser, possibly by several orders of magnitude. In addition, with successful development, the hydrogen beam standard will have several other performance advantages over other devices, particularly exceptional stability and long continuous operating life. Experimental work with a new laboratory hydrogen beam device has recently resulted in the first resonance transition curves, measurements of relative state populations, beam intensities, etc. The most important aspects of both the hydrogen maser and the hydrogen beam work are covered.

A halo-orbit lunar station.

A relay satellite following a halo trajectory will always maintain line-of-sight contact with the earth and the moon's far side. The Integrated Program Plan for lunar exploration in the 1980s and beyond calls for a fully reusable earth-moon transportation system. The principal elements of the system are a Translunar Shuttle, a Lunar-Orbit Space Station or Halo-Orbit Space Station, and a Lunar Space Tug. It is shown that a halo-orbit space station could offer important operational and performance advantages compared to a lunar-orbit station in a second-generation lunar program.

Preliminary performance appraisal of Navy V/STOL transport and search-type airplanes using hydrogen fuel

First-cut estimates are given of the performance advantages of liquid-hydrogen-fueled, ejector wing, V/STOL aircraft designed for shipboard delivery and search-type missions. Results indicate that the use of LH2 could reduce gross weights 30 percent, empty weights 15 percent, and energy consumption 10 percent for a fixed payload and mission. If gross weight is fixed, the delivery range could be increased about 60 percent or the hover time during a search mission doubled. No analysis or discussion of the economic and operational disadvantages is presented.

Aluminized alloy boosts turbine blade life

Description of an aluminized alloy coating technique that involves first the application of a ductile, oxidation-resistant overlay, such as NiCrAl, which is then partially aluminized. The duplex protective system has performance advantages over conventional aluminide coatings in that it provides higher-temperature hot corrosion resistance over a longer service life.

A real-time optical data processing device

The design, operation, and structure of the hybrid field effect light valve, a real-time input device for application to coherent optical data processing (CODP), is described. The device consists of a sandwich of thin films that electrically control the optical birefringence of a thin (2 micrometer) liquid crystal layer. It has high resolution (greater than 100 1/mm), contrast ratio (greater than 100:1), speed (10 sec on, 15 sec off) and input sensitivity (about 0.3 ergs/sq cm) in addition to cost and size advantages. Performance data for a laboratory model are presented.

Recent developments in multiplane-multispeed balancing of flexible rotors in the United States

This paper describes current developments in the evolution of a computer-implemented balancing procedure which permits flexible rotors to be precisely balanced in a cost-effective manner. Corrections in virtually any reasonable number of planes, computed by the procedure using signals from vibration sensors at critical locations, permit rotor operation over any design speed range. Steady-state operation at undamped critical speeds has been demonstrated. Results of recent test efforts indicate that the procedure can be applied with equal effectiveness to rotors of any size. Manufacturing and overhaul cost reductions are expected to flow from its adoption, together with performance advantages from operation in hitherto restricted dynamic regimes.-

Optical communication with two-photon coherent states. II - Photoemissive detection and structured receiver performance

In a previous paper (1978), the authors developed a method of analyzing the performance of two-photon coherent state (TCS) systems for free-space optical communications. General theorems permitting application of classical point process results to detection and estimation of signals in arbitrary quantum states were derived. The present paper examines the general problem of photoemissive detection statistics. On the basis of the photocounting theory of Kelley and Kleiner (1964) it is shown that for arbitrary pure state illumination, the resulting photocurrent is in general a self-exciting point process. The photocount statistics for first-order coherent fields reduce to those of a special class of Markov birth processes, which the authors term single-mode birth processes. These general results are applied to the structure of TCS radiation, and it is shown that the use of TCS radiation with direct or heterodyne detection results in minimal performance increments over comparable coherent-state systems. However, significant performance advantages are offered by use of TCS radiation with homodyne detection. The abstract quantum descriptions of homodyne and heterodyne detection are derived and a synthesis procedure for obtaining quantum measurements described by arbitrary TCS is given.

Aerobraking for planetary missions

This paper is a description of recent work to establish the feasibility of aerobraking for planetary orbit missions. Primary emphasis is on a close (300 km) Venus orbiter in 1984. Performance advantages for close Mars orbiters and geosynchronous round trip missions are also shown. A description of the aerobraking operations scenario is given and encouraging preliminary results of an orbit determination analysis are cited. A spacecraft design is presented that features a forward aeroshield and a 9-meter aft aerobrake of 2 mil Inconel. It is shown that, with relatively minor modifications the current Venus Orbital Imaging Radar (VOIR) mission spacecraft design can be adapted to aerobraking and that the aerobraking concept enables the VOIR mission in the difficult 1986 and 1988 opportunities.

Slab-geometry Nd:glass laser performance studies

It is noted that slab-geometry solid-state lasers potentially provide significant performance improvements relative to conventional rod-geometry lasers. Experimental measurements that use an Nd:glass test-bed slab laser are presented. A comparison is made between the results and computer-model predictions of the slab-geometry approach. The computer model calculates and displays the temperature and stress fields in the slab, and on the basis of these predicts birefringence and index-of-refraction distributions. The effect that these distributions have on optical propagation is determined in a polarization-sensitive ray-tracing section of the model. Calculations are also made of stress-induced surface curvature and the resulting focusing effects. The measurements are found to be in good agreement with the computer-model predictions. It is concluded that the slab configuration offers significant laser-performance advantages in comparison with the traditional rod-laser geometry.

A review of in situ propellant production techniques for solar system exploration

Representative studies done in the area of extraterrestrial chemical production as it applies to solar system exploration are presented. A description of the In Situ Propellant Production (ISPP) system is presented. Various propellant combinations and direct applications along with the previously mentioned benefits and liens are discussed. A series of mission scenarios is presented which is studied in the greatest detail. A general description of the method(s) of analysis used to study each mission is provided. Each section will be closed by an assessment of the performance advantage, if any, that can be provided by ISPP. A final section briefly summarizes those missions which, as a result of the studies completed thus far, should see a sizable benefit from the use of ISPP.

The NASA welding assessment program

The potential cost and performance advantages of welding was understood but ignored by solar panel manufacturers in the U.S. Although NASA, DOD and COMSAT have supported welding development efforts, soldering remains the only U.S. space qualified method for interconnecting solar cells. The reason is that no U.S. satellite prime contractor found it necessary, due to mission requirements, to abandon the space proven soldering process. It appears that the proposed NASA space station program will provide an array requirement, a 10 year operation in a low Earth orbital environment, that mandates welding. The status of welding technology in the U.S. is assessed.

Symbol-stream Combiner: Description and Demonstration Plans

A system is described and demonstration plans presented for antenna arraying by symbol stream combining. This system is used to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of a spacecraft signals by combining the detected symbol streams from two or more receiving stations. Symbol stream combining has both cost and performance advantages over other arraying methods. Demonstrations are planned on Voyager 2 both prior to and during Uranus encounter. Operational use is possible for interagency arraying of non-Deep Space Network stations at Neptune encounter.

Differential versus limiter-discriminator detection of narrow-band FM

The error probability performance of differential detection of narrow-band FM is determined and compared with the analogous results for limiter-discriminator detection of the same modulation. It is shown that over a large class of benign and hostile environments, e.g., Gaussian IF filter, AWGN, partial-band noise jamming, the differential detector offers no theoretical performance advantage over the limiter-discriminator receiver with integrate-and-dump postdetection filtering.
