Coordinated design of coding and modulation systems

Work on partial unit memory codes continued; it was shown that for a given virtual state complexity, the maximum free distance over the class of all convolutional codes is achieved within the class of unit memory codes. The effect of phase-lock loop (PLL) tracking error on coding system performance was studied by using the channel cut-off rate as the measure of quality of a modulation system. Optimum modulation signal sets for a non-white Gaussian channel considered an heuristic selection rule based on a water-filling argument. The use of error correcting codes to perform data compression by the technique of syndrome source coding was researched and a weight-and-error-locations scheme was developed that is closely related to LDSC coding.

Linear minimum variance filters applied to carrier tracking

A new approach is taken to the problem of tracking a fixed amplitude signal with a Brownian-motion phase process. Classically, a first-order phase-lock loop (PLL) is used; here, the problem is treated via estimation of the quadrature signal components. In this space, the state dynamics are linear with white multiplicative noise. Therefore, linear minimum-variance filters, which have a particularly simple mechanization, are suggested. The resulting error dynamics are linear at any signal/noise ratio, unlike the classical PLL. During synchronization, and above threshold, this filter with constant gains degrades by 3 per cent in output rms phase error with respect to the classical loop. However, up to 80 per cent of the maximum possible noise improvement is obtained below threshold, where the classical loop is nonoptimum, as demonstrated by a Monte Carlo analysis. Filter mechanizations are presented for both carrier and baseband operation.

Analysis of bilinear noise models in circuits and devices

There are a number of applications in which linear noise models are inappropriate. In the paper, the use of bilinear noise models in circuits and devices is considered. Several physical problems are studied in this framework. These include circuits involving varying parameters (such as variable resistance circuits constructed using field-effect transistors), the effect of switching jitter on sampled data system performance and communication systems involving voltage-controlled oscillators and phase-lock loops. In addition, several types of analytical techniques for stochastic bilinear systems are considered. Specifically, the moment equations of Brockett for bilinear systems driven by white noise are discussed, and closed-form expressions for certain bilinear systems (those that evolve an Abelian or solvable Lie groups) driven by white or colored noise are derived. In addition, an approximate statistical technique involving the use of harmonic expansions is described.

A decision directed detector for the phase incoherent Gaussian channel

A vector digital signalling scheme is proposed for simultaneous adaptive data transmission and phase estimation. The use of maximum likelihood estimation methods predicts a better performance than the phase-locked loop. The phase estimate is shown to converge to the true value, so that the adaptive nature of the detector effectively achieves phase acquisition and improvement in performance. No separate synchronization interval is required and phase fluctuations can be tracked simultaneously with the transmission of information.

Extrasensitive phase-locked-loop circuit

Modified phase-locked loop (PLL) generates clock from incoming data signal. To minimize effects of threshold phase-detector gain variations, the PLL uses a dither oscillator, a dither band-pass filter, and correlator instead of coherent amplitude detector.

Bit-synchronizer lock detector

Circuit measures phase error that exists in phase-locked loop between clock signal recorded in data on magnetic tape and reconstructed clock signal. Circuit presents error as digital word that can be compared with predetermined threshold to indicate lock status. With simple alterations, circuit can also be used as phase detector.

Elevation scanning laser/multi-sensor hazard detection system controller and mirror/mast speed control components

The electro-mechanical and electronic systems involved with pointing a laser beam from a roving vehicle along a desired vector are described. A rotating 8 sided mirror, driven by a phase-locked dc motor servo system, and monitored by a precision optical shaft encoder is used. This upper assembly is then rotated about an orthogonal axis to allow scanning into all 360 deg around the vehicle. This axis is also driven by a phase locked dc motor servo-system, and monitored with an optical shaft encoder. The electronics are realized in standard TTL integrated circuits with UV-erasable proms used to store desired coordinates of laser fire. Related topics such as the interface to the existing test vehicle are discussed.

Pressure and velocity measurements in a three dimensional wall jet

A flat plate and a curved wall surface, intended to model a wing-flap combination in a high V/STOL configuration, were used to measure pressure and flow velocity in a freely expanding coflowing jet and a three dimensional wall jet. The effects of increasing the velocity ratio of the jet exit plane velocity to the free stream velocity were investigated. Velocity measurements were made using a two color laser Doppler velocimeter with a phase-locked loop processor. Fluctuating pressures were monitored with condenser-type microphones. Quantities measured include the width of the mixing region, the mean velocity field, turbulent intensities, and time scales. Wall and static pressure-velocity correlations and coherences are presented.

Pressure and velocity measurements in a three dimensional wall jet

In three recent papers, some results of an experimental investigation of a freely expanding coflowing jet as well as a three dimensional wall jet have been presented. A flat plate as well as a curved wall surface intended to model a wing-flap combination in a high lift V/STOL configuration have been investigated. In these papers, the ratio of the jet exit plane velocity to the free stream velocity, was 5.1. This paper explores the effects of increasing the velocity ratio. The quantities measured include the width of the mixing region, the mean velocity field, turbulent intensities and time scales. In addition, wall and static pressure-velocity correlations and coherences are presented. The velocity measurements are made using a laser Doppler velocimeter with a phase-locked loop processor. The fluctuating pressures are monitored using condenser-type microphones.

Voyager telecommunications - The broadcast from Jupiter

The means by which the data collected by the Voyager 1 mission to Jupiter were returned to earth are presented. Radio links between the earth and the spacecraft are used for the transmission of both imaging and nonimaging telemetry from the spacecraft and commands from the earth and for radiometric observations of the spacecraft and its environment. Features which have lead to vast improvements in the capability of the Voyager telecommunications system over that of previous space probes include the use of X-band rather than S-band telemetry, a dual power X-band traveling wave tube amplifier, a 3.7 m spacecraft antenna and a single channel telemetry system with concatenated coding. Communications equipment at the three ground complexes of the Deep Space Network for telemetry reception includes 64 m steerable antennas, cryogenic maser preamplifiers and a phase-lock loop receiver. Voyager 1 has met or exceeded all of its telecommunications requirements, providing a 98% data return and a total of 2 x 10 to the 11th data bits during the Jupiter encounter.

Fourier emission infrared microspectrophotometer for surface analysis. I - Application to lubrication problems

A far-infrared interferometer was converted into an emission microspectrophotometer for surface analysis. To cover the mid-infrared as well as the far-infrared the Mylar beamsplitter was made replaceable by a germanium-coated salt plate, and the Moire fringe counting system used to locate the moveable Michelson mirror was improved to read 0.5 micron of mirror displacement. Digital electronics and a dedicated minicomputer were installed for data collection and processing. The most critical element for the recording of weak emission spectra from small areas was, however, a reflecting microscope objective and phase-locked signal detection with simultaneous referencing to a blackbody source. An application of the technique to lubrication problems is shown.

A miniaturized digital telemetry system for physiological data transmission

A physiological date telemetry system, consisting basically of a portable unit and a ground base station was designed, built, and tested. The portable unit to be worn by the subject is composed of a single crystal controlled transmitter with AM transmission of digital data and narrowband FM transmission of voice; a crystal controlled FM receiver; thirteen input channels follwed by a PCM encoder (three of these channels are designed for ECG data); a calibration unit; and a transponder control system. The ground base station consists of a standard telemetry reciever, a decoder, and an FM transmitter for transmission of voice and transponder signals to the portable unit. The ground base station has complete control of power to all subsystems in the portable unit. The phase-locked loop circuit which is used to decode the data, remains in operation even when the signal from the portable unit is interrupted.

Investigations of coherent structures in free turbulent shear flows

The dynamics of large-scale coherent structures in general, and studies based on flow-visualization and phase-locked hot-wire measurements of the structures in the near fields of circular jets are considered. A study involving the nature of coherent structures under conditions of stable vortex pairing induced by controlled axisymmetric acoustic excitation reveals that azimuthal coherence initially enhanced by the excitation is lost before the end of the potential core through evolution of azimuthal lobe structures and turbulent breakdown. The evolution of a spark-induced spot in an axisymmetric turbulent mixing layer is also investigated, and the coherent Reynolds stress associated with the spot is found to be much higher than the background turbulence Reynolds stress. In addition, the state of organization in a high Reynolds number unperturbed axisymmetric mixing layer is examined, and it is shown that the shear layer is infrequently organized and the motions are intensely three-dimensional, while tearing and fractional pairing occur as frequently as complete pairing.

IUE ultraviolet spectra of V Sagittae

Ultraviolet spectra obtained by the IUE of the short-period, intrinsically variable, double-lined spectroscopic and eclipsing close binary V Sagittae are discussed. The 18 spectra measured between 1150 and 1950 A and 1850 and 3300 A over an interval of 179 days are shown to be dominated by emission features, with only Lyman alpha absorption apparent. Examination of the smooth continuum inferred for each spectrum results in a B-V color index of 0.20. The observed V magnitudes do not show a phase-locked or typical eclipsing light curve, due to intrinsic variability in the UV as well as the visible. The calibrated, reddening-corrected UV fluxes are used in an attempt to determine system temperature, but it is found that the continuum is most likely composite and variable, and thus a unique temperature assignment is impossible. The V Sge system is interpreted as possibly consisting of a primary early A, near-main-sequence star with an effective temperature of 10,000 K and a secondary thick, hot disk (temperature 17,000-300,000 K) embedding a white dwarf.

Clock synchronization of a large multiprocessor system in the presence of malicious faults

An interconnection algorithm is presented for achieving clock synchronization in a multiprocessor system. The system is assumed to be maliciously faulty, i.e., some processors are out of synchronization and lie about their clock state to other intragroup or intergroup processors. A phase-locked clock network design is proposed which groups the clocks in the system into diverse clusters. The clusters are then treated as single clock units from the perspective of the network. The algorithm minimizes the number of interconnections while permitting synchronization of large multiprocessor systems controlling time-critical applications such as aircraft, nuclear reactors and industrial processes.

Design Concept for a Rapid Automatic Sync Acquisition System

A design has been conceived for a system intended to provide rapid command sync acquisition between widely separated transmitter-receivers, such as between a spacecraft telemetry transmitter, and a ground-based receiver. Use of the system in commercial satellite communications would facilitate rapid sync acquisition between stations and regaining of data lock after interruption or equipment failure. The system is based on a rapid, automatic range-adjustment approach rather than the time-consuming cycle slipping or stepping techniques of conventional phase-locked loops.
