Polariton-assisted incoherent to coherent excitation energy transfer between colloidal nanocrystal quantum dots

Here, we explore the dynamics of energy transfer between two nanocrystal quantum dots placed within an optical microcavity. By adjusting the coupling strength between the cavity photon mode and the quantum dots, we have the capacity to fine-tune the effective coupling between the donor and acceptor. Introducing a non-adiabatic parameter, γ, governed by the coupling to the cavity mode, we demonstrate the system’s capability to shift from the overdamped Förster regime (γ $\ll$ 1) to an underdamped coherent regime (γ $\gg$ 1). In the latter regime, characterized by swift energy transfer rates, the dynamics are influenced by decoherence time. To illustrate this, we study the exciton energy transfer dynamics between two closely positioned CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots with sizes and separations relevant to experimental conditions. Employing an atomistic approach, we calculate the excitonic level arrangement, exciton–phonon interactions, and transition dipole moments of the quantum dots within the microcavity. These parameters are then utilized to define a model Hamiltonian. Subsequently, we apply a generalized non-Markovian quantum Redfield equation to delineate the dynamics within the polaritonic framework.

Quantum algorithm for polaritonic chemistry based on an exact ansatz

Abstract Cavity-modified chemistry uses strong light-matter interactions to modify the electronic properties of molecules in order to enable new physical phenomena such as novel reaction pathways. As cavity chemistry often involves critical regions where configurations become nearly degenerate, the ability to treat multireference problems is crucial to understanding polaritonic systems. In this Letter, we show through the use of a unitary ansatz derived from the anti-Hermitian contracted Schrödinger equation that cavity-modified systems with strong correlation, such as the deformation of rectangular H 4 coupled to a cavity mode, can be solved efficiently and accurately on a quantum device. In contrast, while our quantum algorithm can be made formally exact, classical-computing methods as well as other quantum-computing algorithms often yield answers that are both quantitatively and qualitatively incorrect. Additionally, we demonstrate the current feasibility of the algorithm on near intermediate-scale quantum hardware by computing the dissociation curve of H 2 strongly coupled to a bosonic bath.

Theory of magnon polaritons in quantum Ising materials

Here, we present a theory of magnon-polaritons in quantum Ising materials, and develop a formalism describing the coupling between light and matter as an Ising system is tuned through its quantum critical point. The theory is applied to Ising materials having multilevel single-site Hamiltonians, in which multiple magnon modes are present, such as the insulating Ising magnet LiHoF 4 . We find that the magnon-photon coupling strengths may be tuned by the applied transverse field, with the coupling between the soft mode present in the quantum Ising material and a photonic resonator mode diverging at the quantum critical point of the material. A fixed system of spins will not exhibit the diamagnetic response expected when light is coupled to mobile spins or atoms. Without the diamagnetic response, one expects a divergent magnon-photon coupling strength to lead to a superradiant quantum phase transition. However, this neglects the effects of damping and decoherence present in any real system. We show that damping and decoherence may block the superradiant quantum phase transition, and lead to weak coupling between the soft magnon mode and the resonator mode. The results of the theory are applied to experimental data on the model system LiHoF 4 in a microwave resonator.

Bardasis-Schrieffer polaritons in excitonic insulators

Bardasis-Schrieffer modes in superconductors are fluctuations in subdominant pairing channels, e.g., $\textit{d}$-wave fluctuations in an $\textit{s}$-wave superconductor. This Rapid Communication shows that these modes also generically occur in excitonic insulators. Further, in $\textit{s}$-wave excitonic insulators, a $\textit{p}$-wave Bardasis-Schrieffer mode exists below the gap energy, is optically active, and hybridizes strongly with photons to form Bardasis-Schrieffer polaritons, which are observable in both far-field and near-field optical experiments.

Topological Gaseous Plasmon Polariton in Realistic Plasma

Nontrivial topology in bulk matter has been linked with the existence of topologically protected interfacial states. In this work, we show that a gaseous plasmon polariton (GPP), an electromagnetic surface wave existing at the boundary of magnetized plasma and vacuum, has a topological origin that arises from the nontrivial topology of magnetized plasma. Because a gaseous plasma cannot sustain a sharp interface with discontinuous density, one must consider a gradual density falloff with scale length comparable to or longer than the wavelength of the wave. We show that the GPP may be found within a gapped spectrum in present-day laboratory devices, suggesting that platforms are currently available for experimental investigation of topological wave physics in plasmas.

Thermally tunable mid-infrared nanocavity resonance of coupled surface plasmon-phonon polaritons

Phase-change materials (PCMs) are essential for achieving tunability of metasurfaces. However, they frequently face limitations in the long-wave infrared range because of their lossy behavior. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a thermally tunable mid-infrared nanocavity resonance from coupled surface plasmon-phonon polaritons that are supported within a trilayer structure of metal-PCM layer-polar dielectric (Au-VO 2 -SiC). The top metal structures configure the Fabry-Perot cavity resonance near 840 cm −1 (11.9 µm), which is sensitively tunable and reversible with small changes in the VO 2 refractive index ∆n near below its insulator-to-metal phase transition temperature where the loss is small. The maximum resonance shift of 7.7 cm −1 is induced by a small ∆n = 0.3 over a temperature change of 3°C. The tuning figure of merit is comparable to the current standard in photonic modulator applications.

Ultrafast optical switching and power limiting in intersubband polaritonic metasurfaces

Highly nonlinear optical materials with fast third-order nonlinear optical response are crucial for the operation of all-optical photonic devices, such as switches for signal processing and computation, power limiters, and saturable absorbers. The nonlinear response of traditional optical materials is weak, thus requiring large light intensities to induce significant changes in their properties. Here we show that optical control of the coupling rate in subwavelength patch antennas coupled to intersubband transitions in multi-quantum-well semiconductor heterostructures can provide a giant third-order nonlinear response, on the order of 3.4 × <#comment/> 10 − <#comment/> 13 m 2 / V 2 , with a response time < <#comment/> 2 p s . We utilize this effect to realize intersubband polaritonic metasurfaces and demonstrate their operation as highly nonlinear saturable and reverse saturable absorbers, enabling optical power limiters and other elements for all-optical modulation and control. Our approach enables a plethora of compact, low-power, highly nonlinear devices with spectral, temporal, and structured wavefront responses tailored by design.

Stationary and non-stationary nonlinear optical spectroscopy on surface polaritons

A phenomenological theory is given for non-stationary electromagnetic surface waves propagating along the boundary plane between two homogeneous isotropic media. The description of nonlinear optical effects using shortened wave equations is demonstrated for spontaneous and simulated Raman scattering processes on surface polaritons.

Manifestation of the Fermi resonance in surface polariton spectra

The method of disturbed full internal reflection (DFIR) is used to detect and interpret the resonance splitting of the surface polariton. The effect in the spectra of oscillatory SP which are reflected by the DFIR method in Otto geometry was experimentally recorded. It is concluded that the resonance splitting of the dispersion branch of SP may serve as an effective method for detecting weak oscillations and for measuring their parameters.

Defect Detection in ISC Cylinder Using Spoof Plasmon Polaritons

NASA is exploring the use of microwave spoof plasmon polaritons to detect defects in integrally stiffened cylinders. This work investigates the detection of simulated defects in the form of aluminum wires as small as 10 mm long and 3.1 mm diameter that are placed in between stiffeners of an ISC. The wires simulate manufacturing inclusions defects, and the sum of the delta impedance is shown to increase with increasing volume of added metal.
