Continuing Development of the Nuclear Data Processing Code AMPX [Poster]

The ENDF/B-VIII.1 evaluation library has seen a great growth in the thermal neutron scattering sub-library. The SCALE code system has traditionally approached CE transport by assuming that the CE library on disk represented the fully expanded cumulative probability distributions, conditional on exiting angle and marginal on exiting energy. While this is a complete description of the data, it comes at the potential cost of large amounts of on-disk storage. This approach was strained by several TSL files in ENDF/B-VIII.1, such as graphite, which contained data for a large number of Bragg edges. In the fully expanded probability distributions, this was found to be a disproportionately large fraction of the SCALE CE library.

Data Federation Challenges in Remote Near-Real-Time Fusion Experiment Data Processing

Fusion energy experiments and simulations provide critical information needed to plan future fusion reactors. As next-generation devices like ITER move toward long-pulse experiments, analyses, including AI and ML, should be performed in a wide range of time and computing constraints, from near-real-time constraints, between-shot analysis, and to campaign-wide long-term analysis. However, the data volume, velocity, and variety make it extremely challenging for analyses using only local computational resources. Researchers need the ability to compose and execute workflows spanning edge resources to large-scale high-performance computing facilities. We present Delta, a system to address data analysis challenges, including AI/ML, in fusion science, by leveraging the ADIOS I/O library and middleware, to support executing science workflows over the wide area network for near-real-time streaming. We discuss the data federation challenges in performing remote workflows, focusing on on-going research work in (1) managing, reducing, and streaming data to minimize I/O and data movement overheads, (2) decompressing and reorganizing data for analysis, and (3) executing workflows for automated data analysis. We introduce examples for deep-learning based data analysis for the fusion domain and demonstrate how we use Delta to construct end-to-end workflows for a fusion device in Korea, connecting a remote DOE facility in the USA. The capability demonstrated by this project is the basis for improving the state of the art for near-real-time data federation amongst remote facilities.

The real-time data processing and acquisition system for Project 8 Phase II

In Phase II of the Project 8 neutrino mass experiment, electrons from the decays of tritium or 83 m Kr are detected via their ≈ 26GHz cyclotron radiation while contained within a circular waveguide. The signal from a given electron is characterized as a brief chirp, lasting ≲ 10ms and changing in frequency by ≲ 1MHz/ms. To detect these signals, the Project 8 collaboration developed a Data Acquisition (DAQ) system tailored to the signal properties. The DAQ is responsible for simultaneously selecting up to three 100MHz-wide frequency windows to study, detect, and trigger on likely signals from different electron kinetic energies, and for writing the relevant data to disk. We describe the Phase II DAQ system in detail and address how the system was used for data-taking operations.

A Data Processing Pipeline To Extract A Knowledge Graph From Sec Documents For Socio-technical Analysis Of Critical Infrastructure Influence

The code is written in Python and consists of the following pipeline that is implemented in Apache Airflow. This pipeline intends to understand the companies that are directly or indirectly involved with a type of critical infrastructure system at some point in that system's lifecycle. The pipeline takes a configuration file that specifies a list of initial companies to consider, a geographic region of interest (disk) expressed as a latitude/longitude point and distance, and a set of SEC form types from which to extract entities and relations. There are three main components to this pipeline as currently implemented: Social Network Extraction, Critical Infrastructure Network Extraction, and Inference and Fusion. First, Social Network Extraction, implemented as the `organizations_sec` component of the workflow graph queries the SEC EDGAR webservice using the list of initial companies from the configuration file. Given this, it extracts metadata that documents the number of each type of form for the given set of companies and their location. This forms metadata represents a catalog of data sources for the extracted social network knowledge graph. The pipeline then downloads these forms from the website and saves them in a build directory for further processing. These documents are then parsed for entities and relations. Second, the Critical Network Extraction component extracts entities and relations for a critical infrastructure sector. Currently, we focus on Electric Vehicle charging stations and this information is available via the Department of Energy (DOE) database on fueling stations maintained by NREL. Third, the Inference and Fusion component relates the social network graph to the critical infrastructure graph in order to understand the impact of a company within a geographic region. Relations include ownership of the EV Charging Station asset as well as maintenance/ownership of the EV payment networks. The fused network can be represented in many ways and currently we emit a knowledge graph.

X-Ray Scattering Data Processing and Analysis

Semicrystalline polymers have a degree of crystallinity that depends on chain structure and crystallization conditions. Thermomechanical properties are influenced by the degree of crystallinity and crystalline morphology. A common method used to understand crystalline content, crystal and amorphous layer thickness, and layer thickness distributions, is X-ray scattering (XS). This report uses XS to first investigate crystalline orientation in high density polyethylene (HDPE) samples. Then, a single orientation is analyzed via XS in a temperature study to investigate crystalline behavior under changing temperatures. Lastly, block copolymer filaments extruded at varying speeds are analyzed. The X-ray data are used to gain a baseline understanding of crystalline behavior in these unique filaments.

WFIP3 High Frequency Radar / Processed Data

These data were collected by Kirincich as part of the DOE Wind Forecast Improvement Project, based on support from NOAA-IOOS, WHOI, and DOE. The data consist of estimates of the near-surface horizontal (East and North) ocean currents made via High Frequency (HF) radar-based remote sensing of the Ocean backscatter spectrum. The effective measurement depth of the WHOI HF radars is 0.5 m below the ocean surface. The WHOI HF radar system, as operated during the experiment, consisted of 4 land-based sites spaced at 30-40km intervals along the area spanning from Nantucket,MA to Narragansett,RI that operate at 16 MHz and 25 MHz systems (see Kirincich et al, 2019 and Kirincich et al 2022 for details). Received doppler spectra from each were processed using the advanced methods of Kirincich et al. 2012, and Kirincich et al 2019, and unpublished work Kirincich, 2024) into radial or elliptical velocity estimates every 30 min based on a 30 min averaging window.

Re-Release of the ENDF/B VIII.0 S(α,β) Data Processed by NJOY2016

“ENDF/B-VIII.0 provides a major update to the ENDF thermal scattering library. Indeed, it is nearly a completely new sub-library. Only the legacy evaluations for Al, Fe, liquid and solid methane, ortho- and para- hydrogen and deuterium and benzene and the ENDF/B-VII.1 evaluations for SiO2 are unchanged.” Thirty-four (34) materials are provided in ENDF/B-VIII.0 with a total of two hundred and fifty-three (253) evaluations. LEAPR input files are also included for each of the materials as well as “readme” files for most of the materials. All of these 34 thermal scattering files have been re-processed with NJOY2016 (version 53) to produce 253 ACE files suitable for use in MCNP or other similar codes. Table 1 lists the 34 materials which are included in the ENDF/B-VIII.0 thermal scattering library and also notes where major changes have occurred in the re-release.
