On-Orbit Calibration and Performance Assessments of Terra and Aqua Modis Thermal Emissive Bands

Terra and Aqua MODIS have successfully operated for more than 20 and 18 years, respectively, and far exceeded their designed lifetimes of 6 years. MODIS has 36 spectral bands, among which 16 are the thermal emissive bands (TEB) covering a wavelength range from 3.75 to 14.24 μm. Observations from the MODIS TEB have been used to generate a number of data products, such as surface/cloud/atmospheric temperatures, cloud top altitude, and water vapor properties. To a large extent, the quality of the MODIS L1B radiance product has been maintained through the entirety of each mission via extensive on-orbit calibration and validation efforts. MODIS TEB calibration uses a quadratic algorithm and is referenced to an on-board blackbody with its temperature measurements traceable to the NIST standard. We provide an overview of the MODIS instrument operations, key TEB calibration activities, and algorithms used in the latest L1B data Collection 6.1 (C6.1) and describe the TEB on-orbit performance for both Terra and Aqua MODIS. The TEB gain trends have been stable to within 5% over the Terra mission after 2003 under the same electronic configuration, except for bands 27 to 30, and within 3% over the Aqua mission. The Terra MODIS optical crosstalk correction implemented right after launch has been very effective in removing the ghost images in its photoconductive detector bands 32 to 36. Starting from C6.1, an electronic crosstalk correction algorithm has also been applied to the Terra MODIS photovoltaic detector long-wave infrared bands 27 to 30. The noise characterization performance remains stable with most TEB detectors continuously meeting their design requirements. A gradual loss of the Aqua MODIS radiative cooler margin reached its maximum in 2013 and has been slowly recovering since then. On-orbit changes in TEB response versus scan angle are extremely small based on pitch maneuver observations and assessments using vicarious approaches. The remaining challenges in TEB calibration and proposed improvements for the upcoming data collection with L1B data production and reprocessing are discussed.

Study of time-lapse processing for dynamic hydrologic conditions

The usefulness of dynamic display techniques in exploiting the repetitive nature of ERTS imagery was investigated. A specially designed Electronic Satellite Image Analysis Console (ESIAC) was developed and employed to process data for seven ERTS principal investigators studying dynamic hydrological conditions for diverse applications. These applications include measurement of snowfield extent and sediment plumes from estuary discharge, Playa Lake inventory, and monitoring of phreatophyte and other vegetation changes. The ESIAC provides facilities for storing registered image sequences in a magnetic video disc memory for subsequent recall, enhancement, and animated display in monochrome or color. The most unique feature of the system is the capability to time lapse the imagery and analytic displays of the imagery. Data products included quantitative measurements of distances and areas, binary thematic maps based on monospectral or multispectral decisions, radiance profiles, and movie loops. Applications of animation for uses other than creating time-lapse sequences are identified. Input to the ESIAC can be either digital or via photographic transparencies.

Implementation of a Very Large Atmospheric Correction Lookup Table for ASTER Using a Relational Database Management System

The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER)is designed to provide a high resolution map of the Earth in both visible, near-infrared, and thermal spectral regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The ASTER Science Team has developed several standard data product algorithms, but the most complex aod computing-intensive of these is the estimation of surface radiance and reflectance values, which is done by modeling and correcting for the effects of the atmosphere. The algorithm for atmospheric correction in the visible bands sensed by ASTER calls for use of a very large Atmospheric Correction Look Up Table (ACLUT).

Jpss-4 VIIRS Polarization Sensitivity Performance Comparison With Heritage VIIRS Sensors

The Joint Polar Satellite System 4 (JPSS-4) is the follow-on for the Suomi-National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) and Joint Polar Satellite Systems 1-3 (JPSS-1, -2 and -3) missions. A primary sensor on both JPSS and S-NPP spacecrafts is the Visible-Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) that provides valuable weather and climate products to the user community. VIIRS covers the Reflective Solar Band (RSB) and Thermal Emissive Band (TEB) spectral regions and contains a Day Night Band (DNB) that uses Lunar illumination at night. VIIRS provides top-of-atmosphere radiance, reflectance, and brightness temperature within the Sensor Data Records (SDRs) that are used in sea surface temperature, cloud characterization, land surface properties and ocean color/chlorophyll Environmental Data Record (EDR) products. The SDR calibration is performed using unpolarized sources such as a Solar Diffuser (SD) for the RSBs or an On-Board Calibrator BlackBody (OBCBB) for the TEBs. Earth scenes with polarizing properties will create radiometric bias errors within the SDRs based on how sensitive VIIRS is to polarized illumination and must be corrected in some EDR algorithms. This paper will discuss the JPSS-4 VIIRS polarization characterization methodology, polarization sensitivity results and compare its performance to its predecessors S-NPP and JPSS-1 through -3 VIIRS.

Product of the SNPP VIIRS SD Screen Transmittance and the SD BRDF (RSB) From Both Yaw Maneuver and Regular On-Orbit Data

To assure data quality, the Earth-observing Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) regularly performs on-orbit radiometric calibrations of its 22 spectral bands. The primary calibration radiance source for the reflective solar bands (RSBs) is a sunlit solar diffuser (SD). During the calibration process, sunlight goes through a perforated plate (the SD screen) and then strikes the SD. The SD scattered sunlight is used for the calibration, with the spectral radiance proportional to the product of the SD screen transmittance and the SD bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). The BRDF is decomposed to the product of its value at launch and a numerical factor quantifying its change since launch. Therefore, the RSB calibration requires accurate knowledge of the product of the SD screen transmittance and the BRDF (RSB; launch time). Previously, we calculated the product with yaw maneuver data and found that the product had improved accuracy over the prelaunch one. With both yaw maneuver and regular on orbit data, we were able to improve the accuracy of the SDSM screen transmittance and the product for the solar diffuser stability monitor SD view. In this study, we use both yaw maneuver and a small portion of regular on-orbit data to determine the product for the RSB SD view.

Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) Data Products for Climate Research

NASA's Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) project integrates CERES, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and geostationary satellite observations to provide top-of-atmosphere (TOA) irradiances derived from broadband radiance observations by CERES instruments. It also uses snow cover and sea ice extent retrieved from microwave instruments as well as thermodynamic variables from reanalysis. In addition, these variables are used for surface and atmospheric irradiance computations. The CERES project provides TOA, surface, and atmospheric irradiances in various spatial and temporal resolutions. These data sets are for climate research and evaluation of climate models. Long-term observations are required to understand how the Earth system responds to radiative forcing. A simple model is used to estimate the time to detect trends in TOA reflected shortwave and emitted longwave irradiances.
