Portable low-frequency vibration measuring and recording system

Information gathering system measures and records vibrations which affect personnel comfort in space, air, and surface vehicles. Three vibration transducers with mutually perpendicular axes control the frequency output of voltage controlled oscillators /VCO/. Outputs of VCO'S are multiplexed and then recorded on one track of stereo tape recorder.

Plant tissue and the color infrared record

Green plant tissue should not be considered as having a uniguely high near-infrared reflectance but rather a low visual reflectance. Leaf tissue without chloroplasts appears to reflect well both visual and near infrared wavelengths. The sensitometry of color infrared film is such that a spectral imbalance strongly favoring infrared reflection is necessary to yield a red record. It is the absorption of visual light by chlorophyll that creates the imbalance that makes the typical red record for plants possible. Reflectance measurements of leaves that have been chemically blanched or which have gone into natural chloride decline strongly suggests that it is the rise in the visual reflectance that is most important in removing the imbalance and degrading the red CIR record. The role of water in leaves appears to be that of rendering epidermal membranes translucent so that the underlying chlorophyll controls the reflection rather than the leaf surface.

Processor for high-density digital tape-recorded signals

Linear filter and detection theory can bear on problem of reconstructing recorded bit stream. Problem can be taken from realm of nonlinear problems even though basic record process is still recognized as highly nonlinear. Digital tape recorder can be modeled as particular type of linear communication channel with intersymbol interference.

Self-recording portable soil penetrometer

A lightweight portable penetrometer for testing soil characteristics is described. The penetrometer is composed of a handle, data recording, and probe components detachably joined together. The data recording component has an easily removed recording drum which rotates according to the downward force applied on the handle, and a stylus means for marking the drum along its height according to the penetration depth of probe into the soil.

Thermomagnetic recording and magneto-optic playback system having constant intensity laser beam control

A system is developed for maintaining the intensity of a laser beam at a constant level in a thermomagnetic recording and magneto-optic playback system in which an isotropic film is heated along a continuous path by the laser beam for recording. As each successive area of the path is heated locally to the vicinity of its Curie point in the presence of a controlled magnetic field, a magneto-optic density is produced proportional to the amplitude of the controlled magnetic field. To play back the recorded signal, the intensity of the laser beam is reduced and a Faraday or Kerr effect analyzer is used, with a photodetector, as a transducer for producing an output signal.

Holographic recording materials development

Developments in the area of organic cis-trans isomerization systems for holographic memory applications are reported. The chemical research effort consisted of photochemical studies leading to the selection of a stilbene derivative and a polymer matrix system which have greatly improved refractive index differences between the cis and trans isomers as well as demonstrated efficiency of the photoisomerization process. In work on lithium niobate effects of sample stoichiometry and of read and write beam polarizations on recording efficiency were investigated. LiNbO3 was used for a study of angular sensitivity and of capability for simultaneous recording of extended objects without interference. The current status of LiNbO3 as a holographic recording material is summarized.

Small-aircraft flight evaluation of Rustrak chart recorder

It was found that the RUSTRAK recorder was only slightly hampered by aircraft vibration while in level cruising flight or while taxiing, regardless of light turbulence or particular mounting configuration. No one mounting configuration was better than the other. There is some (approximately 1/4 inch) vibration error during climbs, descents, and touchdowns in choppy weather. However, it was found that improved performance resulted from setting the recorder on carpet rather than the metal floor plate. This suggests that padding the recorder with some cushioning, shock-damping material might reduce the engine vibration and wind chop effects.

DSN telemetry system data records

The DSN telemetry system now includes the capability to provide a complete magnetic tape record, within 24 hours of reception, of all telemetry data received from a spacecraft. This record, the intermediate data record, is processed and generated almost entirely automatically, and provides a detailed accounting of any missing data.

Baseband recording and playback

Analog recordings of spacecraft telemetry signals are made by Deep Space Network Deep Space Stations to provide backup for both spacecraft and ground station anomalies. The requirements that must be met to insure successful baseband recording and playback are given. Recording and playback procedures are developed to insure that these requirements are met and performance results from tests conducted at the Compatibility Test Area (JPL) are tabulated.

Predetection telemetry analog recording and playback for Pioneer Venus 1978

Prediction telemetry recording and playback capability was implemented in the DSN to meet PV-78 mission requirements. Test data, along with theoretical considerations, gives assurance that the data degradation commitment of 1.5 db will be met, and it is anticipated that in actual performance the design goal of 1.0 db will be met. The major technical problems requiring solution were elimination of image in the OLR and the reduction of analog recorder instabilities. These were solved through the use of single-sideband mixing techniques and the use of newer generation analog recorders.

An analysis of maximum horizontal wind speeds recorded since 1961 at Kennedy Space Center, Florida

Tabulations of maximum horizontal wind speed values are reported that were recorded at the Kennedy Space Center. Maximum wind speeds were recorded during the eight hurricanes which have affected the area--Cleo in August 1964 through Agnes in June 1972. Detailed tabulations and frequency distributions of daily maximum horizontal wind speeds recorded at NASA's 150 m ground tower facility at nine levels from December 1965 through March 1970 are also included.

Electronic heterodyne recording and processing of optical holograms using phase modulated reference waves

The use of a phase-modulated reference wave for the electronic heterodyne recording and processing of a hologram is described. Heterodyne recording is used to eliminate the self-interference terms of a hologram and to create a Leith-Upatnieks hologram with coaxial object and reference waves. Phase modulation is also shown to be the foundation of a multiple-view hologram system. When combined with hologram scale transformations, heterodyne recording is the key to general optical processing. Spatial filtering is treated as an example.

Effect of sampling rate and record length on the determination of stability and control derivatives

Flight data from five aircraft were used to assess the effects of sampling rate and record length reductions on estimates of stability and control derivatives produced by a maximum likelihood estimation method. Derivatives could be extracted from flight data with the maximum likelihood estimation method even if there were considerable reductions in sampling rate and/or record length. Small amplitude pulse maneuvers showed greater degradation of the derivative maneuvers than large amplitude pulse maneuvers when these reductions were made. Reducing the sampling rate was found to be more desirable than reducing the record length as a method of lessening the total computation time required without greatly degrading the quantity of the estimates.

Simulated electronic heterodyne recording and processing of pulsed-laser holograms

The electronic recording of pulsed-laser holograms is proposed. The polarization sensitivity of each resolution element of the detector is controlled independently to add an arbitrary phase to the image waves. This method which can be used to simulate heterodyne recording and to process three-dimensional optical images, is based on a similar method for heterodyne recording and processing of continuous-wave holograms.
