Composite seals for liquid hydrogen and nuclear radiation environments.

Description of plastic composite seals for service in a liquid-hydrogen and nuclear-radiation environment. The radiation-resistant aromatic heterocyclic class of polymers, including polyimide, polybenzimidazole, and polyquinoxaline, were evaluated for this application. The seal developed is based on a design involving a resin-starved laminate consisting of alternating layers of woven glass fabric and polymer film. This design imparts a mechanical spring characteristic to the seal, resulting in essentially complete elastic recovery when unloaded, and eliminates cold flow. Encapsulating techniques employing the polyquinoxaline polymer were developed which rendered the seal impervious to liquid hydrogen. The seals were tested before and after gamma irradiation up to 10 to the 10th ergs/g. Load/deflection and leakage tests were performed over a temperature range from -423 through +500 F.

Fluorescence activated cell sorting.

An instrument has been developed for sorting biological cells. The cells are rendered differentially fluorescent and incorporated into a small liquid stream illuminated by a laser beam. The cells pass sequentially through the beam, and fluorescent light from the cells gives rise to electrical signals. The stream is broken into a series of uniform size drops downstream of the laser. The cell signals are used to give appropriate electrostatic charges to drops containing the cells. The drops then pass between two charged plates and are deflected to appropriate containers. The system has proved capable of providing fractions containing large numbers of viable cells highly enriched in a particular functional type.

Investigation of an electronic image enhancer for radiographs.

Radiographs of nuclear and aerospace components were studied with a closed-circuit television system to determine the advantages of electronic enhancement in radiographic nondestructive evaluation. The radiographic images were examined on a television monitor under various degrees of magnification and enhancement. The enhancement was accomplished by generating a video signal whose amplitude is proportional to the rate of change of density. Points, lines, edges, and other density variations that are faintly registered in the original image are rendered in sharp relief. Examples of the applications of this mode of enhancement are discussed together with the system's dynamic response and resolution.

Holographic nondestructive testing with impact excitation.

Review of some experimental results of bond flaw detection in composite materials by holographic recording of the surface of samples subjected to mechanical impact. The resulting deformation of the samples recorded in a sequence of double exposure holograms at increasingly longer time intervals after impact renders the presence of flaws observable. A proposed deformation enhancement technique increases detection sensitivity and is helpful in visualizing smaller flaws.

Application of remote sensing in the study of vegetation and soils in Idaho

The author has identified the following significant results. Comparison of ERTS-1 imagery and USGS 1:250,000 scale maps of study areas with known ground points revealed significant map errors. These errors were sufficient to render impractical the projection of ERTS-1 imagery directly onto maps of the area. Marked differences were found in the delineation of ground features by different MSS bands. Generally, Band 4 was least useful, while Band 5 proved valuable for indicating patterns of native vegetation, cultivated areas - both dry and irrigated, lava fields, drainage basins, and deep bodies of water. Band 6 was better for landforms and drainages and for shallow bodies of water than Band 5 but inferior for indicating patterns in native vegetation and most types of cultivated land. Band 7 was best of all for indicating lava flows, water bodies, and landform features. Use of a additive color viewer-projector aided greatly in separation of images. A combination of Bands 5 and 7 with appropriate color filters proved best for separating most types of native vegetation and cultivated crops. Landform features and water bodies also showed well with this combination. The addition of Band 4 imagery to these further enhanced the identification of semi-dormant vegetation.

Evaluation of the potentials of the ERTS techniques for geological mapping purposes

The author has identified the following significant results. Preliminary analysis of the full frame images shows the following: (1) The techniques employed were found suitable for study purposes. (2) The positional accuracy of the system corrected bulk processed MSS images is about 100-400 m. (3) Drainage is well depicted and morphotectonic features could be recognized. (4) Water bodies are clearly shown in MSS band 7. (5) Major roads, railway lines, and large towns are more or less detectable on bands 6 and 7. (6) Vegetation and agricultural areas are recognizable at many places. (7) Major rock formation boundaries, in general, are more or less clear. (8) Some of the structural trends including folded and linear structural elements are clear. (9) MSS bands 5 and 7 appear to be most useful for visual analysis. (10) Quick look analysis suggests that regional geological mapping on ERTS-1 imagery of the study area will be probably quite feasible. However, detailed analysis, visual and quantitative, on subframes, which is under progress may render more significant results.

Infectivity and egg production of Nematospiroides dubius as affected by space flight and ultraviolet irradiation

Nematospiroides dubius was tested to determine the infective potential of the third stage larvae and the egg-production and egg-viability rates of the resulting adults after they are exposed to space flight and solar ultraviolet irradiation. The results are indicative that space-flown larvae exposed to solar ultraviolet irradiation were rendered noninfective in C57 mice, whereas flight control larvae that received no solar ultraviolet irradiation matured at the same rate as the ground control larvae. However, depressed egg viability was evident in the flight control larvae.

Parasitic suppressing circuit

A circuit for suppressing parasitic oscillations across an inductor operating in a resonant mode is described. The circuit includes a switch means and resistive means connected serially across the inductor. A unidirectional resistive-capacitive network is also connected across the inductor and to the switch means to automatically render the switch means conducting when inductive current through the inductor ceases to flow.

Misalignment estimation software system

A system of computer software, spacecraft, and ground system activity is described that enables spacecraft startrackers and inertial assemblies to be aligned and calibrated from the ground after the spacecraft has achieved orbit. The system generates in the uplink flow an exercise designed to render misalignments visible, and sends the exercise to the spacecraft where the spacecraft inserts the misalignment into the information in the form of attitude sensor error. The information is downlinked for processing into misalignment estimates to be used for correcting spacecraft model at data base.

Mechanics of wheel-soil interaction

An approximate theory for wheel-soil interaction is presented which forms the basis for a practical solution to the problem. It is shown that two fundamental observations render the problem determinate: (1) The line of action of the resultant of radial stresses acting at the wheel soil interface approximately bisects the wheel-soil contact angle for all values of slip. (2) A shear stress surface can be hypothesized. The influence of soil inertia forces is also evaluated. A concept of equivalent cohesion is introduced which allows a convenient experimental comparison for both cohesive and frictional soils. This theory compares favorably with previous analyses and experimental data, and shows that soil inertia forces influencing the motion of a rolling wheel can be significant.

Acquisition and analysis of coastal ground-truth data for correlation with ERTS-1 imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. Radiance profiles drawn along cruise tracks have been examined for use in correlating digital radiance levels with ground truth data. Preliminary examination results are encouraging. Adding weighted levels from the 4 MSS bands appears to enhance specular surface reflections while rendering sensor noise white. Comparing each band signature to the added specular signature ought to enhance non-specular effects caused by ocean turbidity. Preliminary examination of radiance profiles and ground truth turbidity measurements revealed substantial correlation.

Feasibility model of a high reliability five-year tape transport, volume 2

Analysis of the design features of the modularized tape transport renders a life expectancy in excess of five years. Tests performed on the tape transport were directed toward determining its performance capability. These tests revealed that the tape jitter and skew are in the range achieved by high quality digital tape transports. Guidance of the tape in the lateral sense by the use of the two hybrid crowned rollers proved to be excellent. Tracking was maintained within less than one thousandth inch (approximately 2 micrometers). The guidance capability demonstrated makes possible the achievement of the performance objective of 7.2 x 10 to the 9th power storage capability employing 1500 ft. of one inch wide tape with a packing density of 5,000 bits per inch per track on 80 tracks. Also, the machine showed excellent characteristics operating over a wide range of tape speeds. The basic design concept lends itself to growth and adaptation to a wide range of recorder requirements.

Rotationsal and vibrational spectra of molecular ions: Feasibility of laboratory and astrophysical observation

The rotational spectra of a number of small molecular ions should be detectable in the microwave or millimeter wave regions in laboratory experiments using currently available techniques. The dipole moments and absorption coefficients of polar diatomics CO(+) and NO(+) as well as asymmetric isotopically enriched species, like O-18O-16(+), NE-20NE-22(+), and OC-18 O-16(+) are calculated to be sufficiently large to allow observation of their spectra. In addition to the detailed molecular structure information which such spectral data would provide, precise knowledge of the transition frequencies would render likely the detection of certain of these ions in the interstellar sources or in planetary atmospheres. All of these ions also possess vibrational spectra which should be detectable in the infrared region in laboratory or astrophysical sources.

Electron collection theory for a D-region subsonic blunt electrostatic probe

Blunt probe theory for subsonic flow in a weakly ionized and collisional gas is reviewed, and an electron collection theory for the relatively unexplored case, Deybye length approximately 1, which occurs in the lower ionosphere (D-region), is developed. It is found that the dimensionless Debye length is no longer an electric field screening parameter, and the space charge field effect can be negelected. For ion collection, Hoult-Sonin theory is recognized as a correct description of the thin, ion density-perturbed layer adjacent the blunt probe surface. The large volume with electron density perturbed by a positively biased probe renders the usual thin boundary layer analysis inapplicable. Theories relating free stream conditions to the electron collection rate for both stationary and moving blunt probes are obtained. A model based on experimental nonlinear electron drift velocity data is proposed. For a subsonically moving probe, it is found that the perturbed region can be divided into four regions with distinct collection mechanisms.

Space processing applications payload equipment study. Volume 3: Programmatics

The programmatic aspects of the space processing applications program and the methods of accommodating SPA payloads aboard the Shuttle/Spacelab host vehicle are discussed. An examination of the NASA traffic model shows that there exists a potential for 178 SPA payloads from the overall total of 727 flights specified. This could represent up to one quarter of the total shuttle flights during the 12-year-long period covered by the traffic model. The SPA payload will range from austere for shared flight opportunities to dedicated where space processing will encompass the total flight payload allocations. The major modes of use to SPA will include dedicated Spacelab missions, shared Spacelab missions and shared automated payloads attached to the pallet with the necessary control and display equipment in the host vehicle. Several layout drawings and artist's renderings have been completed to illustrate the various potential configurations available to accommodate the SPA payload equipment.
