A 2x2 W-Band Reference Time-Shifted Phase-Locked Transmitter Array in 65nm CMOS Technology

This paper presents a complete 2x2 phased array transmitter system operating at W-band (90-95 GHz) which employs a PLL reference time-shifting approach instead of using traditional mm-wave phase shifters. PLL reference shifting enables a phased array to be distributed over multiple chips without the need for coherent mm-wave signal distribution between chips. The proposed phased array transmitter system consumes 248 mW per array element when implemented in a 65 nm CMOS technology.

NASA Ames Research Center Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel Fall 2018 Outage - Motor 1 Activity: Stator Shift

The Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel consists of the 11 x 11- Foot Transonic Wind Tunnel and the 9 x 7 foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel. The four 65,000hp electric motors that drive the wind tunnel compressors require periodic maintenance. In order to inspect the motors without the removal of drive shaft components, the stator must be shifted away from the motor. This process is referred to as "Stator Shift". Video is mp4 formatted with runtime of 2 mins 54 secs.

A simplified, compact static shift register

Shift register was developed which uses only one D type flip-flop and improves packaging density by approximately 25% over the usual arrangement. Circuit is compromise between full master-slave arrangement and dynamic shift register, with limitation only of length of time that clock can be held high during new data entry.

A method of eliminating hydrogen maser wall shift

Maser output frequency shift was prevented by storage bulb kept at temperature at which wall shift is zero and effects of bulb size, shape, and surface texture are eliminated. Servo system is shown, along with bidirectional counter.

Differential phase shift of partially reflected radio waves.

The addition of phase difference measurements to differential absorption experiments is shown to be both feasible and desirable. The phase information can provide a more sensitive measurement of electron density above about 75 km. The differential phase shift is only weakly dependent on collision frequency in this range, and so an accurate collision frequency profile is not a prerequisite. The differential phase shift and differential absorption measurements taken together can provide both electron density and collision frequency data from about 70 to 90 km.

Shift and broadening of resonance in turbulent plasmas.

The resonant wave-particle interaction is described, taking into account the effect of the turbulent field on the particle motion in lowest order. It is shown that an electrostatic turbulence produces a shift and a broadening of the Landau resonance. It is found that the resonance shift depends on the mean square spread in wave numbers of the turbulent spectrum, while the resonance width is proportional to the root square of the wave amplitude.

Light and buffer-gas frequency shifts in the Rb-85 maser frequency standard.

The effect of buffer gas and pumping light on the output frequency of the Rb-85 maser is discussed. In contrast to a primary standard, these frequency shifts can be used to advantage when it is necessary to operate the maser at a frequency which differs from the ground-state hyperfine frequency by a few kilohertz. Using appropriate mixtures of buffer gas and carefully shaped lamp spectral profiles, it is also possible to operate the maser exactly at the ground-state hyperfine frequency. It is pointed out that the short-term phase stability of the maser is not impaired by these shifts.

Frequency shifts of ionospheric nfH resonances.

New observational data are analyzed to interpret mechanisms responsible for large positive frequency shifts of Alouette II plasma resonances (corresponding to the first and second electron cyclotron harmonics) relative to frequency values expected from model magnetic field calculations. It is shown that the frequency shifts can be consistently explained by plasma wave dispersion effects combined with sounder transmitter frequency deviation (positive offset of several kilohertz) and a negative offset (several tens of gammas) in the geomagnetic field relative to the model field. Plasma wave dispersion effects are observed on the electron cyclotron second harmonic resonance when it is in the vicinity of the resonance observed near the upper hybrid frequency. The observations suggest that an oblique echo model may be required for interpretation of the electron cyclotron second harmonic resonance.

Speed-dependent collisional width and shift parameters in spectral profiles.

Derivation of an expression for the spectral profile, termed a speed-dependent Voigt profile (SDVP), taking into account speed-dependent shift and width parameters which are calculated on the basis of an active atom-perturber interaction. It is shown that an analysis of line shapes in terms of simple Voigt profiles (rather than the SDVP) may lead to considerable errors in the determination of characteristic atomic parameters, especially in systems where the perturber to active atom mass ratio is large. It is also noted that the speed-dependent shift leads to an asymmetrical profile, and such a profile is displayed.

Four-phase differential phase shift resolver

Two systems have been developed to resolve phase uncertainty without transmitting reference signals. In both methods signal is impressed on carrier as differential, rather than absolute, phase shift. At the receiver four-phase demodulation and logic process unambiguously resolves differential phase shift of input carrier.

Doppler shift system

A system is described for measuring velocities of radiating particles based on Doppler shift. Light from the particles is directed through a narrow band optical filter to a Fabry-Perot interferometer initially tuned to a selected center line corresponding to zero particle Doppler shift. The movable mirror of the interferometer is made to sweep about the center line by the output of a modulation oscillator. The fringe pattern output is imaged onto a pin hole through which light is directed to a photomultiplier. The output of the photomultiplier is supplied to a phase sensitive detector with the oscillator output as a reference signal and which operates in the quadrature mode. The detector's output is gain controlled and is combined with the oscillator's output to adjust the interferometer's movable mirror to acquire the line center.

Possible isotopic shifts with changes in the geomagnetic field

The geomagnetic fields of the past geological epochs are studied on the basis of observations on the rock residual magnetization. This paper evaluates the shifts in the isotopic composition of the same elements in the rocks affected by cosmic rays. The possibility of using the shifts in the isotopic composition for revealing geomagnetic field inversions is discussed. Geomagnetic field inversion periods traced by the rock residual magnetization are in good agreement with the periods of the greatest qualitative changes in the animal world throughout the last 500 million years.

Harmonic generation at high field strengths - Frequency shifts and saturation phenomena

Optical harmonic generation and mixing in the gas phase has been proposed as a technique for the generation of coherent radiation in the vacuum ultraviolet and soft X-ray spectral region. At the high field strengths required by these processes the interaction between atoms and the electromagnetic field shows intensity-dependent resonances. In this paper we modify harmonic generation theory to include the effect of these frequency shifts. Closed-form expressions for generated dipole moment, absorption probability, and coherence length are presented. The most important consequences of frequency shifts on resonantly enhanced processes are that the pump laser must be tuned away from the small-field resonance frequency, that the conversion efficiency may saturate, and that the dispersion of the medium may change sign. As an example, the generation of 198-A radiation by a five-photon mixing process in Li(+) is considered.
