Future of Energy Efficiency in Buildings: Drivers and Market Expectations [Slides]

This slide-deck report identifies drivers of energy efficiency in buildings over the next 10 years, for all fuels. The report also provides insights on what the future of efficiency may look like in that time period and considers other distributed energy resources, as well as decarbonization and demand flexibility, to the extent they are intertwined with efficiency activities. Understanding market drivers and possible future market attributes for energy efficiency can help policy makers, regulators and industry make informed decisions—for example, how best to design policies and investments to support desired outcomes.

Using the Criticality Accident Alarm System modeling capabilities in SCALE [Slides]

The following is a summary of advice for CAAS modeling in SCALE. Refer to the SCALE Criticality Safety and Radiation Shielding training slides or to the SCALE manual for exact syntax. Use a mesh for the fission source that is the most adequate for the problem to solve (coarse/fine). Don’t spend unnecessary resources; simplify the model if it does not impact the final results of interest. Be careful to deactivate secondary fissions in MAVRIC or the calculation may never end. Check that k eff and $\overline{\upsilon}$ calculated results are logical. Between KENO and MAVRIC, cross section libraries, materials, geometry, and mesh grid can be the same or different. Iterative calculations are usually complex problems that need variance reduction. It will be hard to find the best solving parameters in the first attempt; expert judgement is needed. Check each step separately. Use Fulcrum to visualize fission source, mesh source, and spatial/energy distributions to find potential errors or impactful imprecisions.

MFVI Energy Efficiency Audit Training Module 3.1: Cooling Systems [Slides]

This slide deck is designed to help trained energy efficiency professionals conduct an energy efficiency audit for commercial and industrial buildings, particularly for micro-, small-, and medium-sized businesses in Mexico. This training module is focused on cooling systems. As such, it will assist its user in determining the optimal cooling system for a given space and then identifying the most efficient means of delivering that system.

MCATK: Mesh and Material Indexing with Domain Decomposition [Slides]

Slides documenting some of the basics in how MCATK handles the mesh, mesh indexing, materials (IDs and Densities), material indexing, and domain decomposition indexing. These basics hold when using the hybrid parallelism; a full domain decomposition is one replica; a full domain replicated is when number of replicas equals the number of ranks; for the other cases of replicas then the decomposition is what is described here within each replica.

Scenario Exploration and Timeline Analysis for Advanced Reactors [Slides]

Slides created to discuss the report "Approach and Model Used to Represent a Timeline Analysis for Security Design Enhancements" (August 2022 INL/ RPT-22-68664) for an upcoming DOE security workshop. Advanced reactors will be able to use risk insights for many design aspects. We need realistic scenarios for input into the licensing basis safety-case. These scenarios must include timing and physics. We need to automate the safety-case creation as much as possible.

IER 296 Experiment- Thermal Feasibility Analysis [Slides]

This set of slides summarizes progress, highlights, and issues related to the LANL design engineering effort for the IER 296 critical experiment. The experiment configuration described in Section 5.1.1 of CED-1 IRSN Preliminary Design for Thermal/Epithermal Experiments with MOX FUEL (TEX-MOX) is re-examined in a finite element analysis model using design geometry utilized in the Chlorine Worth Study (CWS) Experiments. Preliminary results and design considerations are presented. Additional analysis has been performed based on comments from the collaborative virtual meeting on 12JAN2023. Specifically, the fuel cladding and gas gap have been included in the thermal analysis.
