Second Cambridge Workshop on Cool Stars, Stellar Systems, and the Sun, volume 1

Solar and stellar atmospheric phenomena and their fundamental physical properties such as gravity, effective temperature and rotation rate, which provides the range in parameter space required to test various theoretical models were investigated. The similarity between solar activity and stellar activity is documented. Some of the topics discussed are: atmospheric structure, magnetic fields, solar and stellar activity, and evolution.

First observations of stellar coronal structure - The coronae of AR Lacertae

In connection with the present investigation, X-ray, radio, and ultraviolet observations of AR Lacertae over one orbital cycle have been obtained. The X-ray light curve shows a deep primary minimum and a broad, shallow secondary minimum. The quiescent corona of the G2 IV component is small and asymmetric. This corona extends some 0.02 stellar radii above the photosphere; the leading, spotted hemisphere is brighter in X-rays than the trailing hemisphere. The K0 IV component has two coronal components. The extended, presumably hotter component extends to one stellar radius above the photosphere and exhibits a brighter leading hemisphere. There is an inner coronal component which is small relative to the stellar radius, but the lack of coverage past mid-eclipse severely limits the possibility to deduce the nature of this component. The UV observations also imply a nonuniform surface distribution of plage regions.

Stellar evolution in N-body simulations of disk galaxies. I

The Kalnajs (1972, 1976) Omega models of global mass and velocity distributions are employed in the present two-dimensional N-body simulation, which allows for a spectrum of particle masses, stellar explosions, explosion remnant interactions with an interstellar medium, and the creation of new stars from the gas. Two sequences of runs using the Omega values of 0.8 and 0.9 examine the separate and combined effects of particle mass distribution, the gravitational influence of an interstellar gas distribution on the N-body particles, and stellar evolution, allowing for stellar explosions and star formation from the gas. It is found that both Omega values' nonequilibrium results dramatically change when evolution is allowed to occur. These results call for more realistic coupled N-body and evolution simulations in order to improve the understanding of disk galaxy evolution.

A new technique for calculations of binary stellar evolution, with application to magnetic braking

The development of appropriate computer programs has made it possible to conduct studies of stellar evolution which are more detailed and accurate than the investigations previously feasible. However, the use of such programs can also entail some serious drawbacks which are related to the time and expense required for the work. One approach for overcoming these drawbacks involves the employment of simplified stellar evolution codes which incorporate the essential physics of the problem of interest without attempting either great generality or maximal accuracy. Rappaport et al. (1982) have developed a simplified code to study the evolution of close binary stellar systems composed of a collapsed object and a low-mass secondary. The present investigation is concerned with a more general, but still simplified, technique for calculating the evolution of close binary systems with collapsed binaries and mass-losing secondaries.

Stellar populations in local group dwarf elliptical galaxies. II - NGC 205

NGC 205, a dwarf elliptical companion of M31, was studied using deep CCD photometry on the VRI system. Consideration is given to a comparison between the giant branch and the Galactic globular clusters, the degree of chemical enrichment in the outer parts of NGC 204, and the setting of constraints on the stellar population of NGC 205. Should the distance of the galaxy be that of M31, this field's stellar population is extremely old. If star formation in NGC 205 is a recurring phenomenon, it is confined to the interior of the galaxy. Should the stellar population of NGC 205 be as old as Galactic globular clusters, its distance modulus is 24.3 + or - 0.2. The giant branch location corresponds to a mean metallicity greater than or equal to -0.9 + or - 0.2, and a metallicity dispersion is determined to be sigma greater than or equal to 0.5 dex. Also noted is that the color distribution at a given luminosity appears to be positively skewed.

Ultraviolet Spectral Morphology of O-type Stellar Winds

The highly systematic behavior of the stellar wind features among the majority of O-type spectra, and their strong correlations with the well-calibrated optical spectral types, are consistent with those wind models which incorporate a structural dependence on the fundamental stellar parameters. On the contrary, wind models which postulate a predominance of random rotational or magnetic effects, unrelated to the fundamental stellar parameters, are not supported by the ultraviolet spectral morphology; rather, such effects may contribute to the observed properties of some of the exceptionally peculiar objects.

Stellar Winda: Observational Evidence for a Hot-cool Star Connection

Stellar wind data was collected for a total of 272 stars representing all spectral types including Wolf-Rayet stars. Two significant correlations are found relating the wind luminosity (L sub w = 1/2 MV sub infinity squared) to the bolometric luminosity and the terminal velocity of the stellar wind to the stellar effective temperature. Least-squared fits to the data suggest that the wind luminosity is approximately the bolometric luminosity squared and the terminal velocity is approximately the effective temperature to the 1.8 power. The surprising result is that all spectral types throughout the HR diagram are represented in these correlations.

Effect of Scattering on Instabilities in Line-driven Stellar Winds

Line driven O-B stellar winds are unstable to perturbations of short spatial wavelength and the growth rates for such instabilities are very rapid. The nature of the nonlinear development of this instability is unknown, but might possibly be one of blobs of gas driven through ambient gas or a quasiregular train of outward moving shocks. In either case the resulting dissipation of mechanical energy might explain the observed anomalous heating n O-B stars as evidenced by their X-ray emission and high ionization state. It also might explain the observed fine structure of the absorption lines and their time variability. The driving due to the absorption of the stellar continuum flux was considered and the effects of the diffuse, scattered radiation field were neglected. It was shown that under certain special conditions the effect of scattering could reduce the instability growth rate to zero. A stability analysis that includes scattering, but that uses the more physically realistic assumption of complete redistribution instead of coherent scattering, and that includes the effects of transverse velocity gradients, which become important as the flow moves away from the stellar surface is presented. It is found that the instability is eliminated right at the base of the wind, but that as the flow moves outward the instability rate rapidly becomes equal to a substantial fraction of the calculated value, the fraction asymptotically reaching 80% at large radii. Since this still implies many e folds in a characteristic outflow time, the primary conclusion that these winds are highly unstable is unchanged.

Exploring the Solar System with Stellar Occultations

By recording the light intensity as a function of time when a planet occults a relatively bright star, the thermal structure of the upper atmosphere of the planet can be probed. The main feature of stellar occultation observations is their high spatial resolution, typically several thousand times better than the resolution achievable with ground-based imaging. Five stellar occultations have been observed. The main results of these observations are summarized. Stellar occultations have been observed on Uranus, Mars, Pallas, Neptune and the Jovian Ring.

The HEAO-2 Guest Investigator Program: Non-linear growth of instabilities in line-driven stellar winds

The linear instability of line-driven stellar winds to take proper account of the dynamical effect of scattered radiation were analyzed. It is found that: (1) the drag effect of the mean scattered radiation does greatly reduce the contribution of scattering lines to the instability at the very base of the wind, but the instability growth rate associated with such lines rapidly increases as the flow moves outward from the base, reaching more than 50% of the growth rate for pure absorption lines within a stellar radius of the surface, and eventually reaching 80% of that rate at large radii; (2) perturbations in the scattered radiation field may be important for the propagation of wind disturbances, but they have little effect on the wind instability; and (3) the contribution of strongly shadowed lines to the wind instability is often reduced compared to that of unshadowed lines, but their overall effect is not one of damping in the outer parts of the wind. It is concluded that, even when all scattering effects are taken into account, the bulk of the flow in a line-driven stellar wind is still highly unstable.

Modeling the effects of latitudinal gradients in stellar winds, with application to the solar wind

A steady, axisymmetric, quasi-radial, global model previously developed for stellar winds with embedded magnetic fields has been extended to include latitudinal gradient effects on the azimuthal velocity and magnetic field. The linear results at large radii are presented for large-amplitude latitudinal variations in the radial magnetic field, mass loss rate, and radial velocity of the wind. The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations predict meridional flows that develop naturally from internal magnetic stresses. The flows open flux tubes in the star's equatorial plane, redistributing mass and magnetic flux as a function of stellar latitude. The plasma spins up to conserve angular momentum in fields and plasma. The results are generally applicable to stellar winds (including radiatively driven winds), provided that the internal structure is not dominated by rotation. The asymptotic solutions do not explicitly depend on the form of the energy equation, although the assumed O(1) state which drives these solutions depends on the deposition of energy and momentum throughout the wind.

Applications of the magneto-optical filter to stellar pulsation measurements

A proposed method of employing the Cacciani magneto-optical filter (MOF) for stellar seismology studies is described. The method relies on the fact that the separation of the filter bandpasses in the MOF can be changed by varying the level of input power to the filter cells. With the use of a simple servosystem the bandpass of a MOF can be tuned to compensate for the changes in the radial velocity of a star introduced by the orbital motion of the Earth. Such a tuned filter can then be used to record intensity fluctuations through the MOF bandpass over an extended period of time for each given star. Also, the use of a two cell version of the MOF makes it possible to alternately chop between the bandpass located in the stellar line wing and a second bandpass located in the stellar continuum. Rapid interchange between the two channels makes it possible for atmospheric-introduced noise to be removed from the time series.

Stellar chromospheres, coronae, and winds

It has now been found that one or more of the phenomena of chromospheres, coronae, and winds are present in stars of every class. A review is provided of the observational and theoretical results pertaining to the thermal and dynamical structure of early- and late-type stellar atmospheres. Single stars either on the main sequence or in the postmain sequence stages of evolution are considered. In the context of a study of late-type stars, the specific case of the sun is also examined. The observational evidence for the presence of chromospheres in late-type stellar atmospheres is discussed, taking into account spectral diagnostics and line formation, an observational summary and aspects of location in the H-R diagram, and the Wilson-Bappu effect. Attention is also given to observational evidence for the presence of transition regions and coronae in late-type stellar atmospheres, chromospheric and coronal heating mechanisms, observational evidence for mass loss, and the winds and coronae of early-type stars.

Kinetic efficiencies of stellar wind bubbles

The theoretical fraction of a stellar wind's energy converted into the kinetic energy of an expanding swept-up shell is 20 percent in the classical theory of stellar wind bubbles. Observational estimates of this conversion factor based on the amount of ionized material in wind-swept shells about Wolf-Rayet stars generally yield results of 1 percent. If there is a substantial amount of neutral material in the shell, it will not be counted and the kinetic efficiency will be underestimated. Presented here is a dynamical estimate which accounts for this neutral material in deducing the kinetic efficiencies of stellar wind bubbles. Bubbles classified as wind-blown shells have kinetic efficiencies in line with theoretical expectations for energy-conserving evolution in a homogeneous medium. Ringlike nebulae have significantly lower efficiencies, probably because they have been 'poisoned' by the photoevaporation of clouds engulfed during evolution into a cloudy substrate.

Stellar observations with the Voyager EUV objective grating spectrograph

During the periods of interplanetary cruise the Voyager ultraviolet spectrometers are used to provide unique and otherwise unobtainable observations in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV, 500 to 1200) and the far ultraviolet (FUV, 912 to 1220 A). These observations include the spectra of hot stellar sources as well as emission from the interplanetary medium. Recent results of note include: (1)Extensive spectrophotometric coverage of a superoutburst of the dwarf nova VW Hydri, which showed a clear 1/2 day delay in the outburst at 1000 A relative to that observed in the optical and a curious dip in the FUV light curve near maximum light. The Voyager observations were part of a comprehensive and highly successful campaign involving EXOSAT, IUE and ground based observations of this dwarf nova; (2)A comprehensive study of Be star spectra and variability. These results show the critical importance of FUV observations in the study of the effects of stellar rotation in hot stars; (3)The detection of a strong O VI absorption feature in the spectrum of the PG 1159-like object H1504+65. This detection along with the optical identification of weak O IV lines was a key to the interpretation of this object; which is of extremely high (>150,000K) temperature and appears to be a unique example of a stellar atmosphere devoid of H and He; (4)An analysis of an extremely long duration spectrum of the EUV and FUV sky background, which establishes important new upper limits on both continuum and line emission. This result also provide the first detection of interplanetary Lyman gamma.

Heating of the stellar corona

The present state of development of the theory of coronal heating is summarized. Coronal heating is the general cause of stellar X-ray emission, and it is also the cause of stellar mass loss in most stars. Hence a quantitive theory of coronal heating is an essential part of X-ray astronomy, and the development of a correct theory of coronal heating should be a primary concern of X-ray astronomers. The magnetohydrodynamical effects involved in coronal heating are not without interest in their own right, representing phenomena largely unknown in the terrestrial laboratory. Until these effects can be evaluated and assembled into a comprehensive theory of coronal heating for at least one star, the interpretation of the X-ray emissions of all stars is a phenomenological study at best, based on arbitrary organization and display of X-ray luminosity against bolometric luminosity, rotation rate, etc. The sun provides the one opportunity to pursue the exotic physical effects that combine to heat a stellar corona.
